I've been a 1D & 5D series shooter for many years. I'm accustomed to carrying big, heavy cameras all day long. My wife bought an M50 for grandkids and travel. I loved it. I thoroughly researched compact mirrorless bodies and ultimately bought one myself (actually, the Mark II), here more than two and half years since this video was made. As a very capable, but inexpensive APS-C 1080/60 camera, the M50 still delivers. Yes, there are better spec-ed cameras these days. But I wanted something that would still be compatible with all of my existing Canon glass. (A speed booster option is fabulous with the M bodies.) Plus, I use Technicolor's Picture Style across ALL of my bodies for consistent color and editing. The only thing I might wish for is DPAF with 4K, but I'm not even using 4K with my 5DIV or 90D. There are MANY capable cameras these days; one could choose a new one based on a coin toss and be fine. The search for a one-body solution never ends. I like using specific tools for specific jobs. For example, my M50 will sit quite easily atop a gimbal rather often, an easy job with its super small size and light weight.

The Canon adapter would be better because you can use all of cannons lenses with it. EF and ef-s mount. The speed booster is only for EF Mount lenses. So unless you have a large collection of EF Mount lenses the regular adapter would be more versatile.

It’s not as good as a full frame viewfinder, but it’s very good for a mirrorless. I shoot surfing with mine and the crop allows me to use a lot smaller lens than a full frame DSLR does. I think I can see your points especially for someone like yourself who is used to better performing full frame cameras. The m50 is my first interchangeable lens camera and I'm very happy with it. I think for the money and its size it's a great camera aimed at people like myself. My only complaint is that there's not a good selection of native lenses for it yet. I mean, there's the 32mm 1.4 and 22mm 2.0 which are nice. And you can use the adapter with the EF 50mm 1.8 and still not have a large camera. I like that it's compact and even if I do get full frame in the future, I think I'll still keep this camera. If I ever do professional photography this will make a decent backup and it's great for travel due to the size. But I would love for them to come out with some better zoom lenses like a 50-250 f4.0 or so. That would be a fantastic addition to the lineup for a lens for travel and beginner photographers.

I'm a LI guy and enjoy your videos on Cameras. I have a big boy 5d Mark IV (came from a 5D Mark II) with a few L lenses and bought an M50 for vlogging. I also purchased the Canon adapter to use my big boy L lenses on the M50 and am blown away by the quality. Yes, crop factor is a bit of a pain, but for the $ diff between the two cameras, unless you're being paid for pics and want a rugged full form camera not worth the spend. Side by side, they are very much the same capability wise, with a few limitations that are intentional. I love depth of field (bokhu?) and color balance/detail with the L lenses. IMHO, DLSRs will be eliminated with mirrorless, just a matter of time like other legacy technologies. Given this direction, I think (although I love my 5D), its time to sell given its still a current model. If I want more of a pro camera, i'll buy an R with the proceeds. What's your opinion?

I totally agree with you the M50 is very capable, especially with the L lenses. The only drawback (other than a few neat features) is the high ISO performance. Bill-I’m in the same boat. Not switching off Nikon as I have good glass for it and I can’t deal with the cost of completely switching systems. I think it depends camper you are going from. And where you want your photography to end up. Interesting. I just came across a 2nd photographer in Yosemite using the m50 where I questioned the size (very small for large hands) and picture output. Last week while in Yosemite at 3am (milky way) I came across a fellow photographer at Tunnel View, he was utilizing the kit lens which I suspect is 3.5. I could see that his shots were were impacted by a high ISO. My other encounter was a newlywed couple on an obscure trail in front of El Capitan from golden hour through blue. I took a picture of the 2 of them utilizing the m50 and found it relatively easy to change settings (my daughter has a T6i) and produced a good image. I took sometime to walk through manual mode and low light photography given the hour of the day. I found the touch screen easy/quick to use and could see possibilities for the camera. it was also easy to share. In both encounters the lens was a challenge which I don't believe was not in their budget. Once you added the 24-70 L series I would think the camera would be the short fall. My comparison was to my Nikon d7200 with the 14-24 f2.8 lens where the results were much different. I had bought a d750 recently however after taking several pictures discovered that the difference wasn't that great and returned it and will order a Z6 once the return is processed. As both of you stated mirror-less looks to be the future, for $500 more it makes sense for me. I look forward to the touch screen, dynamic range, no mirror (what I see in the view finder is the image), etc..

I think that would be a great way to go. The still images you will get from the M50 will be at least as good as the t6i, and the M50 will be much better for video than your phone. It’s a win-win!

This is a very good camera. And it's very good for photography. it's just not the same as a full frame camera which is what I'm used to. plus I already have a full bag of Nikon camera gear so I would love to sell both systems and pick up the new Canon r. You won't be disappointed if you buy the M50.

I disagree, this is a fantastic little camera for photography. The one thing I will say is it all comes down to the lenses though. With the right lenses you can make some beautiful images.

I would say start with either the Canon M50 or Sony a6500 and build your lens collection from there. After shooting for a while you may see the need to upgrade if needed.

Will a speed booster make a difference in DOF with better glass?
@ApertureApex5 жыл бұрын
Yes, it will reduce the perceived focal length of the lens forcing you to stand closer to the subject (to achieve the same focal length). The closer your distance to the subject, the narrower the depth of field for any given lens.
@BillEricPhotography5 жыл бұрын
But by doing that I now have two bags filled with big lenses from two different camera systems. I already have everything I need for photography in Nikon equipment. I also have a nice little setup for video and photography with the M50. I'd love to just have one system that does it all.
@kenmasters0075 жыл бұрын
nikon -> canon -> sony -> fuji.... if your in the canon camp... just jump to fuji... btw you should do fine with the m50 to get shallow DOV... i get better results with the pancake lens or with a speed booster EF lens

Bm50 is great for video but I find the body to be a little bit too small for photography especially with big lenses. And I like my Nikon for photography but it's terrible for video. The R seems to be a perfect mix a photography and video features.

@@BillEricPhotography yes quite agree. Just getting to grips with it. I love the fact I can have set program modes for each video setting (24, 30,60fps, and 720 on the manual) makes it so easy to switch. Understandable if you are coming from full frame using L lenses then the M50 won’t deliver what you’re used to. But for what it is it’s really good.

Its ok if you have $2500 to spend plus expensive full frame lenses for a Canon R. The M50 is a $700 camera so the comparison is invalid. Here in Australia Canon have kept the M50 price low, but I still see vloggers on KZbin comparing it to the Sony a6600 which is also $2000. Even Nikon with the Z50 is priced at $2000. The Z6/7 are double that again. To me Nikon and Canon are starting to have a great mirrorless product, but they are shit scared of cannibalising their DSLR sales. I have news for them... look at the top ten sales list below. Its over for the DSLR...at any price. And there are mirrorless cameras out there with 100% ELED virewfinders (Olympus and Fuji) which are so good you won't look at the rear screen except to set it up. So what are the biggest selling Cameras in Australia as at February 2020 regardless of price: 1. Panasonic GX9 2. Sony Alpha A7 III 3. Fuji XT3 4. Canon EOS R 5. Canon M50 6. Canon EOS RP 7. Sony a6400 8. Olympus Pen EPL-9 9. Sony A7R Mk4 10. Fuji XT-100. Not one DSLR amongst them.
@BillEricPhotography4 жыл бұрын
That's a very interesting list. I think the camera companies know that this is where cameras are going but they still have to serve their professional market with dslrs. I think the Canon R5 is going to be the first mirrorless aimed at professionals and that's really going to hurt DSLR sales across the board. Nikon is going to have to come out with something similar to keep up with Cannon and then that will be the end of the DSLR!

First off, I’d like to say your videos are very informative and helpful. Glad I stumbled across your channel. Question....I have the M50, but I’d like to use it strictly for photography, especially for my scenic shots and nature/wildlife. I don’t want to spend another few thousand dollars for a full-frame DSLR as I’ll consider that in the future. I already have the Canon adapter that I use to mount other EF lenses. Is there a way I can treat my M50 as a full frame without having to buy a DSLR? Would the Viltrox adapter be feasible for my situation?
