does it pay to get adapters for each lens and keep them on permanently if one is switching to a RF mount camera

Im very very surprised. I was wondering if its worth that extra money for RF version. But thanks to you im 100% sure that EF is right choice for me. Thanks!

They're both great pieces of glass, but the tipping point for me is just how great the EF to RF adapters are. The ND Filter adapter has spoiled me whenever I have to shoot on another system. Thanks for the comment and I hope you have a great day!

One thing that I hope Canon hopefully will consider improving in future RF lens designs is better control of their focus breathing so as to make their lenses more suitable as hybrid glass rather than mainly purely stills lenses. This is my main reason for sticking with EF glass for the time being, plus my most used EF 300 2.8L and 1352.0 L lenses are not presently made in RF!🙏🏾

Good straight forward review, thank you. I would add to your review the comparison of length and weight of RF Vs. EF + adapter. Based on these alone I have decided to keep my existing EF lenses: 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, 100mm macro; but sold my EF 16-35mm f/4 for RF 14-35mm f/4.

I'm recently new to the mirrorless bodies, and this video clarified that my EF lenses will work for me for the foreseeable future. Thank you for putting it together. Although the video is 2 yrs old, seems to address my issue perfectly. I've tested several of my EF lenses (prime and zoom) and am very pleased with the results, but still, there was some uncertainty as to which lens strategy to pursue. For me, my old 5DIV will now be a backup and my R6ii the prime camera. It's good to have a set of lenses that work both ways, without having to go through the upgrade cost. I can focus on those lenses which are new and of interest (i.e. RF). May have to look into an RF to EF mount at some future date. There are probably more options available at this time than a few years back. Cheers! 😎

Great video. EF glass is the most versatile if you use various cameras as mentioned. Can even adapt glass like the Sigma EF to Sony/e-mount and get great AF performance. Seems like a no brainer if you're a hybrid shooter

I was in the same boat. It was an added bonus that the Canon RF adapters not only let me use my EF glass, but actually added features, like the extra focus ring or the ND drop ins. Thanks for the comment

Great video as always! I'm wondering if you still stand by your advice to stick with EF now a year later after you made this video? I would really appreciate your opinion: I was in the process of selling all my EF L lenses to switch to RF but I just pre-ordered the R5C and since it does not have internal ND's like my C70, I'm wondering if I should stick with my EF lenses and get the ND adapter? Then I could also get the 0.71x adapter for the C70. The one thing that has me questioning this decision is I still do a lot of photography work and I feel the RFs are better when it comes to photography. Let me know your thoughts, Thanks!

Whew! This is a tough, tough question especially with how many great RF lenses there are now. The RFs have amazing quality and build, but I have been using EFs on my R5 for over a year now, and I have had no regrets, whatsoever. Its still a really close call, but If you already have a good line of EF lenses I would probably stick with those for a few reasons. 1. The RFs are more expensive than the value you can get from selling your comparable EFs and therefore this would be a huge investment. 2. The EF to RF adapters are so great that I have never really felt any loss from my EF lenses., in fact they actually add a lot of benefits you can't get from RF glass (like NDs). Adapters are a lot cheaper than a whole line of news lenses and will allow you to access the full benefits of your camera immediately. 3. I do a lot of photography as well, and I have used the EF to RF adapter without any AF issues. In fact, I really love having the ND when I'm using off camera flashes, which I could not use with RF lenses. The RFs are absolutely stunning for photography, but I still use my EFs on campaigns for international clients, and have seen the work on billboards and giant displays and the EF glass still looks great. 4. Because you already have a line of EF glass, I would personally recommend slowly buying some RF glass (maybe one a year) and looking to add to your arsenal over a period of time.

Seems like for someone who is just getting in to photography RF is actually the way to go then, no? For those that don't already have tens of thousands dropped into other bodies and lenses and just wants to start off with the best and be future-proofed... Am I wrong?
@DeafDirector3 жыл бұрын
If you are starting from nothing, then RF will definitely future proof your lenses, and the quality is amazing. However, if you have limited funds, and want to buy a larger number of lenses, you can get EF lenses cheaper, and the Canon EF to RF adapters are so good, that it could be a viable option as well. So I guess it really comes down to how much money you have and how fast you want to build your lens connection. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

@@DeafDirector thanks for the reply! I have an EOS-M 50 Mark II and am eyeing that EOS-RP kit discount right now and wondering if I should go for it. The cropped sensor doesn't do what I need with the majority of my shots being action shots indoors in low light.
@carterpants2 жыл бұрын
@@MattPool The Sigma 16mm is a light hog, the 32mm 1.4 Canon is nuts and quite possibly one of the most impressive pieces of glass ever created. Try them if you haven't already. The EF-M set is mostly dead, but if you invest in the set you will be fine for years to come.
@drdimento Жыл бұрын
This philosophy of EF priority is the same one that was used by the early HD video cameras from Canon using P2 dial storage cards that were quite expensive and waved as the future of filmmaking. I had two of them and quickly saw that the philosophy was a hogwash. I quickly unloaded mine, went to HDV and in less than two-three years the entire market was turning to Compact Flash (CF) and SD cards, with SD winning out. I have switched to RF for the features and quality of the glass over my EF line EXCEPT for the moment on my Primes, where I simply have not taken the time to study the comparison, opting to use the 85mm f1.8 for the moment although it will be respected just like I did my nifty 50 EF with the newer RF 50 1.8 and having absolutely no issues in usage and image quality. RF is THE way to go and inside of 1 year, the market will have all cameras using RF lenses just as you pointed out, now there is a R Red mount, although just one for now, but more as more and more people pick the camera you have in your hand R5 and R5c

Quick question: Are you using TWO adaptors on your R camera? The ND and the EF to RF?
@makennaheld2 жыл бұрын
Or is that a 'two in one' filter/adaptor?
@DeafDirector2 жыл бұрын
@@makennaheld I actually end up switching between the two. When I am in a controlled environment that doesn't require ND I use the EF to RF adapter, and when I need NDs I use the ND adapter. The ND adapter also doubles as a EF to RF adapter, so you can use that by itself to put your EF glass on the RF body.

Hey George, I've never personally used an L mount lens on the R5, so I am not sure. I really like using Canon EF on RF mounts, because Canon makes such good EF to RF adapters, and you get the option to get a Drop In ND adapter, which is really useful for video. Have a great day!

No need to change a thing especially if you're a stills shooter. Wait for prices to come down , bugs to get worked out, overheating, softness, firmware, etc. Most couldn't tell the difference from a photo taken using EF or RF glass, or a 5d mark IV and R5 anyway. Now save your mony and get out there and shoot some great pictures. Move it! Move it! Move it!
@iancurrie88442 жыл бұрын
I agree completely. EF are FAR better bang for the buck, can be adapted to other systems as well as RF AND you can use the fantastic RF adapter which has a Neutral Density and CPL filter between the lens and camera. One filter for ALL your lenses - even fish eye. Win/win/win. RF is anti-competitive with its mount so I won't be buying any RF lenses, EVER.
