The most important thing with 4K is the f stop of the lens. Stop it down and the focus is terrible in 4K. I have to pull focus on my m50. Love your channel Chad!

Thanks for commenting Tammy! I did some testing of this last night in both 4K as well as taking photos with a pretty wide open f stop. One thing that made it 10x easier was using focus peaking and an external monitor. (I just used my viewfinder for the photo part). On the lcd screen it was near impossible to see the marks. I did have some images come out soft in the wrong areas and also sharp in the wrong areas. I think with some more practice I’ll get the hang of it, but when possible, the auto focus on the canon is just so dang reliable!

Chadeveryday I wish they would upgrade the firmware. I just really couldn’t live without the focus Peking that’s the one thing that really allows me to make sure that I’m completely in focus but when I’m stopped all the way down it seems like it’s such a fine line area of focus and if you move you’re blurry. LOL

Hello Chad, I use only 4 K on Canon M50. But for a wider picture, i bought the Canon 11-22mm, and for low light with electronic image stabilization on, i use an Angenieux 15mm 1.3 (Super 16mm optical). With stabilisation cropping picture a little more, no distortion on the angles. And i use most of the time manual focusing with manual focus mark (red color). A great tip is to use photo button for video on/of (remapping) and to get the good focus - with the servo off - by pressing half (servo on for a short time to focus). Thanks a lot & best regards. Sylvain

Thank you for that advice! I've been looking at getting the 11-22 in the next couple of weeks. I use the 22mm prime in my talking head space and up until now was shooting at 1080 so the view I'm getting is around 35mm but with the 11mm even at the 4k crop, I'll get a view of 28~. I think it will make a challenge out of some things for sure, but I feel like with practice and getting used to it it will be no problem. Especially when the external monitor arrives this week to help with focus.

Video looks great. Nice and sharp and in focus. I have a 4k tv and can tell a difference when a video is in 4k or not. It's almost painful sometimes to watch videos that are not 4K lol

I agree with you completely! I watch everything on a 4K display and it makes all the difference!

Great video, thank you. I loved that you actually showed the footage of what it looks like vs just talking about it. Definitely got a 'like' from me. 😊

Using proxies will dramatically improve processing speeds. When you start speed ramping and using heavy effects you gonna realize the m50 bit rate which is small will bring any sub $2,000 Mac pro or iMac to it's knees. I typicay use 1080 60 on my m50 but I'm new to videography and currently more focused on the other aspects of it. But I plan to use my 4k more and using after effects detail preservation scale tool instead of simply exporting a larger aspect ratio. Everything from lighting to color grading and export settings I'm tryna learn first tho.

How long does 4k recording usually last per video? My Lumix GX800 has a maximum of 5mins per video, varies depending on temperature and has to cool down for some time.

Great question! I don’t normally record longer clips when filming personally. But I believe it can record just under 30 mins. This of course would depend on battery charge and your SD card

I was recording 30 minutes with 4k in a tropical climate. It got slightly hot but nothing serious.

Obviously, the quality of the 4k is much higher than the 1080 but the boring issue for me is the focus ... I can live with the crop factor but the focus this the major issue for me

I’ve found that having an external monitor and focus peaking focus isn’t bad at all in manual. In a vlog scenario it could become a nightmare, but for B ROll, short films, etc..it’s becoming more natural to me (again) than using autofocus.

Loved your video! I just uploaded a video about my cannon m50 and my audio wasn't the best. I haven't bought a mic yet. Do you have any other suggestions to make the audio better?
@ChadEveryday4 жыл бұрын
If you don’t have a mic yet, you could try using your cell phone audio recorder and then syncing the audio. I have found that the mics in our phones record better audio than our cameras. You could start with the rode mic go which I believe is around $50

Chadeveryday oh okay I didn’t think of that. I’ll definitely try it. Thanks a lot!!

How do I get good focus on 4k without a external monitor, do you have any idea or a video
@ChadEveryday4 жыл бұрын
The way I do it without a monitor is to use manual focus and use Zebras. Areas highlighted in red will be the areas in focus. I don't have a video on it, but there are some great ones around KZbin talking about it. It definitely helps a ton. As far as monitors go, I got mine around $100. I'm glad I got it because my new camera doesn't have a flip out screen and it's the only way I can see myself now
