FYI, electronic shutter will output 12-bit RAW files instead of 14-bit for mechanical and Elec.1st curtain mechanical.

won't mechanical also create a bit of shutter shock at slow speeds?

To add to this H+ drops down to 13bit A/D as well. Electronic shutter is still useful for long periods of high speed continuous shooting sessions, say at a beach with monster waves.

Electronic shutter won’t let you do long exposures slower than 0.5 sec and it’s only 12 bit raw. You need to be in 1st curtain electronic for landscape. Least amount of shutter shock if any at all, full 14 bit raw (when not in H+). I only use electronic for 20fps for action and wildlife. Also full mechanical will give you best bokeh for portrait photography when used with a fast lens wide open and fast shutter speeds. Hope this isn’t too confusing lol

Love it that you are back with Canon Nick! Not that I care too much about any of these brands but my selfishness is that now that you are with Canon, I will be able to learn tons of stuff of like in this video and use those in my own setup.. You'd be amazed at how hard it was to find Canon Landscape Pro photographers to learn their setup when I bought by R5 just a year ago.

*PSA* for anyone who wants a deep dive into the R5's menu: The KZbin channel "Points in Focus" has over fifty videos (and counting) that go in depth into the different Canon R5 menus and menu options. Jason, the guy that runs the channel, is a software dev or a system admin-I'm not sure-but he has taken a really organized and analytical approach to the topic. If you want to devote the time, you will come away from his channel with a comprehensive knowledge of just about every setting and why you would choose one over the other. Have something handy to take notes. :-)

Stay out of electronic shutter for high dynamic landscape. It drops you from 14 bit to 12 bit. This means that the focus bracketing feature will also drop you down. Kind of a bummer I know. I’ve found that for scenes that don’t have a lot of dynamic range there’s virtually no difference. Great video. Hope you’re feeling better. ✌️

Agree. It’s just baffling that focus bracketing forces you to use electronic shutter. For goodness sake: if you’re going to the trouble of doing a focus stack, you obviously care about image quality, so why would you accept 12 bit raw? I was super disappointed when I discovered this.

Thanks Nick, interesting Video. FYI (?) I set my back button as follows, because I do a lot of wildlife as well as landscape... AF-ON button = back button focus, AE Lock button is eye detection AF, and AF point button flips between one short & servo, and the multi-controller selects the AF points.

Hi, I wish photographer like you with that much knowledge and artistic vision would use cheap APS-c or MFT Cameras or even the old Canon 5D Mark 2 to show us poor photographers that, you don't need the LATEST AND THE GREATEST to capture beautiful images.

Hey Nick, just an FYI that the color space is indeed only for JPG shooting and does not impact RAW. But I did want to mention that your selection of the ES mode over Mechanical makes sense, but you are losing 14-bit files. That won't matter to a ton of people, especially of (like you sometimes) are exposure stacking to use luminosity masking and whatnot down the line, but if you find shadow area(s) that need a few stops of lifting, the data will be much better retained with 14-bit over 12-bit. However, you may want to try Electronic First-Curtain for a best-of-both worlds option as it eliminates most of the rolling shutter and flicker issues that full electronic gives you, ditches the shutter shock of mechanical, but unlike the comment you pinned, it does give you 14-bit files according to Canon. Lastly, nothing wrong with ISO 50, it does shoot at 100 (overexposed), then process down to 50, meaning you might see some highlight clipping. What hot shoe cover is that?

You probably know that you can set up the * button for animal eye AF; that way you have immediate access to back button AF for single point (AF-on) and for animal eye (*). Also, (as Video Hummus mentioned), electronic shutter reduces your dynamic range by more than one stop. I keep it on electronic 1st curtain most of the time for that reason. Leofoto makes a really nice and inexpensive L-bracket; much better than the one from Sunwayfoto. I didn't see a need to shell out $185 for the RRS version. Have fun with your new camera!

I'm also thinking of ditching my Sony for an R5 because of the ridiculous language lock policy here in Japan. Sure I can get clued in with the menus but having them in my Native language just takes some of the stress out of screwing around with the already convoluted Sony menus in the field. Thanks for your set up share. It might indeed be time to jump ship and sell everything Sony that I own. Cheers!

Thanks for running through that. Couple of things I do... I set the eye focus to off in the main menu, and then I set two back buttons for auto focus. One does "regular" focus - I tend to use spot. The other does eye auto focus. I find in many situations eye autofocus will struggle unless I start with regular. This helps with that. Also, I have three different set ups saved. One for action. One for landscape. One for macro. Its a great camera - I guess all these modern cameras are great. I love it.

Glad you brought that up; it's my favorite approach to AF on the R5. You can also incorporate a third button into this! Try re-mapping the "AF point button" to "Switch to registered AF function" instead. Then register the 1-spot AF to be called up at the push of that one (otherwise not often utilized) "AF point button". Especially helpful for shallow DoF moments, what this third AF button means is that now when you hold down BOTH the "AF point button" and the "AE lock button" (they're like 3mm apart from each other) you'll get just the 1-point AF for those moments where you need to command focus on one tiny little point in the composition but the AF keeps hunting around inside your current AF mode's active zone.

Nick, one important thing that Canon fixed in the latest firmwares is the option to backup your settings, like Canon1d series. So, when you format your camera, you will lose that small file with your settings. Very important to make a backup in your computer so, you can copy it over later and........ you dont need to do all of this again :) And, you can create custom setups and save all those files if you need more that 3 customs (Canon allow us three customs setups in our cameras if I am not mistaken right now). I hope it helps.

Thanks for sharing your setup, Nick! As you said, you may need to change your rear screen's brightness (10:31) from time to time. Usually I find I have to turn the brightness up temporarily (in bright sunlight, etc) and recently I learned a convenient way to do this: using the customize buttons menu, re-map that little lightbulb button on top (usually it just "illuminates" the mini-screen) to instead "Maximize screen brightness (temp)" and now you have one quick button push to temporarily crank up the rear screen's brightness to max! It then resets (back to brightness 4) after the next screen power cycle (or if you press the same button again).

a funny note about shake induced by something like the shutter...it actually has less effect as the exposure gets longer, past something like a couple of seconds; if you think about the "equivalent exposure" of the movement, it's quite short, and the movement quite small, do that it's kind of 'painting's the blur, with less effect over time. I'm guesstimating shutter shake to be (depending on the tripod/head stability) to be something like 1/60, with less motion over time. thus, on a 1 second exposure, the blur is 5 stops below the total exposure time, and on a 10 second exposure, 8+ stops 'down'...it would be pretty interesting to actually measure the amount of camera shake with an accelerometer, or a laser pointed at a wall 5 or 20 metres away, recorded on high-speed video ...just a thought.

Well, even though I shoot with a Nikon it was informative to see some of the features of your Canon R5 especially when it comes to the shutter. I will try to see if I can adjust some of the cameras I have to electronic and see how it works. On the Nikon they call it a silent shutter that I hardly notice if I took the image, It is interesting there is always something new to learn and that makes the whole photography work interesting. The smaller file size of this Canon camera vs the Sony you have should gelp with the noise isn't it? Okay, thanks Nick looking forward some of the images from this new tool next time. Cheers.

Definitely a few differences in how I set mine up, but a lot of similarities. I also put "Airplane Mode" in the personal menu. I usually keep Airplane Mode on (to save battery), but if I want to use the Canon Camera Connect app to do remote shooting, or transfer a couple images to the phone for a quick share, it's extremely fast and easy. I actually need to re-do the personal menu as I had thrown a bunch of things in there, but it's just a jumble and I've intended to go back and actually organize the order a bit better.

My only beef with the RRS L bracket (and it looks like the sunway one has the same thing) is the notch on the side mount. They have a very good reason for doing it, it's the only way to get the lcd horizontal. But it has a tendency to register touches on the screen if it makes contact, and when I line the sensor up on my tripod plate it doesn't cross the gap, reducing stability. They did the best they could given the constraints the camera body imposes.. but it still bugs me.

I read somewhere that you were planning to take this video down because of complaints from some of your followers. I wish you wouldn't do that. Your advice is always valuable to me. As a Sony-gone-to Canon-shooter myself, I totally agree with your assessment of the Sony menu system, etc. It's a big reason I went for a Canon R5 and RF100-500mm lens, even though a comparable Sony A7 system including a 200-600mm G-Master lens, was cheaper. In retrospect, I couldn't be happier with my Canon gear for bird photography. At the ripe old age of 80, this camera body and lens could well last me for the rest of my life. Please keep up your good and inspiring work, Nick, and try your best ignore those who spoke out against your opinions. The rest of us are excitedly watching for new content and wishing you well.

Highlight Tone Priority _does_ affect RAW files, and is a very useful function that more Canon shooters should be taking advantage of. This makes sense if you understand how HTP works. As you no doubt realize, a sensor does not become more sensitive to light as the ISO is increased. Instead, the signal coming off the sensor is amplified by a factor determined by the ISO setting. Highlight Tone Priority selectively amplifies the signal coming off the sensor, amplifying darker areas more and brighter areas less, and thereby increasing DR in images shot at ISO settings above the base ISO of the sensor. It is essentially tone mapping your image before the data is written to a RAW file. This is why the feature requires an ISO setting higher than the base ISO which uses no amplification. However unless you use Digital Photo Professional, you won't immediately see a difference between an ISO 800 CR3 file shot with HTP "on" and an otherwise identical ISO 800 CR3 file with HTP "off". This is because other editing programs ignore the metadata that tells the software how to tone map the image. But the extra editing latitude _is_ there in the file. You just have to tone map the image manually to see it. This is easy to test yourself by shooting two identical RAW images at ISO 800, one with HTP on, the other with it off. Blow out the highlights and then enjoy the increased recovery latitude in the image that was shot using HTP. I love that we're getting some good Canon gear talk on your channel now.

I rely a lot custom modes. My "normal" modes setup is optimized for handheld photography (I almost only use Fv) - e.g. continuous AF, AF on the shutter button, etc. And then the custom modes are normally setup for tripod use. back button focus, point-and-touch. C1 is M - C2 is Bulb, and C3 is currently set for astro stacking. I appreciate the preview in the viewfinder. It will only show the preview if I fully release the shutter button, so if I need to be ready for the next shot, I just keep the finger on. Otherwise it's just a quick move of my thumb over to the magnify button to check sharpness. (I think there's an option for the zoom to center on the focus point).

I do not have a Canon, however, seeing what you set and why allows me to look at my camera settings and set the things I think should be set. I do not agree 100% but that is fine. It does allow me to hear different ideas which is good. Thanks.

Interesting video. I set mine up in a similar fashion but used C1 mode for landscape, C2 mode for wildlife with animal AF on with a higher shutter speed set to go. Also, I shut off a few of the shooting modes and AF methods (the zones), then set up a button on the back to cycle through those modes (spot, eye af, expanded spot). I also enabled touch and drag AF to move my AF points around instead of the controller. I haven’t set up a function for the Len control ring yet. Haven’t found anything compelling to set it to. One question I have in regards to the R5 with RF lenses…is it necessary to shut off IS and IBIS when on a tripod shooting landscapes? I know by using the lens’s IS switch it does shut off both, but is it necessary? I’ve left it on and didn’t notice any issues but never found an official answer.

I love the touch and drag AF function. Use the rear lcd as a mouse pad for your af point. It's much faster.

I have mode C1 set for night use including the display brightness. Also if you go into the detail settings for the AF back buttons you can set each with one-shot or servo. I've found that I prefer multi back button autofocus over an AF start button, AF pattern and the 1shot/servo.

@@NickPage thank you. I've certainly got three BB-AF buttons set up with three completely different AF styles It took a bit to get that to work the way I want but it was worth it. On a complete non sequitur I noticed you use auto light balance with RF lenses having the control ring I've put the aperture back on the lens where it belongs I also shoot film so it's easier but that frees up the back wheel for on the fly Kelvin adjustments with four dials on the camera I have the remaining two set up top dial ISO & shutter dial set to shutter speed. This allows me to "change film stocks" on the fly. Sorry about this novel length post. Have a good day.

Even though I am a Sony shooter (and was hoping to see an a7Rv setup video for when mine arrives - oh well), I still found this useful and interesting. I had not considered using electronic shutter over mechanical. Aside from dynamic range limitations mentioned in other comments, I wonder about rolling shutter for birds in flight. Not an issue?

I have my image review set up where when I press the magnifying glass it goes straight to maximum magnification at the point where the focus point was. It’s a quick way to verify whether the image is in focus. You can also save all the customisation that you have done onto a SD card. If your camera has to be reset for any reason, such as when it gets serviced or repaired, you can just put the SD card back in your camera and have all the custom settings put back as you had them . Thanks for sharing your settings Nick - and I agree wholeheartedly with you the UTILITY of a camera is a very important function.

Welcome back to Canon, Nick! Have you seen the double-back button focus set up for wildlife? For more complex scenes, maybe where birds are in a bush or obstacles maybe near the bird when attempting to focus, the AF system can still get a little confused about what it's supposed to lock onto. For this, you can use the AE Lock for AF, then slide your finger across to the star button and set this up for Eye AF, ensuring you smash the focus every time. There are several videos on KZbin about DBBF, but I found this change really useful. I know you have the star button set up for another function, but for wildlife, set it up under the custom setting then you can revert to normal for landscapes! Hope this helps 🙂

great to see your cam setup ideas. I use touch LCD for scrapping the AF point around. You can set it up to only sense in the top right corner of the LCD. This bit is easily accessed by your thumb and the small area speeds up dragging the point around. Also this is not for everyone, but I use an extra long base L bracket and have the portrait arm on the grip side. This way the flippy screen is totally free. It increases bulk round the hand hold but its not too bad, and I dont use my cam hand held much anyway. I love the Flippy screen too much to limit it in any way

We need to remember that the intervolmeter bulb mode will only go up to 5 seconds, to get the extended time (5 seconds and above) you must be in mechanical shutter.
