What I appreciate most about your videos is the joy you put into making them. You can see that you enjoy every image, like a little child. I think that is the true essence of a wildlife photographer. Just watching your videos makes you want to grab your camera and go out into the field. Thank you very much Duade.

Duane, I can see that ear-to-ear smile that says it all. The camera seemed to meet your expectations and requirements; that means all the camera changes have been good for birding. I know some are saying it’s a lot of money, but I went out with a freelance photographer, and his gear with camera and lenses were pretty much all he needed our outdoors wildlife outing, but he never complained about costs. He said the rewards are what makes his life feel complete. I guess that says every hobby or career comes with a cost, but it doesn’t mean that it shouldn’t cost you to smile or laugh as you make the shots for yourself. ❤

What a wonderful and inspirational mood you make, just by showing how you work. Much more important than all the new cameras in the world. Showing how you work, makes us remember what we have to do. Get down low. Enjoy the session. Be patient and wait for the animals to come towards you. I really enjoyed this video, so please put some of this in all the videos you make. Greetings

sounds like great combo! had much time to tinker with the Eye Control AF? curious how it does in the field with longer tele lenses & switching subjects; mixed reviews on it so far, for some it sounds like it just doesn't work well, and others seem to really love it. TIA

Duade, i love the humility of your videos and the calm and enjoyable feel of them whilst maintaining technical details. A very refreshing alternative to other KZbinrs. An excellent example of how despite you being yet another person talking about the same subject, you as a unique individual with your own viewpoint, give it value.

I need to mention how rare the Hooded Plovers are, only a few hundred left in the wild. There are groups who monitor every bird and will rope off nesting sites and have volunteers on site to ensure passers by keeping their dogs on a lead. I have been fortunate photographing them from Apollo Bay, Ocean Grove, Wonthaggi down to the Prom. Lucky you

A great fun 1st session. I've had mine for a few days. And agree with you: AF faster, stickier. Pre-capture creates a new BIF dimension for me: The launch. Perched bird, precapture catches him as he launches. Almost foolproof.

So glad you mentioned the lock up and the busy (bug). I've had both happen on the R5 II a couple of times in the first week of use. Haven't seen any mentions of it online at all, even though I've searched for it. This happened with the first R5 as well, but went away in short order with some firmware upgrade fixes. Kind of glad to hear it's not just my camera; I was worried it was a one off and I'd need to send it back. Been really enjoying the new features of this camera, especially the pre-capture and the faster read out. Actually shot some hummingbirds in electronic shutter! This would be a waste of time with the first R5. Thank you for your videos. Your efforts to make us feel like we are along for the session is working!

I have one R5 currently. I'm considering getting a used R5 now that there are people selling theirs to upgrade to the R5 II, so that I have a second body. Then I could have my 100-500 on one of them, and a different lens on the other (such as my 28-70 F/2), and won't have to mess around switching lenses.

Fantastic video Duade, it's great to see you back in the field with a giant smile! I was lucky enough to be able to pick up the R5 II before I left for a trip to Scotland. While not the best season for birds there, I was able to get my feet wet using the camera during a non-birding-oriented holiday. Compared to my R6, my biggest take was how snappy the animal/bird detection and tracking was. In good to fair conditions you could have an out-of-focus blob flying around the sky and the moment you hit focus, the camera would snap on to that bird. With brushy or rocky backgrounds and surroundings it did find some sticks and pebbles that it thought were birds, but the combination of dual back-button autofocus and focus-recall settings I was using made quick work finding the correct subject. I second your statement for having an adjustable pre-capture time limit. Going through 10-15 extra photos took a lot of extra time but the keeper rate was great! I ultimately took fewer photos during my sessions than what you did for this video, but I didn't come across any shut-down or brick issues - yet. One battery was sufficient enough for each of the outings I managed to fit in, but none of them were all day affairs so I think a backup or 2 will be useful for the future. Side note - the RF200-800 is a great lens for shorebirds! I've had an absolute blast during my sessions photographing them, and I look forward to using this new combo in the future. -Danylo

Thanks, Duade. I've had my camera since August 20th. So far, I'm pretty happy with it. The issues that I've run into are my fault. I didn't bring over some of the settings from the R5. Tough to remember them all. I think I'm all set up now. I've taken some beautiful hummingbird photos using ES at 1/3200 and 1/4000. No rolling shutter. The wings look great. The editing software needs to catch up for everyone but it will. I'm very satisfied with my choice to upgrade.

Thanks for the video Duade. Glad you were able to get down to Flinders with the R5II, what a lovely spot and some great results from the new camera. It seems like (same as any new camera these days) there are one or two launch bugs that will need to be sorted out by firmware updates before long. But otherwise what a great camera. I've only just managed to get hold of a 200-800 here in the UK (brilliant lens, really pleased with it) so it's going to be quite a while before I can stretch to the R5II. Look forward to seeing your full review in due course. Thanks again and keep up the good work. John

Hi Duade, lovely vid and good to see you using that lens as I just picked it up and was worried if I'd be disappointed. It's pretty fantastic for video with the R5C. I think you'd like that cam. It'll let you shoot in 3k RAW crop 120fps which can be fab for long range stuff. Honestly, I'm preferring these natural type birding (photo) videos lately, it reminds me of how I head out myself just seeing what's out there to be photographed. I got some Sanderlings here in Ireland lately in a similar style to how you shot here.

Amazing video as usual Duade...Great captures with this combo...I just feel that Canon has done a coommendable job with R5 mk.2 and have improved with precapture and other features, and issues which you faced with R5. I really can't believe that we are getting a creamy and smooth Bokeh at F/9 with 200-800 mm. Love these in the field videos, fantastic to see you in your happy place. Another good lesson for me is that stopping down can still look really nice, I was surprised at how shallow the DOF was even at f9, especially on the super low and close stuff. I shoot at f4 to much of the time and often wish I would have stopped down when I get back and look at the images. Thanks for all you do! Keep em coming! :)

Once again, I enjoyed Mr Paton's experience of shooting birds with his new camera. As a Chinese bird photography enthusiast, I have been following you for a long time. I have bought the R5II for nearly 3 weeks. China is currently in late summer and early autumn, and the weather is still relatively hot and turbulence has a greater impact. My biggest experience with this new camera is that the focus and tracking performance have been greatly improved (compared to the R5), especially for tracking high-speed flying birds (swifts). However, its high-sensitivity performance is somewhat insufficient compared to the R5. I personally feel that the image quality drops significantly when it exceeds ISO2000. (The R5 can reach 5000-6000). In addition, the overall image quality seems a bit dry, and it seems that it does not have the quality of a full-frame camera, but it is a bit close to the R7. I usually use EF600F4II+2x or RF200-800 to shoot birds, especially birds of prey. I wonder if Mr Paton has the above feelings? Thank you for your wonderful sharing. I wish you good health! (PS: I am a cardiothoracic surgeon)

Duade, great video, thank you! I response to your issue of the AF jumping off the bird onto rocks, you might want to play around with AF menu 3 of 7 and set to Case Manual and turn down the tracking sensitivity and accel/decel tracking. It's great to see you out & about. I have the R5ii & I've used it a few times this week. I've found it to be a far better body than the original R5 (still have) & the recently sold R7. The only problem I see the dynamic range. A friend (CPS member) says to shoot for the shadows & recover the Hl's in post (2 stops easy). The Pro-continuous is far better than the R7 by a long way. Overall, I'm happy with the shots I've posted this week of birds in flight (& bee's).

Thank you Duade. I have been waiting for your and Jan's reviews and I am expecting mine in 3-5 days time. The R5 will go, despite being an excellent camera 90%+ of the Tim, I have had problems with focussing, especially focus jumping between subjects and I think the R5 II will be better, plus shooting sport I suffer from rolling shutter, critical for football and tennis - I know I can use the mechanical shutter, but am looking forward to using electronic and of course the pre capture - great for things like ice hockey. I have played around with the new features like precapture & frame boost, focus recall & to be honest as critical as l am of Canon & all brands this for me is near perfect & better than what l had hoped for. We complain about a price increase yet how many cameras have pupil controlled autofocus though it may not work for all l find it quite good & l wear glasses.

Duade, great video, got my R5MK2, but it was not a good weekend to try things out. I enjoyed watching you and it helped to lighten my mood. Still on the fence if I want a 200-800 to maybe 400 f2.8. I think the zoom is more useful, but I think the 400 may be higher quality photos. I'm going to see if Canon has them in stock as a CPS member and try to get them both to try out. That should tell me more. One of the photographers I watch was saying he had trouble keeping the menu settings. Not sure if you are seeing that. It wasn't all of them., but some he would set and go back and they were at the default again. Good to hear about the issue you had, I hope they release a new firmware to fix problems soon.

Great video Duade! If you run out of ideas for videos, I would be interested in seeing a video of the R5mkII paired with the Sigma 150-600C?

Great review! I would love to get a R5ii but really can't justify the expense. I live on Social Security and recently bought a R6ii and a RF100-500 a combo that I really love. I shoot BIF and would love the extra cropping ability of 45 mp, however I only shoot for social media, emails and a 8 1/2 x 11 calendar for friends and relatives every year, oh and an occasional entry in my clubs photo contest where they limit entries to jpg's and 1920x1200 pixels. I don't do any video and I really like the layout of the controls on the R6ii. I debated on the R5ii but felt that rather than an R5ii with EF glass I had for my 90D I would put the same money into the R6ii AND the RF 100-500. I have never regretted it however it doesn't stop me from wanting...

It's early yet, but just a request when you're ready for the in-depth review : could you check out whether the rolling shutter has improved with the stacked sensor, especially in electronic shutter mode, coz that's what wildlife photographers would prefer, it being silent. Thanks

I'm loving my R5 Mark ii for the same reasons you mentioned Duade. No issues with the camera so far and precapture has landed me some shots I would have missed otherwise. I thought it would be hard to significantly improve the R5 however the Mark ii delivers in spades.

Good to have you back Duade. I've waiting for your R5II review for quite long. How's your experience with Osmo Pocket 3 setup? I was planning to buy it for the same BTS purpose and great to see you've already done so. Cheers.

Pretty good so far apart from the memory card failing. The audio with the wireless mic seems very sensitive picking up a lot of background noise. But the camera itself and size seems to perform well. Cheers, Duade

Upgraded as well. Agree with the biggest improvements, AF and precapture. So far no odd behavior. Had issues where my R5 wouldn't always wake up reliably and I would need to turn off and on. Would also seem to lag at times, so far the mark ii hasn't exhibited any of these annoyances from the mark i. Still wonder if I would have been better served with a new lens, but when it comes to birding and moving subjects I am very happy with the improvements. I don't see any advantage over the mark i for anything else except maybe low light/high iso with electronic shutter.

@@Duade 🙏that would be nice Duade, but the original R5 saw its first sales (in Europe) only 2 full years after it started shipping. What's bugging me more is the current resale price for my R5: I was used resellers here normally take a 15% margin, which is fine. Now I see them selling used R5's with less than 20k clicks for $3300, but they only offer ~ $1300 for mine having 215k clicks, which is less then when I sold my R6 with 71k clicks. The R5 was rated at 500k clicks, and 80% were shot in ES, so it's not anywhere near being overused. Maybe currently there are too many hardly used R5's offered for sale due to people buying a hype camera rather than for living our common passion ??
@Duade
@Duade 16 күн бұрын
@@WernerBirdNature G'day, the clicks taken on the ES should have no influence on price whatsoever as that process is completely digital and does not wear out like a mechanical shutter. I would sell second hand yourself and just say 80% of shots taken on ES. $1300 seems far too low to me. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade Thanks a lot for this feedback Duade !! In my region it was extremely rare to find a second hand R5 the past years. I guess the big stores now just have no clue how easy they'll be able to sell the used R5's from all those now swapping for the R5ii. Shipment of the R5ii hasn't even started in Europe ..

Thank you for sharing this and all your wonderful videos. Really look forward to your work every time because it's real out there. Did you find Pre-capture easy to use? Hopefully one could simply turn it on and leave it on? I've used it occasionally with the R7 and have captured some moments impossible without it. But the R7 then is "busy" for several seconds ... so there's a serious trade off. Hopefully the R5ii is more usable.

Great Video. Great to see you crawling around on the beach. I am mostly a big animal shooter but occasionally dip into birds. I can see I need the pod thingy and dress to lie on the ground. Great to hear that 20fps/precapture does not run into the buffer often. Battery feedback too 👍I have tested mine a lot in my den (recovering from broken foot) and found it adequate for me but nice to hear from the field. Fredmiranda/stoness/fps/canon if you want to search.

I shot my R5 II for the first time the other day and my overall impression is very high. I tried the eye-control AF. It kinda worked but I'm not going to rely on it. I find the new menu a bit challenging, compared to previous Canon models. I'll get used to it. I shot some bees at HD/240. Interesting! I'll need a lot more practice on this thing, but I like it.
