In this week’s episode, we discuss the best camera settings for landscape photography. This topic is a somewhat difficult one as there isn't a universal answer to the question "what's the best settings for landscape photography?". There's many constantly changing variables to account for when it comes to determining the best camera settings to use. What I hope you're able to get out of this week's episode is a workflow that you can apply the next time you're on-location that'll help you determine the best settings for your landscape photography.
In this video, I share the five question workflow I ask myself while on-location that helps me determine the best camera settings for the landscape photography situation I happen to be in. This workflow has simplified the decision making process for me and most importantly has enabled me to feel confident that I've selected the best camera settings. Light and weather conditions change quickly while on a landscape photography trip. It's easy to miss one of the many variables that require consideration and having an organized and repeatable process related to selecting camera settings is of the utmost importance.
I hope this episode provides you with a simple workflow that you can apply to your next landscape photography trip that'll enable you to feel more confident that you've selected the best settings for the photography scenario you're in!
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

I'm a beginner and have been learning about exposure and the exposure triangle. Through reading and watching KZbin I have a pretty good grasp of the exposure triangle. Now I've been STRUGGLING with WHERE TO START! This video helped me tremendously in giving me a starting point from which to build on. Thanks Mark, you are producing some great content!

After several years of not being able to commit to buying a camera and taking iPhone only photos, I recently got a great deal on an A7rii with 50mm lens and have been diving in head first. These videos have been the most helpful for someone who is just getting into it but isn't too dumbed down or too much time explaining stuff. Lots of great tips!!

As always, wonderful job with your videos. I love that you methodically lay your ideas out in logical steps. One thing that I would love to see, is at the end of your videos, listing the steps that you went through as a summary, so I don’t have to go back through and find them if I didn’t take notes the first time (totally my fault). But the summary wrap-up with the items you discussed would be very helpful. Again, you’re a great teacher so kudos to you, and keep the great videos coming!

Absolutely loving learning from you, Mark! You are clear, concise, patient and honest. Your integrity comes through loud and clear and I plan to view all of your videos. I'm taking notes, but would love to have a list of all you've done. I took a photography class a couple of years ago and learned a lot, though mechanics are not my specialty. It seems that all learning experiencing are finally beginning to gel, just in time, however, as I am on the brink of retirement. I have suddenly become passionate about landscape photography and took my first intentional photography journey to Glacier National Park last month and am, for the first time, very pleased with my work. Thank you for your help! Looking forward to your Wednesday video. What time?

I'm an amateur landscape photographer & have been using mainly the auto settings for yrs as the manual setting seemed too daunting & I wasn't sure what certain settings were, most info on net or reading material just seemed too technical or complicated, to me, until I stumbled onto your site, I thoroughly enjoyed this video, & understood the content! Thank you so much for giving me the knowledge & confidence to actually experiment with these settings. Thank you!!! just subbed

Congratulations to reach the 50K subscribers 👏🏼 I'm always happy when I see a new video from you. I mostly shoot landscape in A-mode, but this also depends (as you mentioned) if there are some dynamic elements as moving leaves. Sometimes it can be tricky if you have strong wind, the trees are shaking but you also have water in your composition and you want make a long exposure. Clouds are also a big topic and how longer exposures can change them and the look of the photo. And I mostly use ISO 100 (I own the A7R III) when I use the tripod (of course not for astrophotography) and Auto ISO for hand held photos.

For the Sony A7 models; the base ISO is 100, I believe the 50 and 64 ISO are extended ISOs (that is why they have the lines around them) and the extended ISO are not as clean and have less dynamic range than the base ISO of 100. You might what to research that to verify to make sure you are getting the best possible results.

Part of the process I also consider is "do I need one or more filters" as these also impact on the amount of light hitting the sensor and how much do I want to slow down the water with a NDF or reduce the glare with a circular polariser. As with your other video suggestions, take more shots changing composition with landscape and portrait variations and it never hurts to bracket your shots so you have all bases covered during post-production. Great advice.
