Agree 100%. Really hope they put some features of the M50 in the M5ii like the silent shutter mode. As a side note, I would have loved to see these dials on the EOS R. I'm a Canon fan but how they managed to launch the R with lesser dials than the M5 is actually shocking to me. Would love to hear an engineer/designer's take on this.

Interesting. (It's 5 years later. Winter 2022). I have an M50 MkII. I like its small size and image quality, but this older camera seems more capable. Several of the control dials disappeared in the newer camera. I checked and it seems I can buy an M5 for $200 to $300US. Might be fun to try that. (The lens selection for the new Canon APSC RP models is disqualifying. All either too slow or crazy expensive.)

When I bought the first EOS M, there were only two EF-M lenses available. I bought an EF-S adapter and used lenses from the T4i. The EOS M was a joke: small and slippery as a bar of soap, it lacked features and with the adapter and an EF-S lens the whole package was not much smaller than a real DSLR. The M5 seems like a progress: better grip, flip-out screen, and it seems that there are more lenses to choose from. But I doubt many would want to switch to a new lens format just because the body is slightly slimmer. I liked the review, though.

Awesome, Short and to the point. I find some people are not taking the time to become familiar with this camera, and are too quick to sell it at a very affordable price. It is light and very versatile. I have the 22mm lens for this camera and it is sharp! I can't wait for the next generation. Maybe a full frame?

Heard your name before by other esteemed YTubers but I'm surprised the Marty Scorsese in the thumbnails kept me away. Best review of the M5 in my opinion! Short, yet speaking about all the subtle features and dials(no one spoke as much about them as you which I found surprising in Dec 2018). I've mentioned this below and will re-iterate that Silent shutter mode, DIgic 8 and the Auto send to device WiFi features from the M50/EOS R would be excellent to have in the M5ii. And also, I don't want to bash on the EOS R. (Actually enjoyed using it on a BTS shoot for both stills and video but Full Frame is not my budget and weight really and it's too expensive to move to Fuji) and while I did get to accustomed to the controls really fast and it's not a deal breaker, why the R did not get the controls and dials from the M5 is beyond me.

Great video Maarten. But there is no 5 axes stabilisation in the camera. This is only a software mode for video which leads to a crop.

This is the most comprehensive review for M5 on youtube, thanks for your efforts. I am considering to buy my first and the only one camera due to limited budget, choosing from 80D, M5 and A6300. 80D seems to be my dream camera with its large selection of budget lenses, but the later two offers compact body and light weight for portability. I'm afraid to be regret if I bought a mirrorless camera instead of DSLR. Is it a trend to buy mirrorless? Thanks a lot.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. If it's a trend, it's a long lasting one. I'd call it a transition (and like the transition from LP to CD, not all needs are met and some will want to stay behind - for what are perfectly valid reasons). If you're afraid you'll regret the decision, by all means, take the 80D, a great camera which should last a long time. I'd rather see you buy one good lens than a bunch of budget lenses, but. However, if you are worried about weight, or think you might leave a larger body (like the 80D) behind - then take the mirrorless. Personally, (and I love my A6000) if I was shooting stills (and not so much video), I'd take the 80D. Hope this helps.

Maarten, amazing review as usual. Would love your input on my situation. I'm looking for a mirrorless camera mainly for vlogging but would also appreciate a camera that can take a decent landscape shot and some street shooting. Also, reliability/durability is also very important. I've narrowed it down to the Canon m5/m6 or the Sony a6300/a6500. Which of those would you recommend or would or suggest something else. Thanks and keep up the great work!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. I'd take the M5, simply because it has a flip screen that makes it possible to vlog. For as desirable as all the other features make the A6300 or A6500, the lack of a screen that faces front makes it unsuitable for vlogging.

Your videos are amazing! Thank you very much. I am a Sony a6500 owner looking to get into the Canon M series. Even though the Sony a6500 is vastly superior in certain ways, it's the little things that end up affecting me much more... ergonomically, the Sony a6500 is awful and is not fun to use. The dials on the Canon M5 look like a dream in comparison. That, and the relatively poor JPEG colors on the Sony are making me consider Canon's mirrorless offering.

Great review. I find this to be a very interesting camera. Before I forget that bloody Lighting Optimizer is the first thing that has to be cranked down to low. The pictures and video look terrible with it left in its standard setting. As you covered there are many things to love about this camera. Very few in this class come with a mic input. The video and autofocus is very good, great touchscreen, etc. But the kit lens that came with the M3 was much better. I couldn't help feeling Canon does not have a lot of confidence in this line. It's been around for 5 years and it has only a few native lenses. Then there is the price, same range, to higher, as the Lumix G85. No contest there.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
I truly appreciate your kind words, thanks for taking the time from vlogging to comment. While in most cases the lighting optimizer is not needed, when it is, I find it most helpful - but, yes, by default Off. Canon is really letting the M series struggle under a lack of lenses, particularly good lenses. The kit here is particularly lacking. However, using adapted Canon lenses (although it doesn't help the weight issue) is very transparent.

Thank you for your kind words, and your loyalty. Well, yes, depending on the size of the lens, it does get a little unwieldy, particularly as the body doesn't have quite the same grip as a larger camera. That said, I did spend some time walking around with the 24-105 on the M5 and it wasn't an issue for me. I've usually shot with native lenses, so not really sure if this is better or worse.

i think that many people will find the flip down screen strange, but it is great for when you want to mount a mic on the top for vlogging. This however makes it a bit hard to use a tripod, but I have an adapter plate I mount on the bottom which offset the mount screw to the side and that makes it usable if a tripod is needed.

Been a Canon shooter since '77', and while I have a huge arsenal of Canon glass (mostly 'L'), I am looking at down scaling to mirrorless by year's end. Frankly, Canon's 'M' offerings were intriguing at first, however after trying the M and M3, I have been less than tempted to give my hard earned dollars to Canon, despite the fact that I could use my EF glass on the 'M' body (via an adapter). Honestly, I am really lusting after Fuji's XPro 2 and XT 2, as well as Olympus offerings. Now if Canon were to come out with a true "pro" level mirrorless rig that would give Fuji and Olympus a run for "my" money, I might be interested in staying in Canon's universe, but they really to up their game. Oh and Canon and other camera makers, follow Fuji and Olympus's lead and for the love of God, put in a viewfinder on your range finders, I loathe shooting from the LCD on the back, so unnatural.... no wonder why these guys are killin it in the Mirrorless market.

Looking to get a mirrorless, but have canon lenses so they could be used with an adapter on these. -The extra dials of the M5 seem quite useful, while the M50 seems a little dumbed down in comparison, perhaps meant more for automatic mode usage, and i heard the M5 has got longer battery life. Wondered how they compre in battery life, autofocus performance, and build quality. Thanks a lot, cheers!
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 6 жыл бұрын
Generally, Canon cameras with fewer digits are the higher end models. I'd take the M5, mostly for the reasons you've provided. I would judge all three of those factors to be more or less the same, but you might find a more detailed analysis of those issues at dpreview.
@thegrayyernaut
@thegrayyernaut 5 жыл бұрын
The M50 is described by Canon (on their official Specification pages) to have shorter battery life than the M5 since it uses a cheaper battery type (LP-E12 instead of LP-E17).

I would suggest that there are some Fujifilm models (like the X-T2) that offer a complement of physical controls for aperture, shutter and ISO (they can also be automated when required). I feel that this design provides a better system for learning photography, as the controls and settings are always visible and easily adjustable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYCWmpR3dr59jck There's a less expensive model - the X-T20 - which has fewer physical controls but otherwise embodies the same spirit kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJTdh4J3eJJ2nqc Hope this helps.

I'm sure this camera works and well -- the built seems solid, as usual in Canon. The interface also works great. But still, I can't see myself buying these over a Fuji or even a Sony. The Canon M5, for me, still lacks some sort of a "big thing". I'm saving for a X-T20. I know Canon cameras work most of the time but for me, specially a mirrorless, has to be fun -- for example, the Fuji film simulations. What do you think, Maarten? Great video, as always.

Thanks for your kind words, they're always appreciated. I know! Everything is fine, but it's missing something that excites me, or makes me think this really is a cool device. If you're buying a mirrorless camera, and you're a Canon fan - or just want to share the lenses with your DSLR bodies, this is the right choice and it is a good choice. I think you're right though, the rest of us were looking for a little more excitement.

Even if I "grew" my photography skills on Canon, I've never owned one and feel confident on trying Fuji. I'd like the X-T2 but, body only, it is out of my price range. @MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
Did I say that? For any given sensor size, the larger the pixel count, the lower the ISO - although this is a highly elastic issue, as the technology from manufacturer to manufacturer and generation to generation can be vastly different. As a concrete example - consider Sony's A7 series - the higher sensivity model A7S has a significantly lower pixel count than the A7R. Hope this helps.

I've had the 80D for awhile and needed a backup body for an up coming trip. I also wanted a capable camera in its own right for when the 80D would be a bit too large. So far my recent M5 fits the bill. With the same sensor, the resulting images should be quite similar. Being able to use all of the Canon glass is also a definite plus. I'm still in the process of customizing all of the menu options. The manual describes what those options are but is rather thin as to why you would choose one or the other. A detailed review of the menu choices and how they affect real life pictures would be great.

@@MaartenHeilbron The best review ! Period. But, I have a question. I have always shot Manual mode with my other Canon DSLRs and I while looking at the subject in my viewfinder to compose the shot, I found "very easy" dialing and touching the aperture buttons. But I have watched some M50 videos and it is always mentioned that when shooting in Manual mode it is very hard to manipulate the aperture button. It is that true ? I'm asking, because I just bought the M50, but before unboxing the camera I want to be really sure that this is not going to be an issue for me. Please help me on that ! If I return the camera to BestBuy after opened I will be charge a fee. Thank you

Thanks for clearing that up :-) It's certainly not as easy as standard DSLR models. If you are a fully manual shooter, then look for a camera that has the two dials in the positions you're used to - otherwise you'll end up frustrated. Left hand power is a thing with higher end canon cameras. Most of them have it.
@MaartenHeilbron
@MaartenHeilbron 7 жыл бұрын
That doesn't make it any less awkward. If you want to be able to react quickly, particularly with a mirrorless camera that needs to be turned off to reduce power consumption - IMHO the ability to hold the camera with one hand in a position that can also turn the camera on and then snap is essential. I can appreciate that the longer battery life of a DSLR makes powering on and off slightly less necessary.

Maarten Heilbron I usually have my camera on 'auto power off‘. It turns my camera off after 30 seconds of inactivity. All I have to do to power it back up is half press the shutter button. Not sure if that’s integrated into the M system though.
