Wow, im awe inspired by this video! Thank you so much! Also have the R5C for my little solo productions and i have it rigged up quite heavy. This video is making me think i could do without focus motors and just rely on the camera body with ext monitor and v-mount, and use only the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 with autofocus I currently use cine lenses with focus motor but it all feels a little jampacked and sluggish Anyway i loved every bit of this video and especially thankful for that beautiful behind the scenes as well. Best of luck to you mate!
@DanielErnst6 ай бұрын
thanks so much again 🙌😊 That's the best thing about the R5C in my opinion - it works fully rigged up, but also stripped down to just the camera and a lens. I also have some manual lenses but I often feel like they are standing in my way when I want to shoot something. I spend more time dealing with focus, than concentrate on composition and the actual filming haha The R5C with the 24-105 2.8 is a beast! Tried this combo in Northern Norway last winter and absolutely loved it 🙏

Thank you so much 😊💙 appreciate it! Since they made the latest firmware update it got really much better. I get around 90min runtime with power saving on with one battery which is not much less than other cameras. Before the update December 23 it was really bad, so most reviews probably refer to this. So I was good with carrying 2 extra batteries for shoots around 3h - if I wanted to have more I just used my VMount Battery that lasts the whole day 😊

Hey Daniel! I'm filming up north in Canada in super cold temperatures (-30 or so Celsius) on the r5C, and wondering if you have any particular tips related to gear or production planning to keep the R5C working smoothly. How was it in cold temperatures? How did you handle protecting the camera? Thanks for any info!
@DanielErnst9 ай бұрын
Hey Brian 👋 I had no issues with the cold, however it went only down to -10°C, so not much. But I was currently in Finnish Lapland and had temperatures down to -35°C and the camera + lens worked absolutely fine. No problems at all except from smaller, occasionally frozen things like zoom ring and some snow in the fan, but nothing stopped the camera from working. One thing that was annoying was the Smallrig V-Mount Batteries. It seems that they only have a working temperature down to -10°C, so they shut off at my temperatures. I did some research and the FX Lion apparently are able to work until -20°C. But thats just something you need to prepare to when using V-Mounts. Otherwise just keep the Canon batteries close to your body to keep them as warm as possible when not using them. I also left my camera outside the whole time, once you bring it inside, it will fog up completely and you won't be able to shoot with it for quite some time. Enjoy the cold!
@appleby18789 ай бұрын
@@DanielErnst Thanks so much for the reply sir! Great to hear that this was your experience. Currently, looking at the forecast of where I'm going, I'm not expecting there to be rain/snow. With that in mind, would you suggest just keeping the camera body out in the elements and not covering it up with a rain cover or something like that? Thanks again for the replies mate!
@DanielErnst9 ай бұрын
no worries man 🙏 Just put a rain cover over it when you leave it outside, in case frost comes it won't go on your camera

Dude, thanks for this video... It's just stunning! Congratulations 👏 I came across your channel because I'm considering buying the Canon R5C for a similar project to yours, heading to the other side of the world into unexplored mountains, fully autonomous, with a friend, to shoot a short film during a one-month trek (yes, I’ve planned for several V-mounts & powerbanks haha). I'm currently hesitating between the R5C and the recently released R5 II. For me, the ideal would be to have an R5C with C-log 2, but hey, the perfect camera doesn’t exist. As a photographer, I’ve been a Nikon user since the film days, but I'm ready to switch to Canon for this camera. For video, I’ve got a Blackmagic Cinema Camera, so no autofocus, same battery issues I’m familiar with. Could I get your opinion, today, if you had the choice between the R5C and R5 II for the same project, wanting to shoot in 4K RAW, which camera would you choose? Thanks in advance for your feedback 🙏 I’m curious to hear your thoughts! 🙂 (I'm still hesitating about getting cinema lenses, but I think for practicality reasons, mainly due to the trek and mountaineering, I'll go with zooms: RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1L, RF 24-70mm f/2.8L, RF 15-35mm f/2.8L.)
@yankfrАй бұрын
Just a quick question, did you use screw-on polarizers or drop-in filters? 😗
@DanielErnstАй бұрын
thanks so much 🙌 really appreciate it! I currently had the chance to test the R5II and it's a beast. The video features are pretty much the same as the R5C (expect the 4k60 downsampling) + Clog 2 and no waiting time between photo and video switching. And it's not that power hungry as the R5C. If you didn't make your decision yet I would go for the R5II if you're shooting video and photo at the same time with just one camera. If you're more video focused, get the R5C or even better the C80. I used a screw on VND/CPL Filter from Haida. Love this thing - 1/3 of the price from Polarpro!
@yankfrАй бұрын
@@DanielErnst Thank you for your feedback 🙏 I think I'll stick with the R5C, even though I'm a montainer photographer before a videographer... In my freelance/corporate work, I use a fully manual Blackmagic camera with cine lens, so I struggle to find the same "organic" image quality in video, except perhaps with the R5C, which feels more natural than the others. In any case, I’m waiting a bit before making my decision, just in case Canon decides to release an R5C II after the R5 II, although I don’t really believe it. I have time before my project at the end of next year, so that gives me time to think about my choice between the cameras 🙂 This is coming from a guy who’s been doing photography with Nikon for over 20 years 😂 The setup is driving me crazy because I have friends who are Sony ambassadors urging me to get the FX3, but watching your film, you took me on a journey, and I found it so beautiful. I feel like Canon seems more natural than Sony, maybe I’m wrong… I’m aware that there’s also the grading and other factors, but it’s not just that.. the more I watch videos made with the R5C, the more I’m falling in love with this camera. Your video is my ultimate reference, but maybe I’m biased because of the cold, snow, and mountains 😍 Honestly, I hope I can get close to what you’ve achieved; it’s truly impressive, and it would be incredible. Mine will be in the Arctic, a small project, but we have high hopes of achieving great results. I’m working hard on it, in any case. For filters, I like polarpro, but they’re very/too expensive; I use Nisi for that and am always satisfied (Haida is very good also 👌) I’ve planned on VND/CPL filters for future RF lenses. Thanks again for your response, and I never get tired of watching your film. Congratulations again on this outstanding work 👏
