Very good. I programmed some camera functions I hadn't thought about before It's a complicated beast. However I love my M-fn button which is programed to switch c1-c3 which are set to c1=1.6 crop in Tv, C2= Av in FF, C3= M with auto ISO. The 4th press puts the cam back in whatever the normal mode is set for. My control ring on the lens is set to select AF mode as I occasionally like zone for BIF on a white sky. Great work. Love your vids.

Using the M-Fn button for switching from photo to video is awesome!! I love it!! The R5C has a physical switch and takes a few seconds to start but on the R5 it's instant 8K!! Another cool trick is using THREE Back Button Auto Focus. I forget the name of the genius KZbinr who figured it out to give proper credit to but I've been using it for a year now and it's great! AF ON=Zone focus, *=Spot focus, and AF POINT SELECT=Eye Detection ON (the 3rd button HAS to be set for Eye Detection ON but the first two buttons can be set however you wish).

Super review. Using the * button for Eye Focus mode is a great idea. I had been using * to switch from the usual One Point focus to the tighter Spot focus, but this is much better. Here’s a suggestion to consider. As I shoot nearly exclusively in Manual/Auto ISO mode, it is seldom necessary to change ISO. So, rather than assigning the new third dial to set ISO, I program it to adjust exposure compensation and the lens dial (on RF lenses or the EF to RF adapter) to ISO. I use either the latter or the screen on those rare occasions when a manual ISO setting is required. This way, each of the three easily accessible dials programs one of the principal adjustments. Main dial for shutter speed and large dial for aperture (as we’re all accustomed to using on the DLSRs) and new, third dial for exposure compensation. The Set button is reserved for returning the focus point to dead center, a method which, for me, is quicker than fumbling with the joystick.

I just purchased an R5 and performed the 1.5.2 firmware upgrade. I am using your video to set it up for wildlife. As an inholder in Denali National Park and also scheduled to travel to Africa (Botswana) this winter, I am lookin forward to using the camera. Your video for me is a lot to digest and it requires a bit of pausing and sorting things out but I am anxious to head out and try it. I too have L lens that require the RF adapter and wanted to know if that requires any special considerations. Thanks so much for the video. Living in Alaska is a photographer's dream location. Especially for wildlife. I greatly appreciate your effort.

Great video Janine! I am definitely going make a few tweaks to my camera. I actually bought the R5 for the 45 mp not for video. I'm sure I'm not the only ones. In fact I don't really care about the video at all. I decided to make use of the custom functions making C1 animal eye detection and C2 people. I personally choose to do this so I don't have to go to the menu at all. For me, it makes switching from animals to people or a more manual mode very quick.

Just purchased a R5 so this video was really helpful. Have set up the 2 back button focus buttons which are working well. One question: when photographing birds in flight is there any advantage of initiating focus with either button? On a recent session I initiated focus with the eye detection and it appeared to work well. Haven’t had a chance to review images on the computer yet for sharpness.

Fascinating exercise Huw, personally, to my eye the digital JPEG was the most black & white of the three! certainly more contrast in the digital. I prefer to take colour and change any picture that doesn't appear to be working then I will convert it to mono in software, where you can even add a red filter. But I understand you initial comments about black & white being not that, so often my pictures have a tendency to have a green hue when printed, but at the end of the day we all see colour or lack there of differently, so if you are happy with the results that's what matters!

Hi thanks for the vlog on settings it works a treat on my R5. I have found one thing I recently took a series of shots of a couple of Zebra at our local wildlife park. I got great results but the poor camera got very confused using the eye recognition system it must be the patterns around the eye.

As I understand it Canon used domestic pets to "train" the autofocus system and their technical marketing material actually states that it is optimised for cats, dogs and birds. So the less an animal looks like a cat, dog or bird the more the autofocus is likely to struggle. I have e.g. found it to be "less accurate" on horses, although it still works surprisingly well. This brings me to a suggestion you may want to give try when the system struggles to identify the face/eye or locks onto the "wrong" eye: I have found that it is possible to use the touch and drag autofocus to "guide" the system to the correct subject (a little orange circle appears that you drag to the subject and when you release your finger the system locks onto that object). Also when it identifies multiple eyes you can use the joystick to select which one you want to track. Lastly (and I might be wrong) it looks like when you selected the drive mode you selected High Speed Continuous Shooting and not High Speed Continuous Shooting Plus. Just be aware that with the former the maximum burst rate is 8 shots/sec. For 12 shots/sec you need to select the Plus mode. Thanks again for an interesting video.

I linked a video to a great camera focusing set-up from Michael The Maven for the R5/6 & these guys deleted the comment. It allowed you to use a single auto-focus point place it over your subject then hit the hold AF-ON button to activate the Eye-Autofocus onto the selected point it works awesome.

Hi Janine you videos are exceptional.I have just shot with my R5 and 100 to 500 in Umfolozi game reserve South Africa .The eye detect for birds is excellent but for animals is a disaster with 1.5 firmware update.Would be great if u review the latest firmware .Vasili

That was super helpful Janine, thanks you so much. You spoke about possibly needing a larger and faster computer when using the R5 because of the 45 mp sensor. I was wondering if you've tried using CRAW as opposed to RAW files. So far I'm not seeing much of the difference between the two but I was wondering what you thought of that? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work!

Hi Leonard, I haven't used it an awful lot to be honest but couldn't see a huge difference on the images I have shot. It just feels a bit weird shooting such a large mega pixel sensor but not using the full quality. I mostly struggled with the processing speed though when it came to the video performance of the R5, which is a totally different ball park... cheers Janine

@@PangolinWildlife I couldn’t see a difference as well and the photos looked better on my computer than if I used the 1.4 teleconverter which was surprising Janine.

I love my R6. I use the canon 600mm f4 version 2 and the 100-400mm. Have you reviewed the 100-500mm lens yet? I really don’t want to upgrade but it does seem like a lovely lens! I shoot mostly birds so perhaps the upgrade wouldn’t be as necessary?

interesting take on the cannon R5, I am a Nikon shooter, and interesting to compare the two, ONE other point re: the back button focus; on my Nikons, the GRIP and BODY AF-ON switch/ system can be activated independently, ie have the afl/ael button on the body OR the grip activate focus, and the shutter NOT, OR to have one shutter button (body) operate 'normally' despite the AF-ON being activated on the grip ie: this setting ONLY activates back button AF ON the GRIP, NOT the BODY!! - one thing to definately be mindfull of, esp. if you change from portrait to landscape orientation often, or as the subject warrents it.

Thank you for such an intensive and completed tutorial. The quality of the video is superior. Your video definitely shortened my learning process for R5. I still have one puzzle need help. I like to shot with exposure compensation adjust to -1/3 while keep the f stop, speed, and ISO remaining the same. However, with these settings, on M mode, when I reduce the exposure compensation, one of the other three settings will automatically changed. Am I missing some settings? Thank you for helping....

From Canon Live Chat: You would have to use FV mode which has options to be equivalent to M mode and other modes such as P, TV, AV, Canon R5 settings. For equivalence of M mode, and the set shutter speed, ISO and aperture; on page 106 of the camera manual you can see a chart breaking down functions how to use exposure compensation while manual selecting shutter speed and aperture set.

19:38 good to know to disable GPS of photos so endangered species can't be tracked. I own a Canon 5D Mark III. I don't photograph wild life. But I do photograph still life like flowers n foliage. I find this settings video to be comprehensive and thorough. I find videos about the most recent Canon cameras to be helpful in my knowledge and understanding of photography.
