Thanks for taking the time to review the RP. I feel you're one of the few reviewers that will be impartial about it and not jump on a Canon hate train for those clicks/views. It's not a camera that currently has my attention, since I own a 6DII at this time, and do not feel the need to upgrade, but it's still interesting to hear about what is currently out. Maybe what it offers may or may not sway my decision, i can't say. What I am very much looking forward to is your review of the RF 35mm f/1.8. You spoke highly of the EF 35mm f/2 IS, which is why i purchased it and love it, and would like to see how it measures up in comparison. While it does appear that Canon is going all out with the new RF mount by releasing and announcing all these new, fantastic RF L lenses, I believe the 35mm f/1.8 will be indicative to what they can truly offer the masses. While the current bodies may be underwhelming to some, especially in videographer circles, as a purely stills photographer, I'm quite excited with what they'll do next, as it seems Canon has developed a very strong foundation with this RF line.

Canon really needs to continue to release lenses like the RF35 - including some budget options. People that spend $1200 on an RP are probably not interested in buying a $3000 28-70 F2 to pair with it.

OK, a long one and I apologize in advance about that :) - I think a lot of people don't get this camera and the logic behind it. I, for example, have a Rebel series camera and 2 EF lenses for it. This RP allows me to go full frame for 1300 dollars (or lower during discounts, black friday, christmas season or whatever). I have 3 of those batteries too and I even know very well where all the buttons and controls are and what they do, hence no learning curve and no hassle. So, for a price I can stomach, I can get an EVF, better sensor, no crop factor for my lenses and better focus accuracy, especially since I shoot in single shot, 1 - point AF with the Rebel anyway. Now, do I know that, lets say Sony 7III is a significantly better camera? Yes, I do. But it's $2000 for the body alone, then I have to buy the 2 lenses, maybe an extra battery... I checked the prices, believe me. If I want a general zoom and a telephoto like the ones I have for the RP, there is no way I get that Sony operational under $3400 - $3500. (And the damn thing doesn't have a flip-out screen even, which I use every time I shoot with my old, little camera! Personal preference, but just saying)... Yes, if I start from scratch, with no camera, then the RP and 2 decent lenses would be like $2300 and I would be seriously thinking for the Sony, which is like $1200 more, but way more capable. For $2300 more expensive though - not so much. And I'm happy a "budget option" exist, otherwise I would be looking at the FF mirrorless cameras in KZbin only. And if we are talking from Canon's perspective - since Rebels are maybe the most popular ICL cameras out there, I believe there is much bigger number guys like me, than guys starting to build a FF system from scratch. So Canon made a pretty good assessment with RP. Plus, I believe their plan is to give guys like me this camera and it's flaws, hook us in and try sell us the R or another from the upcoming models later. But regardless of companies scheming, the simple fact is, with the RP I can go mirrorless and FF for the grand total of $1000, If I wait a bit and shop around. No other option gives me that. Even the old models like Sony 7II, which are just $1000, but I still have 0 lenses and they have flaws on their own too.
@DustinAbbottTWI

I think that is a fair take. I actually think (personally) that the RP makes more sense than the EOS R at the moment. I like the layout, and I'm more willing to forgive the flaws at this price point.

I bought the RP because I have a lot of travel coming up and size/weight are a big deal to me. I was surprised to find that this camera performs way beyond what most internet reviewers are giving it credit for. Especially when paired with my lightweight lenses (Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 and 70-210mm f/4, Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM), it is a much better travel camera than my old 5d mark iii and has produced great images in the majority of situations I've used it in so far. I've also done some studio and editorial/fashion work with the camera in the last few weeks and I have been Really Pleased with the results.

As always an excellent review. I bought an RP camera and returned it the next day for something that no reviewer is mentioning and I believe is really bad. When mounting any lens with the canon adapter, the AF motor on the lens works constantly and not only when the shutter is pressed. I truly believe that this will wear the motor on the lens way faster. I don't know if it happens the same with the R lenses, but many of us are buying the R cameras so we can use previous canon lenses which work fantastic with the adapter, except for the fact that the moment the camera is on, the AF works all the time.

@raizadavarun
@raizadavarun 5 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I can't tell you how desperately I was waiting for your review on the RP which as usual is spot on and completely different from most KZbin reviews !! In India, Currently the difference between the R and the RP with the 24 105 lens , is about $400 .. At this price point I surely feel going in for the R is better given the slightly better sensor , the slightly better low light auto focus abilities , the Sensor curtain (given the our dusty conditions in our country) But when I think about my usage being only for stills, I start thinking again!!!! I currently have the 70D with a bunch of EFS lenses and a couple of EF lenses .. if I sell the 70D with the lenses I should get some $600 richer ... What's your take on this dilemma which most of us are facing
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 5 жыл бұрын
At $400 difference, the R is probably worth the extra money. It does give you some key advantages, and yes, the sensor curtain is a big deal in your country.

As a still photographer, I get to disregard the videographers' concerns regarding the RP and R video specs, so a bit discombobulated that Canon seems to be targeting this 80D owner who has carefully cultivated nice glass (If I'm the targeted demographic, though thankful, I'm not sure that it's a winning strategy!). So, I'm wrestling between the RP and R. Ultimately, I think it is the sensor that will have me go with the R (Maybe this weekend with the price drop!), but that extra $1k will not flow easily from my hand. Thanks for the great review!

@@DustinAbbottTWI Thanks for the advice and preview! That is my understanding and is consistent with the apparent 6DII vs. 5dIV sensor origins and Photons to Photons testing. I do a fair amount of photography in a cathedral setting (St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, Seattle) and raising shadow is a delicate dance. My 80D has performed admirably in candlelight, but I'm sure looking forward to the greater DR and low-light focusing (Though I will have to endure ragging from the Sony kids. I console myself with my lenses.).

I don't think I'll exchange my 6D mark II with a RP. It's a good camera, and the most attractive feature to me is the accuracy of the AF, the spread of the AF area (a major issue on the 6D2) and the higher low light sensitivity than the best that DSLRs can give, but on many other aspects I really prefer the 6D2: it has a higher frame rate very useful for action and wildlife (it's my primary camera), it has GPS for when I travel, and I can still get most of the benefits of mirrorless simply shooting in Live View, a thing that I tend to do more often lately mainly to overcome the composition limitations given by the center concentration of AF points in the viewfinder AF. I would totally exchange my 6D2 with an EOS R though, and I'm really thinking about it, but I am also concerne that a 100-400 + the EF-RF adapter may result in a very unbalanced setup

If they put the R sensor in it, they wouldn't have much to differentiate. I think a camera with more boxes checked is definitely coming, but I also think it will cost more.

@@DustinAbbottTWI I agree they can only play 'games' with the customer for so long. The dip in sales are showing that.

Think they have yet to produce a power efficient and powerful enough processor which can read the data fast enough from this sensor, let alone a more robust sensor. Think this camera is targeted more to those family oriented crowd who have Canon lenses, and just want to use AF points all across the frame and use for single point AF :s Hope they make a more competitive camera - just so to demonstrate they have the tech to get everything into one package.

I think GRobot's take is a good one. This is a solid camera aimed at those that want a full frame camera but don't have a major budget...and Canon still has the broadest support of lenses out there.

@@DustinAbbottTWI Currently I'm keeping my Canon glas in the hope that they will release a FFML camera that will actually also shoot video at (or very close to) FF read-out soon. The R has some very nice features like that safety shutter for the sensor, and as someone who owns quite a bit of EF lenses the adapter with the drop-in filters sounds like a great thing to have. But nowadays I use my camera 50/50 for photography and video, and I frequently switch between both, so that crop factor is killing both the R and RP for me. Unfortunatley (for Canon) I have by now become used to (and a big fan of) the image quality on the Sony a7III, so Canon will have to create a camera that ticks all the relevant boxes for me to return to a Canon body. They could of course start using Sony sensors and processors like some other camera producers, but I don't think they will do that.

What is up with all these reviewers pronouncing EOS as E ahss? When I hear it I can't get the visual of a mule vocalizing. Is it a Canon regional thing? Canon USA pronounces it E Oh S. I'm a Canon shooter and just was wondering.

Both are acceptable pronunciations. I've been doing Canon reviews for many years and worked with Canon on many projects...and I've never heard any complaint from a company insider over my pronunciation.

Canon had a weird rollout for their mirrorless line. The EOS R was in this awkward spot of costing more than its competitors while doing less, and made for unfavorable comparisons (unless you really love flip forward screens). Seems like they would have been better off rolling out with the RP from the start so that limited features would be more forgivable. Sure it does less, but it costs less! Now, instead of the focus being on how much cheaper the RP is to the A7iii or Z6 all the comparisons are between the features of the R and RP. Would have been interesting to see what the reception would have been if the RP was the initial rollout with a beefier pro body being released some time in the fall for the lead-up to the Olympics.

I agree, but still I don't think that either Nikon or Canon are going to release a pro body capable for the Olympics. I mean, we're talking 1DX2/D5 territory here, and the only mirrorless as capable as these two is the A9, with all the downsides we saw of the electronic shutter. Also, there's not enough native glass for the Z/R mount, and I bet no one would ever want to work with a fiddly adapter between a 600mm and the body
@CKramburglar
@CKramburglar 5 жыл бұрын
Ya the Olympics was a bad example, more just the idea of releasing a budget option to start with a clear roadmap of releasing a higher end body in the fall, rather than a mid-rangish body then budget then....who knows

@@CKramburglar I think they'll release a 5D series EOS R within the next year, they need to because they're the only big company without a pro mirrorless option, but they worked on pro lenses in the meantime, so if they release a good pro camera, they could totally drive the market

How exactly is the RP more expensive than full frame competition?
@CKramburglar
@CKramburglar 5 жыл бұрын
Dustin Abbott it’s not, the R was. That’s why I think they should have released the RP first, so that having less features wouldn’t matter as much
