I've gone from an R6 to an R6M2. A couple of minor improvements in the R6M2 which are pretty important to me are the electronic shutter sound option and the visible meters DURING shooting in video modes. I wish it had audio memo function ala the R5 and R3 but oh well. If I really need to have an audio memo I just turn on the video and record. But that's just me.

Great review Jan. Have been using the R6 Mark II since late February. My first full-frame camera (had previously been using EOS M5 and EOS 7D). As a serious hobbyist the R6 Mark II hits the sweet spot for price and functionality. I’ve been shooting landscapes and birds with it on lenses from 16mm to 600mm and it’s been great. AF is amazing in every respect. I have the battery grip and can shoot for 4 hours and still have 30% remaining in the two batteries. Rolling shutter is a problem with flying/panning birds, but otherwise is fine. I bought the R6m2 as a hybrid camera, but haven’t spent as much time shooting video as I planned. The HD high frame rate video looks good and I can manage without 4K much of the time. One feature I like is the auto focus-bracketing and in-camera focus stacking. The stacked JPEGs are great, though I still usually go through the process of stacking the RAW files in Photoshop (the in-camera stacking algorithm is better though!)

As someone who has been happily in DSLR-land for years now, I am somewhat surprised to find myself giving serious consideration to picking up an R6 Mk II. My 7D Mk II is brilliant with a 24-105, and my 1DX Mk II loves my 100-400. I still have my original 300D, 20 years old now, and also a 20D for more casual shooting. But given the affordable (ish) price point of the R62, and the fact that I could still use all of my Canon EF/EF-S lenses with the EF-RF adapter, I don't know; this really could be a consideration. Christmas is coming, after all…

Great review! The lower megapixels is actually appealing to me as a wedding photographer, where I'm shooting 1000+ images and storage becomes an issue. My online print service won't even let me upload 50 mp images anyway because the files are so big. Everything else as you say seems like a "no brainer!"

storagw is an issue? lol? SSDs are exrremely cheap and after deleting Bad Photos it takes not much space. on my R5 I Shoot 45mp files, 20 MB craw compressed. easy! and for cuatomers I Export 6000px Photos with about 1,5 MB / jpg file. you are doing something wrong in your Workflow

I've had the R6.since intro and thought the R6ii would be a big upgrade. Not so. Af is the same. R6ii has slightly better video specs and no re ordong time limit. If those aren't important then stay with the R6. I returned the ii.

The AF accuracy of the R6 has been improved with firmware 1.7.0. so I wonder if that's why you don't see any difference in AF performance anymore.

An insightful video. As a Nikon shooter, I’m always interested to see what else is out there. The one thing I don’t get is why all camera manufacturers don’t have at least one CF Express Type B card for being able to shoot a high number of shots and/or video. And they are much more robust.

Great review, Jan! I must say, I really hate the positioning of the on/off switch and video switch, I think it would be much better if they were positioned other way around. I realized when I was shooting hand held with big telephoto lens and wanted to quickly do some video I had to remove my left hand supporting the lens, take the camera down, away from my face, and switch to video, which is ridiculous. I really love video switch positioning in R3, which is the same as in every Canon in the last 15 years or so, and you're able to do it with single hand, by simple move of a thumb, very quickly, while holding the camera without need to move it and affect the balance, keeping your workflow easy and streamlined. Sometimes I wonder if people at Canon who come up with these changes even use cameras in real life scenarios.

If it is like the R5, when in stills mode, the red record button on the right side will jump to whatever video settings you save as custom function three. I find it very handy when I’m shooting a mix of video and stills for sports.

Very interesting video, it mentions some of the camera's limits. As an A7iv user desperate to get sharp pictures of subjects moving towards the camera under any circumstances, I would have liked to see a test including a low contrast subject moving fast towards the camera in low light.

Coming from m43 I decided to try the canon kool-aid and bought an R7 and started my RF lens collection. The R7 has been awesome and I would like to try a full frame body but I like to shoot flowers and portraits and make posters out of them so I feel like I don't want to step down on the megapixels. I will probably hold out for a R5 mark ii even if its a year or so off.

Strange that the pre burst mode doesnt just clear the buffer continuesly and produce standard raw files. If it only had to clear that last shot you could still take slower single shots instead of being completely blocked. Anyways a very good camera but I'll wait for the R5 mk2 if that ever comes out as it would be a bigger jump from my regular R6.

Great review! I pre-ordered one of these but ended up changing systems before it showed up so I canceled it. This is my hobby so sometimes I will change systems for my own amusement. I am currently shooting with the OM-1 and enjoying that. If I go back to Canon at some point I think I would buy the R6ii. I got tired of waiting for the R5ii and the R1. I still might choose the R6ii though. Seems like a sweet spot for features and performance for the price.

It knows more subjects than the R3 and can sometimes find them from further away. I guess that a function of it being more up to date than the R3, which hasn’t really received an AF update afaik. I think the R3 is overall still the better camera but the R6 II is newer which gives it more updated software at times it seems

Unless you need F2 for something specific, the 24-7- will be smaller and better to use in the field. The 28-70 is very heavy, big and needs a specific use case to be justified imo.

The image quality through the lens you are using in this video is incredible. What lenses are you using ? For Canon for birding photography which would you say is the best option for a camera? I am currently using Fuji but have owned and used Canon years ago (40D). I had back then a 300mm F4 L but I expect things have moved forward these days. Thinking of potentially switching either to Sony or Canon but I think Canon has more lenses for wildlife.

I think that the 1.8.0 firmware update for the original R6 I proved the auto focus significantly. I wonder how it compares to the mark Ii. Viewing the auto focus in this clip, it seemed similar to what I get With Mark I.

I have recently bought a Canon R6 mk2 and am disappointed to find that with my EF 24-70mm L f/4 lens the eye focus doesn't work whereas it works flawlessly with my EF 100-400mm L and my EF 100mm f/2.8 L macro lens. I have Googled but can't find anything anywhere stating that this is a known compatibility issue. Has anyone else noticed this? Could it be some setting that I need to change? I think that is unlikely though because it works with the other lenses. I am using the Canon EF-RF mount adapter (the plain one without a ring control)

At 10.11 on the video which is so helpful can you explain the settings that prevent the eye detect from jumping between different birds in the same frame? And similarly how do you set the eye auto focus to stay one bird and not another? I ask with reference to groups of actors or people at an event. You can set the number of subjects within the autofocus menus. I just got my R62 so I maybe doing a poor job at describing how it works.

Thanks for this great review! It seems like the R6 Mark II is a really good camera. But I miss a couple things. More MP for cropping. The headup display, which I often use. The display of the "old" R5 is better than that of the R6 Mark II. Why 2 SD card slots? I would prefre to have 2 CF Exprex card slots. Sure, the R6 Mark II has options that I would also like to have in my R5. For example Pre-Burst or RAW-Burst as Canon calls it. I was hoping that with the firmware update the R5 will have the pre-burst feature. But what the firmware 1.8.1 has to offer is more of a bad joke. At least for me. Maybe there are some photographers who will use the IBIS High resolution shot. Which ultimately can only be used if nothing, absolutely nothing, is moving. I'm wondering about the usefulness of this feature, which only works in JPG format. I have canon r7 and are not happy with it's autofocus and tracking/eyedetection. I am considering to sell it and buy the r5. After looking at youtube (at dogphotographer) my impression is that it has very god autofocus and tracking/eyedetection. I am also considering r6mk2 but I would like more resolution. Jan, why do you recommend not using digital extender? Is it just the reduced resolution? I would be temped to use APS C mode, that would give me about an 9.4 megapixel image, that would adequate for me. Buy a 24-70mm would give me 24-112mm without any lessening of narrow dof, just by switching mode.

Hello sir, im planning on getting a camera and contemplating between r5 , r6 , r6 ii , and in sony im sided with a7iii / a7iv seconds if it fits my budget and im all the more perplexed because of the variety of lens choices in sony. Depends what you want to photograph, but 24-105 is an excellent Allrounder There’s also some cheap stm prime lenses available like the 35/1.8

I’ve been using the 80d with ef 7-200 and 100-200 Lii lenses and I see they work well with an adapter on the r6 but I also use the sigma contemporary lens for wildlife and air shows, do you know if this lens works with the r6 or R6ii? Especially the eye tracking? I love my 80d but it’s not great in low light so time for an upgrade but I’d like to continue using my sigma 600mm

They will work, but there are some AF issues with third party lenses on the RF cameras, but overall it should work fine, probably better than on the 80D

Potential Dealbreaker Warning !!!! R6 MKII - Card Recording not supported with clean HDMI out :( Canon has done it again. removed a basic feature that existed for 15 years since in the 5D MKIII that (with MagicLantern) that seems to be still the only Canon camera that can Livestream and Record internally (as backup) a long video session like the full day conference that im streaming at the moment without stopping every 29:59. i havnt checked the R7 R10 R50 R3 R8 yet, but i have the feeling that this is the case on most if not all new - continuously recording canon hybrid cameras. i am completely bewildered by this move and very dissapointed to say the least. I am giving up on the hope for a proper all rounder from canon at this point. just don't trust them anymore. im also quite surprised that nowhere is this mentioned in all the many reviews praising this camera. maybe no one streams multicam with Canon cameras, but if you are - be aware. 📸💥🔨

I am looking for a good instructional book for my R6 Mark ii and can't find one. But there is book for Canon EOS R6 ii. Are there two differed cameras? or the Word "Mark" is just I don't know....

I can't understand why people want to upgrade their gear so often. My camera is seven years old and because I only use electronic shutter it should easily last me ten years or so - and I shoot around 200k images per year. I wonder how many pics per day the people that upgrade whenever a new camera is released take?

It depends all what you want and what you shoot. Do I personally buy gear for KZbin and just because it’s fun, sure. But it’s a business for me as well, so it’s different. My 5D cameras I sold when going to mirrorless had over 400k photos taken each. Now on the mirrorless with the faste frame rates it would be a lot more

Thanks for the review. I’m currently using the Nikon z6 and depending on what Nikon releases or don't release I might be moving brands so do you think this would be a good choice? I shoot birds, Wildlife, and sports, both motor and people along with landscapes. from what see the autofocus is much better than what nikon has except for the Z9 which is out of my price range. The C-RAW file actually looked like the camera added a little sharpening. That would mean less sharpening needed in post. Do you shoot in C-RAW with the R5 too? Or does the sharpened look come from DXO PureRaw? The R6 II looks like a great body for those who don't already have an R5. I'm waiting for those rumored R5 firmware updates to roll out. An R5 II next year would be great! I'd trade my R6 in and have two R5s.

No Pure RAW in those examples. I shoot cRAW with R5, too. Same reason, because I get almost double the buffer size.

I use R5 craw, absolutely no difference compared to Normal raw @100% zoom pixelpeeping. craw isnt sharper than normal on r5

@@jan_wegener I travel in the tropics, in low light, humid conditions. I shoot mammals and birds, large and small. I could afford another R5, and considered an R7, but low light may be a problem.

@@aprilcampbell1244 the R7 is not bad, but AF is not as good as R5 and it’s more trouble in low light. R6 II is great in low light Do you want it just as backup or use both bodies? That would heavily influence my decision

I have the Mk2 I also enjoy using it. When the camera recognises the subject it works like a dream. Unfortunately there are many occasions when the camera stumbles to recognise the subject Hence many YTubers are so effusive with the AF but I suspect the praise is a little exaggerated

That's why you have to use double back button AF. If you use it right you can make it quite easily focus on anything

That would be amazing but it's not true unfortunately. On Canon's website it says 12-bit A/D conversion with electronic shutter, while 14-bit with mechanical and electronic 1st courtain. So regardless of speed, if es is used it's always 12bit.

Manufactures have to invent something else. The EVF lag of mirrorless cameras makes it inappropriate for speed photography. I have tested it; OVF is far superior in this genre.
