I really enjoy that this camera came out and it was absolutely trashed and panned by the critics. Yet, once it got into people's hands, it has become one of the most popular cameras of the year. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. Is it incredibly fun, reliable, useful tool? Yes. Yes it is. I love mine and it has a very strong place in the market. Just know its limitations going in and exploit its strengths and have fun.

If they would have given you DPAF in 4K, this camera would would have been a great value even with the crop. Removing that really crippled what this camera should have been. Sure, you can manually focus but if manually focusing is your thing, for $800 you could get a Panasonic G85 for $800 with a kit lense and manually focus all day long on a much better video capable camera with amazing IBIS. Of course, for just 1080p the M50 could get the job done but still seems really weird they continue to cripple their camera's.

Justin, have you shot old Vintage lenses with the M50? Mirrorless makes it PERFECT for them! Before you ask "WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT???? Sorry I sound like a salesman...I'll admit to trying to spread the word...not great for selfie shooting obviously (no auto) but amazing broll lenses.

While I wish there were more native EF-M lenses, canon does have a new 32mm 1.4 EF-M (~51mm equivalent) coming out next week that I pre-ordered. I love my M50, but recently gave some serious thoughts to selling it for something else. The problem is that there isn't anything else that fits my needs. So, in regards to live streaming, the only way to go beyond the 30 minute limit is by using an application called Sparkocam. It technically overrides it by automatically resetting the camera every 30 minutes, which only causes about one second of a being frozen.

Hey Justin, we shoot our videos with a G7, and I’ve been planning to upgrade to a G85 to gain what the G7 lacks. Would you suggest the m50 over the G85? Thanks!
@Ephremjlm14 жыл бұрын
In case anyone wants to live stream on this thing, You have to buy a chinese or canon battery adapter that plugs into the wall, AND you will have to download the canon software for your computer, use the live playback (or whatever its called) and you run it at the same time that OBS is running. It shouldn't effect that much performance. Oh and the thing that screwed me up is that you need to have BOTH the mini HDMI, and the USB connect to your computer or laptop. So considering that you will have 3 cables connected and going out of this thing be warned that you might need to do a little cable management. However if you were coming from a Logitech C9022 like I was it is a huge upgrade. But as stated in the video you will have to have manual focus on and its kinda a pain in the ass so dont sit too far away. Otherwise the alternative is that all of the video screen real estate will be taken up by on screen stats and the face tracking box.
@Arlet113695 жыл бұрын
When you said that the camera goes to sleep at 30mins. Reminded me of when I was rec on my phone and my camera exited out after 10min and I noticed I have the display on only for 10 min until it goes to sleep. So what I did was touch the screen to reactivate the 10min mark so my camera doesn't exit. Maybe it's the same way with this camera? 🤔

I own M50 as well, prior having EOS 40D for ten years. For photography it is awesome. I recently started shooting video more seriously and the FHD video quality is great - I shot a wedding with that. As you mentioned in the video - 4K autofocus is unusable, so manual focus only. What I lack are two things: better focus peeking on the small screen (I really struggle here) and IS lenses. I used stabilized EF-S lens and it made a great difference. Also agree with the low light limitations for video. Other than that, the camera is great for the price.
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, tough to argue at the price. Incredible what is coming out of such a small, cheap package. Room for improvement still though!
@MariNate10166 жыл бұрын
Ticklersoft I have my sisters wedding tomorrow, what settings did you use?
@Ticklersoft6 жыл бұрын
FHD, mostly 60 FPS, AWB, autofocus, IS, auto ISO. The 60 FPS is for the slow motion. But as somebody said, use the slowmo only there where you intend the slowmo to have. In other cases use 25 FPS. As for shutter speed, always use double of the FPS. So 1/50s for 25 FPS and 1/120s for 60 FPS. I also used monopod for increased stabilization. As for lenses, I used the 22mm lens for interior shots and then I have old 17-55mm IS AF lens for the rest - mostly used the 55mm.
@MariNate10166 жыл бұрын
Ticklersoft dope I used the nifty fifty and the kit 15-45mm, got some amazing shots. I definitely pushed the M50 to its low light limit. Once it got over 6000 the pictures started falling apart due to noise, so I’ll keep that in mind when upgrading in a year or so, might switch to Sony if they get a articulate screen

I can't quite see myself putting my L lenses on it given the size of the body, so am just fine with my 80D. The Canon DSLR line has always been seamless in APS-C and full frame cameras in that L lenses "fit" for handling on the "smaller" cameras. This seems like a "gap" in the current mirrorless line-up, but I suppose the Canon "road map" has considered this.

Great points, you covered a lot of the positives and negatives I've noticed as well. This camera manages photos and videos well enough that I consigned my FF Nikon bodies and lenses. The Z6 and EOS R turned out to not fit my needs, so I'll wait and see what Sony and Panasonic announce before picking up a few more pieces of EF-M gear instead (or maybe an A7iii). Even if Canon does discontinue EF-M, I'm hoping it won't be for at least a few more years. The recent models like the M50 and M100 have good sales numbers so it wouldn't make much sense. They could do a lot with EF-M so it would be a huge shame if they dropped it. I really like the combination of portability and hybrid capability (If Canon didn't hold back as much as they do on the firmware side... potentially even better given their available technology).
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s actually a great all-around package. With a few more lenses and a couple limitations removed, this platform could CRUSH!
@ScottJWaldron6 жыл бұрын
Decided to go all-in on EF-M gear for now. Used some of my Nikon FF DSLR consignment as trade-in on the upcoming 32mm f1.4 STM, a M100, and a 55-200mm. Though the M50 works alright on a Zhiyun Crane-M I have, a M100 will make it easier to invert (the VF bump on the M50 requires a double hand motion to pass). I've been using a knock-off $30 action camera to film some things for my KZbin videos even when I have a pair of M50 bodies... I don't know, small gear that just works under a given situation feels really freeing when trying to make fun KZbin content (in my case a lot of videos where I go out and take photos so I need a camera to use and one to film myself). DPAF is a huge feature coming from gear I had to pre-focus for video since ~2009. It allows me to focus on content, story, and other aspects rather than fighting gear to get passable footage. The fully articulating screen and Canon's solid Android app help a lot as well to be efficient. I feel like I'm at that stage where passable video quality is good enough so I can put more effort into content details and audio. Maybe the A7siii will change the game with a flip screen, but I don't have the $3.5K plus the cost of lenses yet, haha.

I think Canon's current problem is being too good at producing products as you said "a little bit of everything"...aside from their dual pixel AF, they do that real well. But they haven't been good at pumping out competitively priced units that do more things well than just AF. So you think that this M50 is a better starter than SL2 if splitting hairs? I already have an SL2 as you may or may not remember, and am not going to have buyers remorse or anything...but curious to know your honest opinion. Sounds like the M50 is winning that race right now. I love these extended reviews, even though I'm not in the market for a new camera any time soon.
@JustinReves6 жыл бұрын
The only reason I swapped from the SL2 to the M50 was just the size which is handy when we're travelling a bunch. I don't know that I even really needed to. The Digital IS is nice, but if you're not missing it now, I wouldn't switch.
@The.Urban.Birder6 жыл бұрын
One key advantage of the M50 over the SL2 is that even while looking through the EVF, you have access to the same excellent AF as in live view mode (DPAF). SL2 is hobbled with the 9 point (one cross point) AF system. The reason I bought the SL2 is for the cheap and excellent image stabilized 55-250 telephoto lens. This lens has no equivalent price wise and quality wise in any other system (ef-m, mft, af-p). Sure, it can be adapted, but it is quite front heavy on the SL2 and the ergonomics would be worse on smaller and lighter bodies.

What are your thoughts on led light panels for help with low light performance? The small rig cage you have on it allows for a multitude of options for additional lighting.
@JustinReves3 жыл бұрын
Great in a studio setting but a tiny little light directly in a camera usually is not flattering to the person being filmed. The smaller the light source, the worse it looks. The closer the light is to the camera, the worse it looks. Having lights on the camera usually do both of those unless you want that look. Ok if you have no other choice but it usually looks odd.
@sentry98343 жыл бұрын
@@JustinReves I was referring to the larger camera mounted panels like this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGjTiJ9qhtl4sNU If this is too large there are smaller ones the size of credit cards available. Like this one. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2q7Y5l_nrujjpY

Justin, since you are so nice to answer questions let me try a few more :) 1. Does eye detection work with (EF) that sigma lens, and how fast is it. I am considering this camera for photos primarily. 2. Can you assign shutter and aperture on two separate dials , like the ones that go around and not the ones that you have to press 3. Does it have picture profiles? It looks to me on all samples that photos and video looks a bit dull, with not much punch. Thank you for your great channel ( subscribed ) and your time to answer questions.
@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I don't remember about the eye-AF. With the Sigma, I struggled a bit with photos and focus where it would back-focus slightly and it sounds like I'm not alone. There's only one dial so no to aperture and shutter. It does have a lot of picture profiles. I shoot RAW, though, and edit after, but you can make it as punch as you like! It edits beautifully.

Can you show us , in the field how this M50 tracking the video focusing with large apertures. For example with the 50mm 1.8 stn , at 1.8, or the 22mmf2 stm, at f2. In still objects, it's ok, but what about tracking on moving objects, like walking people, at f1.8 ? Thank´s.

Obviously this is an old video but what is the Sony that you replaced this guy with? I have a family friend that works for Sony offering their discount. I have an old rebel xti with a backpack of ef and efs lenses and my little boys have stumbled upon vlogging and photography. Might be time to relight that candle and pass them the torch at the same time. Just curious if I should stay in the Canon camp since I have the lenses that will work with a 3rd party mount or jump ship while the getting is good

I replaced this with the Canon EOS R, but I’ve been looking at my new vlogging rig being one of the new Sony a6200/a6400/a6600. All fantastic. If you don’t need all the “pro” features a6200 is great.

Hey Justin, Have the m50 & 15-45mm, 11-22mm, & 22mm lenses. Looking to make talking head interviews & b-roll. Which lenses would you recommend for the interviews & b-roll. Thanks

I just bought that almost exact setup (M50, Røde mic, Sandisk 128G) for my upcoming KZbin channel. Although I've only been playing around with it for now, it does seems to provide the best price-to-quality ratio on the market. It's also really fun to use. I do consider ordering the 22mm f4, but do you really think it's that much better for b-roll than just using the kit lens?
@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
The 22mm is f/2. The kit lens at 22mm is probably around f/4. That means that you're getting 4X as much light in at f/2 vs f/4 which means you can roll way lower ISO for cleaner video while also blurring that background a lot more! So for me, it's worth it, but it's not to say you can't get nice b-roll with the kit lens.
@firholfinance86235 жыл бұрын
@@JustinReves Thank you for the reply. Somehow I missed that it goes all the way to f/2. That does make a difference. Your burger footage really does look good, and at €180 on Amazon it may well be worth the purchase.

Hey there, as soon as I saw this video I clicked the subscribe button Just a quick question, I shoot some sports photography with my Canon 700 D, and was planning on upgrading by buying this canon M50, do you think it is a good idea? If not, what is a good option for me, for this purpose?
@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
It all depends on budget. For sports, the M50 is a solid budget option if you want to stick with Canon but the new Sony’s give you higher FPS and better autofocus. Even an a6100 is crazy. BUT like anything, it all comes down to the skill of the operator. And Sony lenses are typically very expensive and limited 3rd party options. I do enjoy mirrorless much more for photos though so I think anything mirrorless is a good upgrade!

as a nikon user myself i said it once and gonna asay it again: i do think canon is far superior on video capabilities. the SL2 and SL3 already show that on entry level with articulating screen and microphone port. that being said though i dont do video but only photography. which is why i went with nikon. their crop sensor cameras have only 1.5x instead of 1.6x like canon does, better dynamic range and just overall image quality but their focus in comparison is worse. dual pixel autofocus is very good and anyone that wants a camera for video id point towards canon without bias. ive just done plenty of my own research and see the advantages and disadvantages of both.

The 22mm is bonkers! If you get one lens get this. It’s sharp but not too sharp like the 18-35mm, it’s fast, it’s got one of the best all around field of view and it has macro.

Hi Justin M50 is definitely superior to SL2/200D but now with the arrival of SL3/250D, would you say it is superior to M50. Has SL3 addressed the shortcomings of M50 or you still think M50 wins?

The SL3 dropped 1080/24fps which is weird and it doesn’t have eStabilization if memory serves for video. But it does have a clean HDMI out with autofocus which is nice for live-streaming but I’d still be going M50 personally.

@JustinReves5 жыл бұрын
The problem with it is that if you’re using a lens like the Sigma 18-35, the Viltrox doesn’t dampen the sound enough and the autofocus noise will get into even external mic’s. The Canon one does a much better job controlling noise. At least in the ones people I know have tried. Had to return the Viltrox.
