I bought the R5 along with a CFExpress 128GB card, card reader, Canon EF to RF adapter, and screen protectors for the rear and top screens. After playing around with it for a week I kept getting an "Error 70" constantly. I checked around the internet to see what Error 70 was all about. After reading several variations I decided to return it and get a replacement. Now it works fine with no more "Error 70". Knock on wood and yes, it definitely drained my wallet. I needed something better than my Canon 5D Mk IV and the R5 was it, facial and eye tracking, facial autofocus as well as Clog2, rear screen scrolling, switch between photo and video with a push of the M-Fn button (programmed), and 4K 120fps.

@ericpersson87533 жыл бұрын
@@MarkHarrison4 overheating is only an issue if you are trying to record 4k HQ or 8K internal for longer times. Solution is simple, use Atomos Ninja V+ external recorder - record all day at 8k. Of course it makes sense if you are recording terabytes of video anyway. For 1080 120, no overheating internal.
@cipisound2 жыл бұрын
@@ericpersson8753 what about powering the R5 during long rec, can I use internal battery and a power bank in USB C to give power during recording? or to use a dummy?
@ericpersson87532 жыл бұрын
@@cipisound Hi Draghita, I believe it is possible to use the internal battery and supply power via USB-C port and achieve long record times. I have not tried that method as I already have the dummy battery + regulator with D-tap power connector which I used for EOS 5D previously. So for my tripod-mount setup, I have a single 198 Watt-hour V-mount battery, and I use that to power the R5, the Atomos Ninja V, and a Sound Devices audio recorder. The battery will last all day with plenty to spare. certainly long enough to fill-up a 2 TB drive on the Atomos :-)

well done, first r5 vid I can actually sit through. I have EOS R, R6 and R5 and I love them. R5 Is far easier to carry than my S1H and does same job. Also the smallrig cage with a side handle makes taking video with R5 or 6 a whole different ballgame, super light and highly stable.

To be clear: With the ninja v you can NOT record at 60fps with the R5. You will get duplicate frames and thus have choppy slow motion. Also, shooting Cinema gamut with log3 you will have very terrible colors. This is unfortunately not a complete solution for R5 users and Atomos has not addressed these issues.

Another great video! I love my SmallRig stuff but I agree with you about the mic flap on the R5. SmallRig should have added about another mm of clearance on the cage so the mic flap could be swiveled forward instead of having to be bent out of the way. I'm also a bit disappointed by the design of the port protector because they made it larger than necessary for the R5 in order to accommodate the different port configuration of the R6. It interferes with the rotation of the review screen. Not an issue when using the Atomos, but it's a nuisance to remove and the screws are easy to lose. I find myself using the Canon-provided plastic protector/cable support instead. I also picked up a RAVPower Pioneer 65W 4-Port Desktop Charger to charge via USB-C and act as an AC adapter and it has worked great so far.

Hi Todd, I looked for the answer in the comments but wasnt able to find it. Can you tell us, does the “dummy battery” get you 12fps all the time than? Or it is always stuck to 8? When l say “dummy battery” i mean the powered replacement battery with the cable! Tnx a lot, your video was great help ☺️
@EthanTrewhitt3 жыл бұрын
Fantastic tour. I agree with all the other commenters that your audio is top-notch. Since it's the YT comments section and engagement is good, I thought I might nitpick a few points: when you demonstrated the frame rate difference of the batteries it sounds like the camera was in the middle speed mode, where the speed indicator is white instead of green. Probably because the batteries were too low OR you had wifi or Bluetooth turned on. Another is that overheating can still happen with external recording (for me, at least) BUT if you set the LCD/viewfinder displays to turn off AND eject the CFexpress card, it helps a lot. The last nitpick is that the R5 uses micro-HDMI, whereas mini-HDMI is larger. Now I'm off to buy a cage for my camera...

Looking forward for a video about grip extensions. Like the EG-E1 for RP cameras. I hate the way my pinky has nothing to grip on the R5 and I am not willing to invest 350 into a full battery grip and add a lot of weight to be carried around with the camera. I just wanted that Canon or someone else had developed a simple ergonomic grip extension for the R5. The brackets and cages are not for that intent.

Hey Todd! New subscriber here, awesome vídeo, well lit, pristine sound, full of info. There is one thing i have doubt. You showed a 128gb sandisk cfexpress card type B, but according to Canon, only the 512gb sandisk card works for 8K RAW (sony and lexar 128gb works) are you sure i can record 8K RAW on a sandisk 128gb cfexpress card?

Thanks for such a great video. Can I ask whether you have tried the Smallrig cage designed for the R5 with battery grip attached? There is very little online about it, and the only extended video finds fault with the "pressure blocks" designed to slot into the eyelets on either side. One of these blocks is supposedly too big and can bend the little piece of metal in the eyelet. But if that only affects the ability to attach a strap, maybe just don't attach a strap? Thanks again.

Hi Todd, New sub here. Well done with this video and explaining through the different accessories for the R5/6. I couldn’t figure out how to charge the R and R5 through power bank and/or power adapter but your video validate it. Canon didn’t help with no guidance and/or video talking about this. Had the old LP-6 batteries, which can’t charge the R unless it is the LP-6N and the R5 with the LP-6N and LP-6NH batteries. Did you do trial and error or spoke to Canon to find out it needed a cable that is compatible with PD and the power brick needs to be at least 45W? Or it’s in the manual I never read? For new accessories, try to check out a recent Kickstarter that is still going on Indiegogo, it’s called X-tra which is another solution for quick battery + charger. And for filters, check out Revoring filters and rings. It is finishing delivering the Kickstarter campaign and should be available to the market probably in next 2-3mos I suspect. Thanks for the informative video and looking forward to more content. Happy NY!

I got Canon's dummy battery. Third party offerings are about $25. But I saw reviews claiming all of these cheaper alternatives bricked their camera. I didn't want to risk 3k to save a hundred bucks. Canon's adaptor is ridiculously overpriced though. This gouging, and their recent de facto ban of third party lenses, makes me feel like I should have gone with Sony. Canon just seems too pretentious and bourgeois as a company for me.
@dominey2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for letting me know. The adapter I talked about is still working fine for me, but now that you mention it, providing supplementary power via USB-C may be safer.
@conservovirtus57962 жыл бұрын
@@dominey I tried that initially, but as you said, it only seemed to prolong battery life. It's not viable for things like streaming. Hence why I got the dummy battery, which is absurdly overpriced, and I only got because I didn't want to end up one of the few with a fried camera. Most reviews said they worked fine, but I just didn't want to risk it to save a hundred bucks. I felt like a power supply that plugs into a wall outlet was one of the few things on which I better not scrimp. With pretty much everything else I'm buying third party (e.g., Neewer, Godox, etc.).
