We know there is room for a mechanical shutter between the sensor and lens (obviously). So remove that and use the space for filters and a shield for use when camera is shut off. Mechanical shutters are going away anyway (stacked/backlit sensor required).

Nikon did it. There's a chance Canon could do it too. I don't get the sense that Canon will coast with the R5 II or the R1.
@ytr8989 Жыл бұрын
You’d think this would have been in all digital cameras from day one.

Well, its been there for decades... Google cameras with internal ND filters ;)
@Chaelaz Жыл бұрын
This should have been in the works for ALL the manufacturers, like, a decade ago. Especially for Canon when they started appealing more and more to shooters using transitional cameras like the 7D and 5D series. The writing was on the wall that these traditional photography cameras were becoming more and more equal video camera, and in later years really videocentric. And moving more from prosumer to a lot of professionals adopting them. Sure, screw on ND filters work, but make it a bit less seamless switching from photography to video, and also less seamless use for video as well. Most prosumer camcorder and all pro cameras back in the day included built in ND. One would think that would have been a natural priority.
@gusthecanonrebel Жыл бұрын
Best part about built in ND’s is you won’t be limited by 3rd party glass that tends to shift WB making it harder to grade in post
@avdpost Жыл бұрын
The flange distance actually isn't an issue. Canon C70 already does it with the RF mount. Sure there is no IBIS, but personally I prefer the R5C choice to have it be non ibis. Very exciting.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
Yes. Patrick, not Peter, did a lot of work gathering the different patents. Canon didn't just spend a few months on this and file it away. They spent some time working on this for different camera bodies filing multiple patents. I'd say there's a good chance the R1 will have it, and it would be one of those features getting people to upgrade.
@avdpost Жыл бұрын
Honestly, if they did an R5C with an ND filter is would be incredible. But I could def see the R1 having the space for it with the prism no longer part of the equation. Could be a massive deal.@@OrdinaryFilmmaker
@OrdinaryFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
It's makes sense as the R5c is pretty much identical to the R5 in hardware with a few exceptions. I hope this happens. I think the probability for it in the R1 being higher than the R5...
@altonmarsh Жыл бұрын
I saw those postings. Of greater interest are the lightweight telephotos. ND filter use is rare for me. An internal polarizer would be my choice.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
It's still a 50/50 on this one, but the patents help propel it forward a bit in probability. What type of filters is another thing... Maybe the R1 gets better filters/.
@jackakramer Жыл бұрын
A software update providing lower ISOs would accomplish similar goals much more simply. Back in film days I often used 25 ASA (ISO) film in bright settings - why have 100 as the lower limit now? That would provide a few stops without the complexity of internal filters.
@iliaskapatos Жыл бұрын
For videos, the best DR on a R5C is with ISO 800, lowering the ISO would lower the Dynamic range, so I don't think this would be a good solution.

@gusthecanonrebel Жыл бұрын
This would be a game changer especially for lenses that can’t use filters like wide angle lenses or even bigger front end lenses where you’d need a ridiculous sized filter just for that one application Swapping out ND’s or using VND’s are still not the answer BUT THIS IS 🔥 Canon will revolutionize the industry if this comes out for sure 🙌🏼 I personally use in body filters on my R6 Mark ii from Kolari and they fit on both the R5 and R5C. I can definitely see this working. If they want to remove IBIS for the video focused camera body im with it!

I wonder how they are going to reconcile Variable character of the ND filter with its mechanism of putting it in and out of optic pathway... Unless this is a solid ND in which case it limits its usefulness significantly and raises question of what density we are talking about.

If you think back to the RF 100-300 that had no place for a drop-in filter.... it may be making more sense now.

Hello Simon, I have been listening and watching from the beginning. When I buy my new Canon R5-2, I will get it through you. I have a quick question... I shoot 2-3 hour live concerts for professional songwriters when I am not practicing law, fishing for salmon or writing music myself. I use to use a Canon 5DMK3 with Magic Lantern for many years till I got my Canon R5. I also bought a Ninja 5+ and loved it. I've shot 1000's of concerts. Last month, I upgraded and bought Ninja Ultra. I shoot 8K Raw 29.97 from my Canon r% into Ninja Ultra. I also record the soundboard audio with a Sound Device PreMix 3-6 and 10 and use 24 bit 192 Soundboard Audio, I master video and audio in FCPX on a MacBookPro M2. QUESTION: When I used the Canon R5 into the Ninja Ultra for the first time, The video and camera audio did not sync. Even though I recorded the Video/Audio through the camera and onto the Ninja Ultra, a 38 minute clip had the video and audio off by 2.6 seconds. In the beginning of the clip, everything lined up but at the end after 38 minutes, the singer opened her mouth and 2.6 seconds later, I heard the word she sang. This is even before I tried to sync the soundboard audio which was also off from the video. I have never seen this drifting happen before. Do you have any thoughts? Many thanks for an enjoyable program you put out. I try to never miss it. Sincerely, Joe Ray Skrha, Kenai River, Alaska...

You can totally shoot (photo) wide open on a bright sunny day if you can shoot at a high enough shutter speed. And a lot of cameras do, just not the R5 line which blows my mind. the 1/8000 that it's limited was a facepalm for sure andoObviously if you want to have a slower shutter speed yeah then you'd need an ND.

Pricing is simple and consistent. Just take the last few models. You'll generally see the price increase go up with the rate of inflation. Also look at exchange rate bumps. I'm forecasting a price between $3899 to $4199.

The future is one without the mechanical shutter the way i see it and furthermore it is one of the major causes of price depreciation on the secondary market. It would be a smart solution to instead of having a plastic "shutter" aka sensor protector like on the newest nikons to instead have an ND that automatically covers the sensor when shut down @@OrdinaryFilmmaker

If the R5 MKII will have it, then I see no way that there won't come also a R5C MKII with a internal ND. This body R5C, just with added ND would make a lot of R5C users to upgrade... Now I also thought what could the R1 have, what the R5 MKII won't have. And I think insteat the BSI Stacked sensot, it will also have a DGI option to get massive better DR for videos, but this is just a thought...
@billmartin1663 Жыл бұрын
It's all about the tradeoff. Bigger, heavier, more expensive cameras are okay so long as the added feature is something useful to the buyer. I wonder how many want / need an internal ND filter. I'm beginning to suspect there's a growing market for a "bare bones," lighter, smaller R5 just for the stills photographer. (Leica seems to be selling a lot of them. Canon COULD do it better!)

The ND filter doesn't have to be a physical thing. It would be the same if the ISO can be set super low. The ND is just to lower the light going to the sensor. A low ISO does this.
@OrdinaryFilmmaker Жыл бұрын
I mentioned that in the previous video David, but the patents clearly show a physical ND filter and multiple filters in the camera.
