I am now convinced that Canon has just released the best mirrorless hybrid on the market, ahead of Nikon and way ahead of any Sony device. I would suggest that people get and use the camera first, and after a reasonable amount of time, share their thoughts on the whole thing. I will be happily listening. The review by Jan Wegener (published today) after a few weeks in Australia making videos and photos of rare birds with the R5m2 is balanced and fair and gives a very good perspective on this amazing R5m2. Well done Canon!

This combined with the custom picture profile you can create for the camera to create images that need no processing on computer, means that you can offload the JPG files immediately as long as you get the final look in camera. This camera could potentially save you hours of post-processing time

First, I believe the AI upscaling is designed to be used in-place of the pixel-shift that isn't currently included in the R5 Mark II that was in the R5. Obviously, if you compare that feature to pixel-shift which you typically would use to capture a very limited number of photos it might make more sense. As for the JPG versus RAW, it may be more about processing power and time since the RAW files are significantly larger and would require more processing. The RAW structure as well may impose a penalty for processing that the JPG wouldn't. Second, the AI denoising I believe is utilizing additional image information in-camera that wouldn't be available once moved to Lightroom or another processing software. I believe I heard one of the Canon presentations allude to that. As you highlighted, this would be a painstaking process for a large shoot worth of images, but for a small number or even single image, then it makes more sense. Third, the AI updates to stay current. Not knowing exactly how they have implemented the AI and if it will require updates to make it stay current or not, my thoughts are if that is the case we will see firmware updates that are significantly weighted towards the AI update and little else. In some respects, it is no different than autofocus advancements and rolling those out in firmware as well. Obviously, these updates have to be capable of being leveraged utilizing the existing hardware so there will be practical limits that the hardware will impose at some point. Now, for me, I am not sure how important these features will be to me. But, I can tell you there are many features on the R5 I don't leverage today and so it doesn't offend me for the R5 II to have features I may or may not ultimately need but someone else may see as game changers. Certainly, for me many of the other updates are far more important in my decision to upgrade and these are maybe some extra decorations on the cake - I wouldn't even call them the icing. Thanks for the video!

I thought the same until Vanessa joy made a good point. For fashion and wedding photographers,and any high end photography they use social media to drop new content soon after the shoot for clients and followers. If you have a killer shot you just drop it in your timeline upscaled and denoised and it looks incredible without the post shoot workflow.

The point of the Inbody upscaling is to increase the immediate wow factor for a client. Not on 1000 pics but just a few prime shots.. Imagine you take a band photo, and quickly upscale it and clean up the noise and then transfer to your phone using the canon app. Within five minutes after a shoot the band has a huge super detailed and clean photo that they can all be pumped about while you work on the rest of the photos on your workstation. In the mean time they are all saying “dude these photos are gonna look sick” cause they saw an example on steroids haha. At least that’s what I figure.

you are totally right

Zoom works 15x in camera to examine detailed areas of a raw image. That should be effective to determine how much noise reduction can be applied assuming that there's some control over the AI processing.

Working in the conference photography business I’m willing to get cleaner images with this Ai. I do corporate 5k attendee conferences and the demand to get photos during the conference is very stressful. If you do conferences and major events, you’ll know low light is not your friend. Seems like you’re not picking here.

Vanessa Joy would use the AI Upscaling for her wedding clients. Canon listens to the pro. Go ask Vanessa.

It more likely means the output of the upres is JPG, not the starting point.

I originally thought that too, but it looks like upscale currently is only available to JPG images. Hopefully a firmware update can fix this. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day!

R5mk2 was a really popular camera during the Olympics in Paris, a lot of sport photographers use 5 series. I use R5 for sport. All the confusion you have is because you are not a person for that features and just dont understand other segments of the market.

The reason you're the only one talking about this on youtube is because everyone else knows this is a "fill up the feature list" feature. It's junk. No one will use it. It doesn't bother me that is there, because there are plenty of features in the camera that I will rarely use, and others I will never use. That's life. I focus on the features that I will use.

I wish Canon would just use Sony sensors like everyone else. Instead, they continue to have substandard dynamic range and noise.
@TomislavMoze3 ай бұрын
R5mk2 has the same noise and DR as A1 and slightly better than z8/z9 so not sure what are you talking about.

But then just use a camera (Sony or otherwise ) that has a sensor you like. Haha

The only real use case I see for a professional, is people who for one reason or another have to deliver files straight out of camera, with pristine metadata. There are some cases like news, forensics, and some technical documentation, where the client does not want to see "Photoshop" in the file metadata. They want the file straight out of the camera. I don't know if those clients would be ok with upscaling, but I don't imagine they'd have a problem with noise reduction. That's all I can come up with.

my point of view is it would better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Like 80% of the features and menu options on my current camera,I just use the ones I like and that help me and ignore the ones that do not. If I don't like what is on a TV channel, I move to another one. Same with features in my camera. I use them or I don't but I, by no means, think my needs and wants are universally applicable to other photographers. To each his/her own.

I think they needed to include something they could claim to be AI to jump on a catchphrase bandwagon. Of course, as tech and processing power continue to increase there may be a time when this will be rendered in real-time as you shoot and take the place of increases in megapixels. Moore's law will apply at some point to sensor and processor tech. They already use multiple processors in some bodies.

Worst possible timing to release this camera now when the AI hype is at its worst. They actually think AI-fantasy generated pixels can replace real-high-resolution mode 🤦🏻♂️
@iliaskapatos3 ай бұрын
I guess 90% of the R5MKII buyers won't be professionals, while maybe only 20% of the R1 users won't be this. Now, a non-professional buyer can be happy if he/she can clean with AI just some files, and they won't shoot in RAW. So, the R5MKII is not mainly made for professionals who will sell fotos, for that it is something useful for a lot of the buyers. Also, everyone without having Adobe Photoshop should benefit from that, as I guess in the DPP, this feature will probably also be added. So, AI makes sense for a lot of non-professional users.

I would argue for the professional sports photographers who shoot in JPG for live turnaround times some of these features are fantastic, don't confuse your niche as the only niche in "professional" photography
@JoshWilliams1233 ай бұрын
Canon realizes they are losing the camera wars. Since they can't compete with Sony's hardware specs they needed something to market that added perceived value and a differentiator to their professional cameras. If Canon executives or marketers think this feature is useful then they clearly are not in tune with this market.

Upscale and print. Forget that tedious post processing ritual. Spend more time on the beach. Shooting more pics. Less post sit down at the desk time.

I actually don't mind the idea behind upscale and print, I just can't figure out why its limited to JPG only, which forces you to shoot non-RAW. Hopefully there is s a firmware update for this. Thanks for the comment, have a great day!
