Hi, I'm in the orange settings and when I try to use the back button customize section, I don't have the AF button to select on my dialfor eye checking. I don't have a couple of the options (I did scroll down and I didn't see them)

I like how you went through all the settings, but I think the title of this clip is a lil misleading. I mainly shoot people, weddings, portraits and adult images. These settings a aimed more for the wildlife, nature and landscape photography and not the settings that I would want shooting a wedding, or in a studio with lights.

His settings are great for all round photography but where it differ would be with events and portraits in regards to the AF / Metering / Eye Focus / Shutter Buttons. When shooting fast-moving events and portrait sessions, it can cause some setbacks. Outside of that, everything is solid.

Not aimed at landscape photography at all, Automatic eye tracking, AI Servo mode, electronic shutter 40 frames a second , Back button AF are all the preserve of Sport and Wildlife photographers, Landscape photographers only require very basic settings, would generally use mechanical shutter, and One shot mode, no need for back button AF altho that would be a personal choice.of the individual, He's basically set up the camera to specifically suit his type of photography, as he's primarily a wildlife photographe, these settings would also be useful for Sports photography, but not for Landscape photography.

This is a highly useful guide and I am going to make some changes. I have been having a great deal of difficulty since acquiring the R6ii and 100-500 Canon lens, specifically with birds in flight and even aircraft at air shows. I am either unable to grab focus or constantly losing it. I previously had a 7Dii w/ Canon 100-400ii, and I had none of these issues. It’s been so aggravating that I am concerned I made a big mistake moving to mirrorless. Any additional assistance is appreciated.

Excellent setup. Even when I change it, at least I understand why. I am coming from the Nikon menu system, so this was rather different. I call Nikon a "side-menu" and the Canon a "top-menu." I wish they had a way to save the settings to a card.

I'm trying to understand the "retract lens on power off" thing. Does the RF 35mm F1.8 extend automatically? I have an EF 24-70 that extends manually for zoom (also an EF 70-200). Will this lens be ok if I disable "retract lens on power off"? I'm guessing it's different because it dows not extend to focus, only to zoom, whereas the RF 35mm doesn't zoom. Great video, thanks!

Yes, it affects lenses where you don’t manually zoom, but the lens protrudes in an out by itself basically

Setting up my new R6M2 today -- my first mirrorless -- using your settings. Great video overall; thanks especially for explaining dual back-button focusing two and three times as you progress through the menus. Question about IS modes on the Canon 100-400 EF L ii lens, which I'll be using with dual back-button focusing as you suggest, with the R6M2 and EF-to-RF adapter: Which lens IS mode is best for hummingbirds moving erratically -- 2 or 3?

It does sometimes. It's actually very hard to turn off completely on the R6 II. I think the only way is to go to the custom buttons, then assign the button for spot AF, but don't just set it to AF- ON and instead, press, I think it's info, but could be another button), which then opens up a new sub menu that let's you configure everything what happens when you press that button. You may be able totally turn it off there, but not 100% sure.

I wondered why only a few of my photos were sharp, but most of my others were slightly blurry using the RF 100 - 400 lens. Quick question for you.. In photo mode, I want to be able to just press the record button and record video. I was told this will default to the video settings that are saved in move mode, in C3. So, I flip the camera to movie mode, set the exposure the way I want for video and save in c3. Great. Then, back to photo-mode and off I go taking photos. When I press the record button, it starts shooting video, but its not at all the settings I saved. Its in some type of auto mode? Its weird. How can I fix this?

Ah! Okay, well that would explain it then. I guess on the R6 II it's less of an issue (now that I think about it) as there is a dedicated button to switch over, so I guess I could just get the video settings the way I want first, in that mode, switch to photo, shoot etc.. then, its just a matter of flipping the switch to switch over and start recording. Still pretty fast.@@jan_wegener

Thanks for this! I'm a bit late to this party, but I've kept using my R7 for birds, but with the 200-800 I've moved to using my R6II and wanted to come up with advice on the AF modes. There's one notable difference in the setup I like: since (as you suggest) I don't use the record button in stills mode, I reassign the "dial func" menu (normally on the M-Fn button) to that button. Then the M-Fn button I set to the tracking toggle, which you have set to the DOF preview button. THEN I use the DOF preview as a panic button, in case something unexpected suddenly happens. This "panic button" mode switches to a different AF setup entirely, trying to pick up a subject in the entire field of view, and widening the acceptable exposure settings. Then if I'm busy trying to get a nice, careful shot of some nesting GBHs in one direction and I suddenly hear a bald eagle making a raid on the rookery, I can pivot, hit the panic button, and hope to grab something.

This is a video I needed. My whole life I had ancient cameras. Which I loved and proved it is not about the gear. Cost a lot of sweat and postprocessing to show that old cameras with a prime are more than competitive. 20D, 30D and last 10 years 5D Classic (2005 manufacture date). Two days ago I picked up R6ii and holy moly. Milions of features which do the job for you. Literally. 5Dc could only point with one cross type middle focus point and then you recomposed the frame. Slow fps. Limited DR etc. Now I feel like in startrek 😅

When i focus with the star for eye fokus the square is very big. I hade it on auto since i photograf both animals and people. My first language is french and I know it does'nt help but I'm certainly not the sole stranger to watch your videos and following you in your photo adventures. Back to this video, I needed to put it on pause every ten seconds or so and often rewind few seconds back to watch the sequence again to fully understand what you said or apply the modifications on my camera. It took me more than an hour and at some point I often taught of quitting and find another easier to follow video, but I finally get to the end. Please take this as a constructive comment 😊

Thanks for sharing this information. The video was indeed informative, and your speed through the settings was impressive. However, I can't help but feel a bit misled. Upon initially discovering your channel with the enticing thumbnail and title promising essential "settings" I supposedly "need" to know, I eagerly followed along with my new camera in hand. Yet, as you navigated through the menus and adjusted various settings, it became apparent that many of them weren't relevant to my style of photography-primarily focused on run-and-gun, travel, street, and documentary shots. Unlike those who capture birds and wildlife, which I only occasionally do on specific trips, my subjects include people, places, landscapes, food, and similar elements. It would be helpful if the video was upfront about its target audience, perhaps suggesting, "If you're into shooting birds, here are the essential settings you need to know." I ended up revisiting the video and undoing more than half of the recommended settings that didn't align with my needs. Despite this, thank you for your efforts and the valuable information provided-I did learn a lot. It's just essential to acknowledge that these settings might not be universally applicable-to everyone. Thanks again!

Thanks, @@jan_wegener - I do get that and have been playing and practicing these and other settings for the past week and I'm still not dialed, but I'm giving backbutton focus a whirl and playing with the cases and adjustments among other things. I appreciate your reply. Good luck and keep up the work! Cheers!

Hi Jan, I have been working with the Canon R6 mark 2 for almost a year now and have used almost all the settings according to your video. This also applies to the back-button focus. Never had any problems until recently. Recently, however, I noticed that my focus point moved while pressing the shutter button. This occurs in both H and H+ and both electronic and electrical 1 grd. When you look back at the photos you see the square of the AF spot shift to the right without the camera (or me) moving... Because I thought there was a malfunction, the camera was sent to the repair service of Canon "Tech Repair" via the supplier. I received the following, in my opinion strange conclusion. If I understand them correctly, back-button focus is the cause of the problem 😱??? What is your opinion about this? Thank you in advance. Below is the answer from Canon Repair The mentioned complaint its related to a setting, the camera its set to focus through the AF-ON button and this button its also set to detect objects. In order to avoid the focus to shift from the desired point, this button should be set to Metering and AF start The camera works according to specifications. EOS R6 MKII

What the camera tech is saying is that because you have eye tracking on AF on, it starts the eye AF and not the spot AF. But I believe that is not you issue, is it? You have eye AF on AF-on and spot AF on the star button right? And if you press neither of the buttons but the shutter button the AF moves?

@@jan_wegener That's right Jan. Exactly as you suggest in your video. Always worked great. Recently I noticed this after I determined the focus point using spot and then. press the shutter button on H or H+, the focus point moves to the right during recording. On my R7 it just stays at the same point as it should as long as the subject doesn't move.

@@jan_wegener That's right Jan, I just picked up my camera and discussed it with the seller. Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that there is indeed something wrong with the camera and that it appears to be IS/IBIS related. With the stabilization on the RF 100-500 set to "off", the problem of the AF point shifting to the right does not occur. With a demo R6 mark 2, the problem certainly does not occur with the same lens... In short, it really depends on the body/software and will have to be repaired. The supplier says he cannot do this and refers to Canon Tech Repair.... the customer can solve it himself so.... To be continued, but I don't think you are looking forward to that Jan. So it has nothing to do with the settings.

Great video Jan! I do have one question about the eye detection feature if you could please help!.... I just upgraded from the R6 to the R6 Mk2 and I can't seem set up the auto focus settings the way I had it on my R6. On my previous R6 I had my back AF-On button activate the eye detection tracking focusing on and off, allowing me to switch from spot focusing to eye detection focusing when needed. This was great when I was photographing a person walking towards me and I would need the focus to stay sharp on the subjects face! But now, I see that Canon has eliminated that eye tracking focus feature in the Auto-focus menu on the R6MK2. If i wanted to the set this up on my R6II, what customize focus setting should i set my AF-On button to? Is it (Start/Stop Whole area AF tracking) or (AF on detected subject) or (Eye detection AF) or (Eye detection)??? So many new options when all I want is to track the eye when i want it to! Please help!

Your videos for my R6MK2 and the R7 were excellent for both Bird and Sports action photography. But the best feature was the setup PDF guides allowing me to setup the cameras without going all thre the videos each time … the setup guides were well worth the small amount of money …. Well done

Does the Canon RF 800mm f/11 have the same focus zone limitation on the R6 II (as the R5 and R6 where you only get a tiny box), or is it like the R3, where you get to use most of the zone?

hi, Regarding focus bracketing, can it be saved to a separate folder? Or even better to have each sequence saved separately or with different names .. otherwise it is just hundreds of files, and you have no idea where one ends and the second starts .. does anybody know this, pls?

Hi Jan, thanks for the great video. Just want to confirm your worklow on the field. Please correct me if I am wrong. By default you have the AF set to (Spot focus, Servo, Eye detection-off, tracking-off, subject detection-animal). You set the focus point either using the joy stick or top-right corner of the screen. Hit the "*" button to acquire focus. Hit the "AF-ON" button to enable eye detection. Hit the front button to enable/disable tracking. The last 2 buttons not necessarily in the same order. This would really help understand your workflow. I own a R7 and would like to see if your workflow helps me improve my keeper rate. Thnx in advance👍
