NOTE: In this video, I mention that EF and EF-S lenses work with the Viltrox M2 Speed Booster. That's not true. Only EF lenses work. Apparently, I confused the Viltrox M2 with the Viltrox M, the latter of which supports both EF and EF-S lenses, but doesn't demagnify the image. Sorry for the confusion.

Once again superb video Todd! I bought the Viltrox Speedbooster and it works great for B-Roll & portraits with a nifty fifty - taking it to 1.4 max aperture. The extra benefit is by getting an additional standard EF/EF-S to EF-M adapter the cheap Canon 50mm now becomes a 2 in 1 fast prime lens. All I needed was the EFM 22mm for talking head and wider B-Roll. And the standard M50 stabilized kit lens for occasional vlogging. The real gripe I have with the M50 is it’s limited dynamic range. It’s good enough in 1080p.

I've owned the M50 for three years. The 4K issues are well known, but it's also worth mentioning that with the 4K crop the camera records with fewer sensor megapixels than a typical bridge camera. Also, both the 24fps and 30fps 1080p settings in the M50 record at 28 Mbits. Only 60fps records at a respectable 60 Mbits. I now use this camera strictly for shooting wildlife with an adapted EF-S 55-250/f4-5.6 IS MK II at 60fps. The handheld results are pretty good, and the whole kit weighs in at 950 grams, or about 2 pounds.

4k for scenic video and filmmaking, using manual focus with focus peaking, 1080p for vlogging and action videos. Canon is clear in the manual that the 4k crop limitation is because of direct pixel translation (the crop is 4k pixels) rather than downscaling the full 6k sensor - ultimately, this is cleaner footage.

I have the Laowa 9mm f/2.8 which is a powerhouse lens for shooting real estate photos and videos. However, there are times where I miss having the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 shooting houses with poor natural light on cloudy days. Unfortunately, that lens is no where near wide enough for real estate. Viltrox mentions on their website that certain third party lenses such as the Laowa 9mm will work on the Canon M50. I get many who say, as long as it's an EF lens, and has the red dot, not the white, it should work. While some like yourself say it won't. I'll know next week for sure when it arrives. If not, I'll be returning it, and selling the Canon M50 along with the Laowa lens. And moving on to the Canon R50 with the Laowa 9mm f2.8 RF mount lens. RF glass is vastly superior to EF, and the R50 performs much better in low light than the M50, in addition to having amazing 6k down sampling to 4k which looks professional. And no 4k @30fps crop!

Great video, thank you. I think the 4k should be usable in the M50 for video, because with many high end cinema cameras, you need to manually focus anyway, and so, I don't understand why this makes the M50 "unusable" to so many people. Just go into manual focus and set up your shot properly. I think this is an issue only for Vlogging, I guess, but for filmmaking, if you're using something like a Blackmagic camera, or one of the really high end cinema cameras, you're only option is manual focus.... I think the speedbooster and the lenses you use open the M50 up to be a great 4k camera for this price.

Ever since I started using the M50, I've noticed a lot of my favorite KZbinrs (who have much nicer cameras to boot) struggle with autofocus. Much better to have sharp focus on a 1080 shot than to be blurry on a 4k one.

Hi Todd. Your contents are greats and visually appealing. Your tutorials about the Canon Eos M50 were really enlightening for me. I know there are better mirrorless in 2020, but... you convinced me to buy this camera, for a vlogging project. But apart from that, I'm basically a cinematic lover. I'd like to try to exploit the full potential of this camera. So let me ask to you: does it make sense, in your opinion, to mount on this camera a Meike Prime 35mm T2.1 lens (EF mount) using the viltrox speedboster or is it a completely crazy idea? In Europe this lens costs 460 Euros, so it is quite competitive in terms of price, but... what performance can it have on the EOS M50 for cinematic, compared to the 32mm canon lens that you showed in this series?

Is it theoretically possible to make an adapter that fixes the crop for ef-m lenses? Also, I am fine with 1080p. There is a speed booster made by another company that costs a lot more that has better image quality. It looks like the viltrox one is a no brainer. I really love my m50. The drawbacks don't draw me back. I am not experienced. I am getting better every day. I bought only one extra lens so far, the canon 22mm f2 pancake. I also bought an ND filter. Do you think it makes sense to buy a set of step down and step up adapters? I also use a small rig cage, which is so handy for attaching things like small lights and microphones. It is also good for attaching the camera to a tripod in a way to not block things like the battery door. My favourite accessory is a hollow batter that allows you to plug power via USB, plugged in or to a heavy duty battery pack. I can have the battery pack in my backpack or pocket of a vest etc. It makes the camera useable for days without interruption. OK it involves a wire that could get in the way, but once you get used to it, it's worth it for the peace of mind. If I am outside and want to put the camera on a tripod, I just Kay the backpack beside it. Imagine if Canon would stop being penny pinchers and give us normal 4K video with all the stuff that 1080p gives you. Canon does not have to be like that to save push people to upgrade. The best canon can do is get as many loyal customers as possible. They will get those customers by NOT being so greedy. They will sell way more cameras and lenses instead of holding back features for the sake of forcing customers to have to upgrade their cameras just to get things like dual pixel auto focus with 4K video. They would sell so many more m50s and those people would be so happy and for sure eventually buy a better canon camera instead of a Sony. Loyalty is the most impirtant thing, not penny punching every customer with reduced features. Could a firmware update theoretically give us dual pixel AF for 4K??

Beats me why someone who obviously hardly knows what he's talking about thinks that it is a good idea to do this talking in a youtube 'how-to' video. There are about a dozen youtube videos (if not more) explaining the pros and cons of the Viltrox speed booster for the Canon M series camera's way better. In general, the so-called 'Full Frame' lenses that go onto the Canon APS-C and Full Frame cameras work with the Viltrox speed booster, while the APS-C lenses, specifically made for the Canon APS-C bodies don't work. The latter cause heavy vignetting - that indeed isn't a factor anymore when you switch to 4k on the Canon M50, due to the crop. Many 'Canon APS-C' lenses from other brands can be attached to the Viltrox speed booster like the ones from Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina. (but you get vignetting when using them for anything else than 4k filming) The APS-C lenses from Canon, AKA the 'EF-S' lenses cannot even be attached to the Viltrox speed booster, since they have an extra plastic ring that interferes with the glass of the speed booster. (As in 'IT DOES NOT FIT') I have a Tokina 'full-frame' Fisheye 10-17 mm F3.5-4.5 DX that fits perfectly on my M50 + speed booster Combo, replacing a Tamron 'APS-C' 12-18mm lens that - though it could be fitted onto the speed booster - caused heavy vignetting (except in 4k of course) Finally, when it comes to 'vlogging in 4k' with a Canon M50, for relatively little money ($150 or so) you can get a 7.5mm 7Artisans F2.8-22 Eos-M lens with manual focusing, while the aperture on that lens is 'stepless'. Guess what is also on the M50? YES, focus peaking! (red, yellow or blue fringe around 'what is in focus') - excellent feature, especially when the dual pixel focus isn't available anymore and in 4k your autofocus lens starts to chase-all-over-the-place. Besides, when you film in 4k with that 7Artisans lens, it turns into a 12mm lens, which is ideal for your lovely talking head selfie shots. Set the aperture at F5.6, the distance at 2 feet, and your 'range of perfect sharpness' will be 1 - 40 feet or so... /Rant Peace, out.
@dominey4 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter - appreciate your thorough response. I pinned a comment (from me) at the top of this thread acknowledging my mistake regarding EF-S lenses. There are two Viltrox EF-M adapters - one that accepts EF-S, one that does not - and I accidentally mixed them up. Second, I'm glad to hear the 7Artisans lens works well for you when vlogging. And just to clarify, by "vlogging" I mean holding the camera out in front of you and filming while walking. In my experience, auto focus is important for this because the camera tends to move quite a lot. At least it does with me. I can see how an aperture like f/5.6 might create enough depth-of-field for reasonably sharp shots, but that could introduce a fair amount of noise and loss of image quality because ISO values would then have to be raised. It's really a no win situation, unfortunately. If someone introduced a prime 12mm auto-focus lens, that would be ideal.
@peterliemberg4 жыл бұрын
@@dominey The 7.5mm F2.8 works reasonably well outdoors on a sunny day in 4k IMHO. example here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jV69gWiZnZ5rmac If however, you want to use it indoors, or even in the evening with only artificial light, you are 'getting nowhere fast' if you don't put a video-light on top of your M50 - but a small '49 led' video-light on top of your camera gives reasonable results IMHO. See here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZa6l5RppK6hi5I (sorry, I'm speaking Dutch here - never got around to make English subtitles, but the images speak for themselves. They were shot with the lens at F4 and set on a focal distance of 0.6 meters. A led light like the one used here, with 49 LEDs will set you back $30 or so and is widely available...) Translation of what I say at the end of this video 'You will never be chased by your autofocus if you don't have autofocus' ;-) That said, though I still have a Canon M50 with 'an arsenal' of lenses and adapters, nowadays when I want to make a 'vlogging type' youtube video I find it much easier to use my new toy - a Fimi Palm gimbal camera that can shoot 4k in 25 or 24 fps. It is much easier to carry around, weighs 130 grams, and gives excellent results. For comparison: My M50 with a Tokina Fisheye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 on a Viltrox speed booster with a directional microphone, mounted on my Moza Aircross gimbal weighs MORE THAN 2 KILOGRAMS. The 'ease of use' of the Fimi Palm (that also can be equipped with an external microphone) by far outweighs the only slightly better footage I can get out of the M50 in the above configuration. The only setback of the Fimi Palm (or DJI Osmo pocket etc.) I find that I always must keep my reading glasses nearby... ;-)
@Chase-Video4 жыл бұрын
There might be something lost in translation here but your comment is coming off a little harsh there, mate. I agree with most of what you've said about the adapters and am familiar with the 7Artisans fisheye lens. I think the rolling shutter is still a bit much in a 4K vlogging test with the Artisan 7.5 but it might not be a big deal to everyone, I guess. Anyway, go have a pint and relax, it's almost the weekend :-)
