I think the previous owner has been inside that camera before you. Many of the external screws on my Legria HFR806 have rubber caps and yours are missing. Also, on your video, the top of the camera just comes off, but in reality there's a silver screw inside the unit which holds it in place - that screw is missing from your video, and it's a nightmare to remove. A few internal screws are also missing, because the components shouldn't pull apart so easily. Great video all the same.

Thanks Rusty! Yes, I think you're right. I didn't even realise at the time, but the sticky rubber caps is a dead giveaway! Well spotted 👍

Yep...its the aperture. If u don't have it in there it will be fully open all the time and that might cause problems for the exposure. Also u might get a bit shallow depth of field, as it alters that depending on how the lights angle is reflected to the sensor. The one thing u called the lens I think, is the sensor, thats very delicate and sensitive to dust and such.

Thank you. I actually did dream about it last night, so this information is brilliant news to me! I'll do some research and see if I can work out why the aperture failed. Steve.

Wow, I would have never expected you to get anywhere with this. It's so tiny and intricate, but you figured out on your own! I have a couple of Canon PowerShot photo cameras, some of them work, some of them shows a weird smudged colorful image, some of them is pitch black. Maybe the black ones have similar issues. I might look into one of them. It was a great idea to put it back without the shutters, I would have tried to turn it on and quickly remove the battery before it has its own shutdown mechanism close if (the idea is that if those shutters work, they would remain open when I cut off the power, but your idea was waaay better)

Hi, the noise you hear is simply the optical stabilizer. I have a black screen, it's probably the flat cable. I have the Canon HF R 46

I have the R606. Prior to COVID it stopped powering on from the battery (any battery). Worked fine from the mains. After taking it apart I could find nothing wrong. I picked it back up a few months ago and after charging it up it worked again. Been fine since. Bizarre.

Hello. First time watching one of your videos. As you might be able to guess from my username, I like to think I know a little bit about cameras. Other commenters seem to have said a lot of this already but I thought I’d pad it out a bit for yourself any anybody else that might come across this video in future. The plastic pieces you removed are the iris blades which control the aperture size. It’s one of the two ways the camera controls how much light reaches the sensor - the other two being the shutter (which will be electronic in this camera.) There is also an ISO or gain setting which determines the sensitivity of the sensor but that’s not important for the time being. Indoors the aperture will probably need to be fully open anyway to let in the maximum amount of light. Outdoors, in the sunshine, because the camera now can’t make the aperture smaller, the sensor will receive so much light the picture will either be over-exposed or the camera will automatically increase the shutter speed to compensate. That might work just fine if the shutter speed can go high enough. In professional videography, shutter speeds are quite important and will be balanced with the aperture size to get a correct exposure. For casual use, I don’t suppose it matters much. The other effect the aperture has, as another commenter mentioned, is the depth of field. With the aperture wide open (or missing!) you’ll get a reasonably shallow depth of field. That means if you focus on something about a metre away then the something further away will go out of focus. If you wanted more things in focus, you would usually decrease the aperture size and also decrease the shutter speed to let more light in to compensate. I don’t know if this camera gives you that level of manual control or not (if you wanted it!) It’s probably the difference between landscape and portrait modes, if this camera has settings like that. With the iris blades missing, you’re stuck with the shallowest depth of field the camera offers. Again, in most situations, for a casual user, I doubt they’d notice. I hope that answers a few questions you might have had. I would like to see you revisit this and fix the aperture. I suspect it was either physically stuck or the mechanical parts of the camera controlled by the software weren’t getting the message to open and close it. It could be anything from a dodgy ribbon cable, a damaged chip or a faulty actuator (near the iris blades.) Thanks for the video. If I could make one request - please tone down the music a lot! ;)
@StezStixFix4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this. It all makes perfect sense to me now. I will certainly take another look at it, i suspect it is the actuator, as the ribbon cable looked good and the mechanism moved freely by hand, but I'll not rule that out without taking a closer look. And appreciate the feedback on the music, I did notice the levels seemed high after I posted the video, but the damage was already done! Consider the gain lowered much more for the next video. Thanks again, Steve.

Our Mate Vince put me on to your channel, so yeah.. I subbed and I liked.. Now.. If memory serves me correctly, Image sensors CMos and Ccd both are prone to degrade with exposure to the electromagnetic spectrum over time, So I suspect the aperture you removed was to help extend the sensors usable life span "by isolating the Sensor" even further than what the obvious aperture was doing " google " Do CCD and Cmos sensors degrade.. I double checked 😉 BTW That rattling could have something to do with "optical" Image stabilising..
@StezStixFix4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! That makes sense, I'm just glad I didn't rattle it too hard! 😄 I'll do some research on CMOS/CCD. Much appreciated! Steve.

Hi StezStiz, all the way from Newfoundland Canada, I have a Panasonic camcorder here with the very same issue! But I'm not sure if I have what it takes to get into the camera that deep! Is this camera still working and have you since figured how why they were not opening, My guess was right of what the issue was , because as i was trying to figure out my camcorder (and you could have done the same) but i looked into the front lens and can see clearly there was something in there that wasn't opening. Thanks for confirming the problem for me!
@StezStixFix3 жыл бұрын
Hey HOTR! It definitely takes some dismantling and putting back together, these things are very well packed out inside with tiny screws holding everything together! This one is still working, and I do use it from time to time for some filming. I think I managed to sort the issue simply by taking it apart and putting it back together, I must have freed up whatever it was that was getting stuck. This one was a while ago, and I can't remember all the correct terminology but it was the aperture blades I think. Good luck! Steve

Follow up to my comment that I put on the wrong video (will never figure that one out because I was watching this as I commented): It looks like a somewhat simplified version of a mechanical iris that can also affect depth of field as well as the amount of light that enters the camera depending on how open or closed (aperture size) it is. It may benefit you to pursue it further.

The way you've left it (open) will be fine for darkish places but if you took it out on a bright day it will get flooded with light and will white out I think, great for filming stars though if left to focus

God I'm crap, it's spelt aperture, and it's to do with f-stops (light and focal ranges), which on Digi cams is automated but historically you would use light meters and measuring tape I think, I studied this at uni and clearly was more focused on pints and pot.
