Man I remember reading your reviews in high school, when I got my original rebel camera. Now I just celebrated my birthday and turned 30... time goes by so fast, super grateful you’re still here talking about your passions and loving it! This was one of my favourite cameras to feel out in Best Buy, maybe illl get one one day, still playing with my eos m and magic lantern raw video but on the other hand it’s a great little camera with that 22mm f2

I bought the RP with the 35 RF and I LOVE it. Super versatile, compact, lightweight, reliable AF and great image quality. I think the RP is super underrated and has a excellent value. Even if I have 2x R5 with great RF lenses for weddings/events, I easily prefer the RP for personal use (vacation, family, hobby)!

Thanks for the review and bringing back the joy of photography in me. Never thought a 36k subs channel and your website would enlighten me better than any other place on the internet. I myself fell into the bottom level of photographer (according to your blog), wasting money for cameras every years buying every new Sony cameras to do lab test images then put in on shelf top. I was so brainwashed by the web into thinking canon is inferior in term of video spec (which I never shoot video) and noise at ISO I never used. I tried Fuji cameras but their film simulation wasn't my taste and I could just replicate it with just a click in Lightroom. I took a break from photography for a year due to mental health and realized photography is much more than reading specsheets and watching youtube videos, in fact most of the images Im proud of was taken with my phone during these hard time. Last week I found your EOS RP review page and tried out this amazing camera. Everything feel right the first time I hold this camera in my hand, the color is miles ahead compared to other things I've used. Thanks again for the godly information on your website. Stay safe and keep up the good work!

Thank you for this review. I went to both Sony and Canon stores yesterday. Played around with both cameras. The canon RP is a lot lighter than the A7III. Feels a lot more comfortable to hold, the menus are more intuitive. And I have to say that the EVF and the LCD are super clear. I just got sold my Panasonic G7, so compared to that camera, the canon is on a whole different level.

The RP is fun to shoot with! I also love changing focus on the touch screen when looking through the EVF (The Nikon D5600, D5500, Z50 have this too). I also appreciate the touch to focus, which initiates tracking and the tracking does a great job too. In other words, it works and it is intuitive. Also, don't listen to the negativity around the RF 24-240 lens. It is sharp, AF is fast and silent and with lens profiles the CA/V/Other issues are non-existent. I mean how many other full frame 10x zoom lens exist that are this good? It might be the best FF 10x zoom ever made.

Hello Ken, what a timely video. I just pulled the trigger on an RP and EF-RF adapter today. I remember when I decided it was time to try digital and leave the film realm in 2006 I found your review on the D40 Nikon. Bought that and still have it. Now many Nikon and Canon DSLR bodies later time to try mirrorless. I still have a 300mm F4 IS L and 28-105 USM II. Both a little long in the tooth but good glass anyway in my opinion. I will probably add some RF glass in the future. Look forward to more no nonsense video's from you.

Sir , you are a legend. One of the reasons I picked up the camera and stepped into serious photography is you. I was thinking to move to mirrorless and I am a canon user. I don’t know why but canon had more appeal to it. But then I was planning to move to Sony system which works well in conjunction with canon lenses, after watching this video I think I am gonna stay in the canon family. Wish you good health and keep inspiring us.

This camera is so underrated it’s kind of ridiculous. I was looking for a second body to pair with my Mark IV for events, weddings and portrait shoots. And there were 5D Mark III’s in the $6-700 range with over 100,000 on the shutter on eBay. Then I saw an RP for $750 with 2 extra batteries and less than 6000 shutter, and was like “Is this camera that bad that it’s in the same price point as a 10 year old DSLR with a hundred thousand clicks under its belt?” So I picked it up along with the RF 85 F2 as I’ve been looking for an 85 and figured I’d start my RF glass collection. I’m impressed. I mean, the ease of customization and weight are just incredible. And all my images have looked sharp as well. I’d definitely prefer two card slots and no exposed sensor, and I’m sure the dynamic range isn’t quite as good as my Mark IV, but for a second camera that’s super light for events that is full frame and cost me $750 practically new? I can live with that.

I just bought a Canon EOS RP with RF16mm f2.8 Thanks to your reviews. I’m thinking of getting a telephoto lens for hiking and some landscape. Recently I have a friend offers me his used 70-200 f4 L IS for roughly USD490 while a new RF 100-400 F5.6-8 is available at USD590 at my place. I wonder which 1 is more worthy and suitable for hiking and landscape if I use my 1.4 or 2.0 teleconverter from my old system on 70-200 f4 I’m currently also using 24-70 f2.8 for daily uses and 70-200 f2.8 for my kids and family. The praise for the RP is justified - I owned it for over a year but switched to the R6 recently. 2 Reasons: Recovering shadows from the RP Raw images didn't work great. The dynamic range is somewhat limited, even at ISO100. The second is the speed (or lack of it) of the autofocus. We own a dog since July and the RP didn't stand a chance to get sharp images of it running around. But that's about it with the disadvantages. I also really liked focussing with the touchscreen while looking through the EVF. The RP is a little gem if you're not looking for an action- or nightshoot-camera.

Both 24-105 f/4L and STM are great and take the same pictures 95% of the time. The f/4L costs a lot more and is much heavier, but offers much more light-gathering at 105mm, while the STM is nearly weightless and has extraordinary stabilization. Either is so much better than anything from Nikon or Sony; you can't go wrong. Let your wallet or how much you want to carry be the judge - or whichever comes at a greater discount as a kit today. I got an rp in July, and love it. I pair it with the rf 24-105 f4 I got to replace the Ef 24-105 f4 I had with my T7i. I also use my Ef 50 1.8. It’s an awesome little camera at a great price point. I have taken some of my favorite photos ever with the rp. Most reviews will rip on it because they’re coming from a pro perspective, when it should be understood that it is truly an entry level full frame mirrorless camera, not an r5. It should be treated with more understanding, respect, and enthusiasm the way you did.

As an enthusiast thinking about going full frame (from Nikon D7200 and Lumix G85 & GX85), I like what I see here. I can shoot stills with this camera and keep the Lumix cameras for video. I really like mirrorless cameras (the two Lumix cameras have spoiled me) and I have to remind myself to check the meter every time I pick up my Nikon. The backward lens capability is a great selling point too. You're the first reviewer to give it some love, but you use it how I would use it. I'm not frustrated by not being able to shoot in a pitch dark room. I'll turn the light on.

Hi Vanessa! Why do you feel the need to change cameras? I'd need to know that to make an intelligent suggestion. Barring that, It all depends on how fast your subjects move. Except for the EOS R5, EOS R6 and the Sony A9/II, mirrorless cameras still can't track focus well enough for sports or fast action. It seems like your subjects don't move that fast, or actually will pose for you, so the RP ought to be awesome. Real difference is being able to see how the pictures will look BEFORE you take them, and the ability to set menus and see playback and magnify everything in-finder, and see it all clearly even in direct sunlight. Good news is if you get your RP from any of my links in the description or in my more detailed review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm that you can try it, and just send it back within 30 days for a 100% cash refund if you hate it. Great review, Ken! One question. You mention in the "what's bad' part of your review that the RP does not have a closed shutter. Other than that it looks like a good transition camera from dslr to mirrorless for those of us who have used Canon dslrs for years and loved them. I have read that the open sensor is a concern, in terms of dust collecting on it, especially when changing lenses and the sensor is completely exposed to that big hole in the front. Is sensor dust going to be a problem with this camera? Would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks!

@@avronaut My question was about dust, not durability.
@avronaut
@avronaut 2 жыл бұрын
@@sl2608 My answer was about dust. Dust can damage a shutter to the point that it no longer works. It then blocks the sensor. It can also be damaged very easily when you change lenses because it sits at the very front of the housing. Also, even with such a shutter and even if you rarely change lenses, dust gets on the sensor. This is because many lenses, when focusing and zooming, move air into the sensor space like an air pump for bicycles.

Hey Ken. Thanks a lot for all the hard work. My spouse and I have been using Canon forever. We currently use an SL1 and a 6D. (oh, we also have a Sony RX100M3... cause it's soooo useful for us in high altitude or tough conditions). We use mostly EF lenses. 40mm pancake, 50mm, 24-70 f/4, 70-300 II, 16-35 f/4, Samyang 14mm f/2.8... and some EF-S I'm considering the RP as a replacement of the 100D (lightweight) My questions: Should we consider any RF lens or what we have is ok? Is that actually going to replace the 6D?

Mirrorless is different. You’ll probably love it. Difference is you can see EVERYTHING in the finder, even in direct sunlight. No longer will you have to squint at the tiny screen on the back for anything.

Yes, all EF and Efs lenses work swell on the adapter.

Thank you! I have been giving the RP a long look, to replace my old T5i, but have been concerned by the number of negative or less than enthusiastic reviews out there.

Those negative reviews are from people who don’t shoot for a living and are just repeating published specs. The RP is on sale now; get it from any of the links at my written review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/rp.htm and you have at least 30 days to return for full cash refund if you don’t love it. Thanks!

@@KenRockwellTV I haven't had a chance to go through all of your, very extensive, written review and have a quick question. One of the criticisms, of the RP, is its dynamic range for landscapes. Do you have an opinion?
