I traded my R5 for the R5 II due to the improved autofocus, and I'm very satisfied with my choice. The criticisms about the R5 II's dynamic range and low-light performance are largely exaggerated. Thank you for the review.

I had both R5 and the mk2 for about a month. Used the Mk2 as primary and the R5 as a second body during that time. I love my Mk2, main benefits for me is pre capture and E shutter speed > 1/8000 and 8k60 for slo mo wild life shots. I love the MK2 and just sold the R5 body after I was sure I was happy with it.

Great stuff here! After staying in DSLR-land for a couple of decades, I finally added an R6 Mk II to my bag earlier this year. I liked it so much that I finally sold my beloved 7D Mk II and Sigma 150-600 Sport, and have put that payment towards the purchase of an R5 Mk II, which I hope to get within the next couple of weeks. Really, really looking forward to it. Thanks for posting!

Phew!!! Thanks James. So glad to hear you have no regrets and that there seems to be little or no downsides compared to the original R5. I received my R5 Mark II only yesterday (along with a RF 50 f1.2 and RF 14-35). I’m still in the process of setting it up and getting used to the move from my trusty 5DIV to mirrorless. I debated long and hard about whether to go for the R5 MkII over the original R5 - mainly because of the (I suspect exaggerated) claims about poorer dynamic range etc., and whether this percevied ‘trade-off’ was worth it for the AF improvements (which was my primary reason for finally moving to mirrorless). So far though, I couldn’t be happier. It’s quite a step-up from the 5DIV! Some magnificent 'holiday snaps’ right there. Loving the edits and colour grading.

Thank you so much for watching! That's an amazing setup that you have upgraded to. I think you'll be very happy with the R5 II. That 50 1.2 is probably my favourite lens ever too. If you need any help/advice setting it up I'll be happy to help.

@@JamesReader Many thanks James. Appreciate it. I'm trying a few back button focus options at present, which I think will work. My plan is to get comfortable with these first, and then integrate a form of eye control AF; maybe as a third back button focus, or I think there's a option to use the 'Moving AF pt, start AF by eye control' on the back button that I have currently assigned to 'Metering and AF start'. I believe it would behave the same as the regular ''Metering and AF start' assignment if eye control is switched off (I'll toggle eye control off/on via another button, such as 'M-fn'). How have you integrated your eye control?

James, happy to see you are still alive and traveling 😅. Thank you for this great review. Brutally honest, easy to access, very very useful. You have a way of reviewing things as no one else does, I really like it. I've seen many R5 II reviews by now and they all seem more or less similar, yours stands out adding the experience over the spec reviews most others do. And the fact the Mark II still overheats in spite of the changes... I haven´t seen that before on a review either. Might have been the Santorini heat... ? It was worth the wait, this review!! My brother in law was trying to decide on the Mark II, I'll see him tomorrow, I believe your review will really help him decide. My regards to Rachel who's model performance made the video even more enjoyable. P.S.: We're back from Copenhagen since a few weeks and the R8+28mm f/2.8 combo did a great job again. I haven´t finished updating my photo site yet because my trusted 14 year old win7 HP laptop is slowly degrading, fan full of dirt. I launched myself on a Linux experiment, blog also on the site. Been busy with that... I want to secure my work environment to the new mini PC before I start picking apart the laptop for cleaning. And... I decided to still run Win10 as well because Canon, DxO et. al. don't make Linux versions...

Thank you for the kind words as alway Philippe! I hope you are well. The R5 Mark II actually caused me no overheating issues in Santorini, strangely it tends to overheat here in the UK when recording my talking head segments for KZbin. Glad to hear the 28mm setup is still working for you, it's so good for city exploration. Looking forward to seeing some of your shots when they are up on your website. same here! I follow the set up from a wildlife photographer for the triple button AF. It works damn well! I use my eye to quickly tell the camera which bird to focus on when there's a flock of birds. I’ve had the same issue with the display a few times, for me it happens more when I turn off and on the camera semi-frequently to save battery. It’s a bit annoying when shooting wildlife. I shoot in RAW, and in DaVinci Resolve, it's possible to change the ISO for RAW footage. Is there any point in shooting with the ISO set specifically to 4000? Autofocus handles still objects like portraits and landscapes with ease, but action sports require fast subject tracking, which is a different challenge. @JamesReaderАй бұрын
Thank you Rachel! I have had some overheating in long form videos. It’s a bit inconstant though because I have had instances where I have recorded for two hours with no issue. For any work where overheating is critical to avoid you can record in the 4k “non fine” mode. That won’t overheat. You can also buy a battery grip from Canon that includes a fan and that will cool the camera and extend record times. It’s called the CF-R20EP and is quite expensive. A cheaper alternative that works fairly well for me is that Smallrig sell a small fan that clips to the back of the camera very neatly and that helps reduce the cameras temperature. Hope that helped!

@@JamesReader Thank you!! This is super helpful. If the company is prepared to invest in the camera, it would make sense to also invest in the battery grip, as it could be essential for maximizing the camera’s performance and efficiency. Again, well done and appreciate your time. 👍

I wish I was on the sunny beach right now, with a beautiful girl and free from my day-to-day routine of a big city…

For the way YOU use the camera, the upgrade is irrelevant and pointless. This camera is better for fast action photography of wildlife and sports. You don't do that. No one will ever tell the difference in your photos from MarkI to MarkII. Guess you needed a GAS upgrade

Yeah I think I covered that. It was the video features I upgraded for. Very happy I did too, any photo improvements are just a bonus.
