Bought the R7 at launch, bought a few of the primes and then bought the 24-70 because it was on sale and there was a cashback on top.. been having lots of fun with that combo.. it is my preferred walk around setup at the moment. The only letdown is that it is not as usable for indoors product photography as I'd like. The RF 35 should also get an honorable mention being that it is essentially a 50mm with IS on the R7 which is unheard of for full frame plus that thing is sharp.

If you can light the products well, then the R7 is fantastic for product photography, but if you want a low light king then the R6 II. I have both for a reason. They are excellent.

I have the R6ii and the R7 to double my lenses. I have kept all my EF lenses and use the EF to RF adapter with the filters. I can easily swap lenses from 14mm to 24-70 for example and have full use of a ND filter in the adapter. Its the best thing since sliced bread, being able to just swap out lenses and have ND or PL already available to use. And with the full frame and crop keeping the max apertures on your lenses just by swapping bodies. Its the best....................highly recommend.

Been using the R7 since it came out and use the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II on it. Just got the Sigma RF-S 18-50mm f/2.8. It's the size of the original kit lens but as sharp as the 24-70mm - and much lighter! A great walk-around lens. Also have the RF 85mm f/2 Macro and the EF 200mm f/2.8L II with 1.4x TC for an effective 448mm on the R7. I'm hoping for a stacked sensor R7 mark II for low light.

The just-released RF-S 18-50mm Sigma is the first Canon -licensed 3rd party AF lens. Its manual focus ring is actually an unlabeled Focus/Control ring. You set its function in the camera's setup menu on the last page of the AF tab.

Awesome demonstration of these two wonderful cameras. I just picked up an R6 MKII and it doesn’t disappoint for what I do. What I really enjoy about the R62 is I can adapt my EF & my EF-S lenses. The crop is automatic for the EF-S Canon lenses. I have all the STM EF-S and EF STM which all function amazingly on the R62. I get the benefits of full frame RF glass and the duality of EF/EF-S functionality out of the R62 when adapted. I use the drop in variable ND filter adapter.

Instead of having both FF and aps-c, i have R7 with speedbooster and normal ef/rf-adapter. Both are great with ef-lenses (like ef16-35Lis2 and ef50/1.2L). This has made my 6Dmk2 obsolete. Only rf-lenses i have are rf-s10-18 and rf100-500L. Both for wild life. The latter is a stunning beast.

Right now both cameras do oversampling giving excellent sharpness. The r7 oversamples from a 7k image where the r6 II oversamples from a 6k image to 4k. If you crop into the R6 II you are losing that oversampled image and the detail is not as defined. Let me know if that helps answer your question.

Great review and definitely not what I expected when I clicked in. I was fully expecting a comparison of AF, IBIS, MP and all that stuff. Your take is very intriguing. I'm weighing buying "a" new body, and depending on my choice, I may swap out a pretty significant investment in lenses. I'd been looking at it from FF vs crop vs MFT. Your perspective on having multiple bodies (FF and crop) is interesting. I'll want to do the price math on that, but it almost seems like one could have one or two fewer lenses in the bag if you did a body swap instead of having a lens for every occasion fitted to whatever sensor you have. Especially helpful to me was your consideration of "look" and bokeh comparing focal length and crop factor! Nice insight!

Thank you for the comment! Once you think of your camera's as tools you can start organizing them in your workflow as a tool. The Full Frame 35mm serves a purpose and so does the APS-C and even The Micro 4/3. Counting my Mavic 3 Pro I have all three of those sensors in my workflow and they all work perfectly for what I use them for. I have been on a F4 Lens kick over 2.8 and I think that will be a video in the not so distant future.

The sensor size has nothing to do with the f-stop setting required. It is like saying you need to drop the f-stop when cropping because you use less light. Not true. Dynamic range is the ability of a single pixel sensor to measure from dark to light. It does not know how big the sensor is. These sensors on the R7 is just smaller than on the R6. They are the same size as you would have had at 82mp on a full frame. So tell the FF crowd that high rez sensors have less DR than low rez units and watch the fun reactions- same thing. I fully agree with the statement of using the R7 as a tool for reach within the RF eco system . That is what it is meant for. It is not an entry level thing.

Good glass is the great equalizer, why when becoming joined at the lens mount to Canon in 2004 with an 8MP 20D I also purchased the 24-70mm 2.8 L and 70-200mm 2.8 L IS along with the very good 10-20mm EF-S. Because of the IQ of the lenses I didn’t upgrade my DSLR past the 15MP 50D because with skilled post processing the combination of IQ was more than adequate for sharing photos on-line and making prints up to 16 x 20 and even larger, depending on the subject. Starting in 2012 when I got a iPad with 1080p camera and iMovie I started shooting and posting videos and realized I was getting more and better feedback from them than I ever had posting stills on web pages. I started using my DSLR gear less because shooting and editing video on phone/tablet was far more convenient. What motivated me to buy a new mirrorless camera this year was a new interest in shooting wildlife and a desire to up my video game. I debated between the R7 and R6mkII, opting for the latter with a RF 100-500mm because I thought it the better platform for video over the long term. For everything else other than wildlife (studio portraits, events with dual 580ex flash) my 15MP 50D is still adequate for my needs.

@@JaredHoyman I forgot to add in my first comment that my primary motivation for upgrading to R6mkII was the order of magnitude improvement in AF and exposure control it has compared to DSLRs. My first hint at the potential of mirrorless was the Minolta D7Hi I bought in 2001 as “bridge” while waiting for digital DSLRs to mature and the features of the pro bodies to “trickle down” to the prosumer level. In that respect the R6mkII ticked off all the boxes of things I wanted more than the R7 did.

Hey Jared! I'm coming from a Canon T8i with an EF 70-200mm IS II USM, EF 28mm, and EFS 18-55mm. I'm having a hard time deciding because I'm torn between the R6MK2 and the R7. I love the space of the R6MK2 as a full-frame, but I'd like your opinion based on the equipment I have. I'm doing a mix bag of photography right now, mostly sports but looking to get back into portraits, but no videography. I have no problem with buying an adapter if needed. This would be my first major upgrade and while my budget is tight I have no fear waiting a bit longer and save up if needed. What are your thoughts?
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 9 ай бұрын
The R7 and R6II are both amazing cameras and that is why I own both. R7 would give you extra reach for sports. The R6 II would give you a cleaner picture with less noise in lower light areas like indoor settings. I like the look of Fullframe for that shallow depth of field in portraits and some landscape. I use the R7 with the 24-70 2.8 RF at 24mm with all my talking head studio video shots because I like that look. I guess buy both ;). This probably wasn't that helpfull, but you really can't go wrong with either camera. I will tell you once I went from the canon t2i in 2012 to the Canon 6D full frame its hard to ever go back to aps-c crop sensors for your photos. There is just a special look that full frame give you.

For your first camera either of these will be amazing. I don’t know. It’s not a great time sure, but on the other hand, it’s a convenient time to get extended family photos as many relatives may show up from far away, they are usually dressed nice and may not see each other again for some time. They’ll probably want group/ family photos and it’s also a good opportunity for candid/ emotional shots, which many people appreciate later. The two times families get together are weddings and funerals and the marriage rate is dropping like a rock so funerals it is. Just a thought.

Before watching this video, I had previously seen your video titled "Canon R6 Mark II Unboxing and Unexpected Discovery". I have owned an R6 Mark II since early December 2022. The photo bag is the only antidote to that damn irritating sound of stabilization rattling in this camera model. Unfortunately, at the time when I was buying this camera model, I also bought myself the first photographic backpack in many years to relieve my spine, and I was unpleasantly surprised. This model of the camera with the lens attached to it cannot be carried in a backpack, i.e. when the camera is closer to the head and is usually directed with the lens downwards. Just go to a place where there is no urban bustle, and with every step you take, you will hear a single rattle of stabilization. You usually carry a photo bag around your hips or move it on your back (i.e. it is very far from your ears), thanks to which this problem is, as they say, "survivable".

Very interesting stuff, and much food for thought here. I guess I'm following your suggestion to have full-frame and APS-C bodies, since I've got my beloved 1DX Mk III and 7D Mk II. Not only do I not plan to get rid of those DSLRs, I'll probably be buried with them, along with my 20D and a 20-year-old 300D. I had been giving serious thought to adding the R6 Mk II to my kit after the first of the year, but now I need to rejigger my thinking. Perhaps the R7 is a better fit, not to mention quite a bit less expensive than the 6.2. (I could conceivably get both, but I'm happily married and would prefer to stay that way. 🤣) With the exception of an old Tokina 19-35 and a Sigma 150-600 Contemporary that I'll be getting for Christmas, all of my glass is Canon EF or EF-S. I've already looked into how a Canon lens would work on an R-series body using both the EF > RF adapter and a 1.4x teleconverter, and from what I understand, it would work quite well albeit with losing one stop. So, maybe the R7 is a better idea after all. Thanks for posting this!

Small detailed items may require the 100mm 2.8 RF MACRO L. General purpose you could use the 24-105 f4 RF. Hi Gerard .. what a great comparison video. We're always told aFF is better than a cropped sensor, but you've really convinced me of making an important choice. It's a case of what you like to photograph most. It would be great to have both, but with my budget I'm only allowed one. The grave yard with snow was a great choice of location. With the extra light the snow gives it worked so well. I did notice a very slight enhanced blow out on the R7 than on the R62, but that didn't detract from what you were demonstrating. The price difference between these cameras makes a big difference also. However, Canon, as always, has thrown into the mix the R8. Being FF that's very interesting addition. Can you advise on IBIS. Do you think that it is really necessary as it's not on the new R8? Cheers Richard.

IBIS is great if you use it on a lens the doesn't have IS, but isn't that much more noticeable with a lens that has IS. If you use lenses that have IS then you probably will be fine with that compromise. That being said the IS on the R7 is excellent.

For me, too much about video, which I rarely use. I nature and landscape mostly. Also, a thousand bucks difference in price is a big factor. Coming from EOS T7i.

A thousand dollars is a lot of money, but it is a HUGE difference going from a T7i crop to a professional full frame camera. I switched 12yrs ago from the t2i to the 6D and have had full frame in my bag since. It produces amazing images. That being said. My R7 produces great images too, just a different look.

It's the pixel density that determines reach, not crop factor.
@JaredHoyman
@JaredHoyman 7 ай бұрын
Pixel density determines how much detail you can retain by cropping in. Sensor size determines reach based on the exact same lens on different sensor sizes. Crop sensor is 1.6x that of 35mm full frame regardless of pixels on the sensor.

@@JaredHoyman I should correct myself: reach is determined solely by focal length, not crop factor. But given that, the usually higher pixel density of the crop sensor gives us more to see, as if to reach farther :)

You'll love it! Its a year later and I can't find any reason to sell it. It just works so well and makes an excellent video camera.

I came here to compare the performance of the cameras and really bummed that this is a 14:00 visual explanation of APS-C vs. full frame. I hope you'll consider making a video of how the sensors perform, build quality/size, photo/video usage and the pros and cons of the camera besides the crop factor of the lens.

This is one video of many in a series I made on the cameras. You can go back and see each one of them and how they perform. The videos go back to June 2022.

I guess I'm just disappointed with the title. 'R7 vs r6mk2: Aps-c vs full frame crop ratio comparison' would make more sense. I kept waiting for more info like the title and description lead me to believe.

@LimTong this is a lesson for me. I forget people come in for the first time and may not have seen the previous videos. I'll do my best to reference previous relevant videos in the beginning of my vids.
