Thank you so much for reviewing this lens with the R7. Everyone else is showing the Mark 2 version of the lens, which is by accounts better. But I have the old one, which I'd used on my old 7D and use currently on my 7D Mark II. It's great to see that this old lens can still shine on the new mirrorless R series cameras in general and on the R7 in particular! It's great to know that one can still get good results with the older version of the EF 100-400!

Jeff - I go back and forth between Canon and Nikon. The version one is not perfect by any means but no lens/camera set up it. It works and works flawlessly. There is not as high a keeper rate as with the RF100-500 but I really like to say - how many great photos do you need? I go out to have fun and sometimes just pull one of two and dump the rest. I just want to have fun. I will also say since I do go between Nikon and Canon,.... ALL of Canons old lenses work perfectly on the new camera bodies. I can not say that about Nikon. Even the old extenders just work - cant bear it. Modern EVF with all info at your eye, amazing tracking ..... and it just works. I absolutely have enjoyed it. The only lens I have NOT liked it the new RF version of the 100-400. I wont say it was crap, but it is not as good in my opinion as the original EF 100-400 that you and I have. 🙏❤🤗
@jeffgaboury3157 Жыл бұрын
@@JonnyPink65 Thank you. The 100-500 looks amazing, but very pricey. I've heard the EF 100-400 II works very well on R cameras and it's faster focusing, sharper and more reliable than the earlier one and they're available second-hand at attractive prices, so one of theme might be in my future. And it's backwards compatible with my 7D Mark II to boot, which I still love. But I don't know if I'll love it as much once I get spoiled by the R system's AF!!! LOL
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
@@jeffgaboury3157 I agree on all of it. If I did not already have version one, I would have bought the version two. But, I don't need both. That is one thing I like about the old lenses is that they are compatible with my older cameras - both Canon AND Nikon. And on Canon, the old lenses work perfectly. At some point I do plan on renting the version two but no a priority at the moment. ❤

Hi! Are you still using 7Dm2 and 100-400 m1? or do you use 100-400 m1 and R7? I myself love this combination of 7Dm2 + 100-400 m1. I'm thinking about buying an R7. There is no information about such a combination in the network. Thanks to John for giving us this information. I am interested in a question. As with a 32 megapixel camera there will be a resolution. A lot of pixels for such an old lens. And of course the focus speed.
@jeffgaboury3157 Жыл бұрын
@@bird-af Hi. I still use the 100-400 Mk1 and the 7D2 together. I've subsequently bought the R8, but my results were poor for moving subjects on the R8 with this lens. Mind you I was shooting at the 20fps burst and I just think that the lens couldn't focus fast enough to keep up with the AF system on the camera at that rate. I've subsequently shot a wedding using a slower burst with the 85mm f1.8, which is slower than the 100-400mk 1 and the results were surprisingly good in low light for people dancing. I think if you want to take full advantage of the R7 at 15 or 30fps, you'll probably want to go with the 100-400mk2 or the RF 100-400. But it might work fine if you don't use H+ burst rate. My suspicion is that the 100-400mk1, being from the film days when 7fps was "fast" just can't keep up with the blistering fast frame rates of the modern R series cameras. That's just a guess on my part though. I'd find the first shot would be in focus, but the moment the bird flew, the flying shot would be OOF. In the viewfinder, everything would "look" okay...the AF box was right on the bird, but when I looked at the results, the actual AF point would be behind the bird. It just seemed unable to keep up. I intend to try again at a slower frame rate. Best of luck if you try it. Please reply here with your results if you do!

Amazing to see this combination work, as the same sensor on the 90D has a lot of difficulty creating sharp images with the Mk 1.
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! One thing I have found about Canon is that thier old lenses just work with the new camera bodies. I had not trouble using this on the 90D. I think most let the ISO run too high and it kills the images with the crop sensor bodies including the R7... in my opinion. I shoot the new bodies like I did the old DSLRs with as low as an ISO that I can get away with. What I have found is that my favorite video camera is the 90D!!! 🙏🤗❤

Hey John, love your videos and photos. I have the R7, canon control ring adapter and the EF 100-400mm mk i lens. I hear the image stabilisation sound from the lens when i turn on the camera, however, the IS stips working after a while (I hear no sound, nor the lens moves) even when I hold thr autofocus button. The only way it turn back on again is when I turn off and turn on the IS button on lens, or when I move to gallery and come out of it. It works for a while and goes off again. Could you please share your experience with the IS on the lens.

Bill, I shoot old school with my ISO low - with this mega info sensor, it makes a HUGE difference. I only use Adobe Lightroom and it is funny you ask about that . I just finished a video tonight (it is cooking up on KZbin) about how I edit my photos. I LOVE the masks in the newest version of LR. I shoot in short bursts, pick the best, and then only edit the best of those. I only show the best and dump the other thousands of junk I shoot!!! If you do have questions and if can offer tips in any way, please let me know - you know how to get a hold of me!! 🙏❤🤗

@@JonnyPink65 John, thanks so much for the information! I’ll definitely be tuned in for your upcoming video on editing. I try to shoot below 3200 ISO, but I know even that level produces noise, especially with an APS sensor. I think my main problem shooting birds is the lens reach, or lack of; requiring a lot of cropping. That loses detail and adds noise too. I just need to break down and get a higher megapixel camera I guess. I know there are trade offs on that too, but small insects, birds, etc. usually always requires cropping. I use only Lightroom also. Again, thanks!🙏
@JonnyPink652 жыл бұрын
@@Eli4Bill Bill - I discovered with the R7 and the 90D, that I have to keep the ISO low like my old DSLRs. With the R5 it is no big deal at 3200 - 7000 - 12000, but the crop does have more noise at high ISO. And yes, a lens with more reach makes a big difference but at a low ISO with a high megapixel, you can still crop in for days!!! I crop just about everything. For macro, the ISO is always low and shutter is slow..... Have a safe new year! I will be sitting here at my computer recording music, editing photos...... and or drinking Scotch . 🤗

Thank you John for an awesome "review". I am still using a Rebel with my Mk 1 and was looking to upgrade camera and keep my lens for now. In your opinion what should I be doing first, my budget is very limited, 7D is relatively affordable here in South Africa now, Then the 90D and the R7 is a bit steep for now, I want to stick with the crop censor for wildlife...do you have more experience with these options and the Mk1?
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Well, advice I got as a new photographer and still give is to invest in glass or invest in great lens. A pro-level lens on an entry level camera body will give you better results that an entry or kit level lens on a pro level camera body. After that - the quality or character of the photos that you present come from you - your skill - your passion - your vision. If you have fun with the rebel, then keep shooting it and enjoy it - it really is a fantastic little camera. But it you are going to upgrade your camera body, I would suggest you keep saving for the R7. The reason I say that is the eye focus tracking is amazing. The higher ISO shots on the 90D and the R7 do get really noisy. Again, the Rebel is a great camera - take photos and just have fun with it!! 🙏🤗❤

reading lenses for a canon R7 camera, canon RF 100-400mm or canon EF 100-400mm, which is better in your opinion?
@JonnyPink6510 ай бұрын
Wow - that is a tough question. I think the new RF version is sharper and lighter..... and even less expensive that the original Vi EF 100-400. I have not shot the faster EF VII version but I believe that it is a beast of a lens and still has a hefty price. The best set up .... is the one in your hands!! They all have limitations and advantages. The lens I really like the most on the R7 is the RF 100-500. Even with a 1.4 extender on there, it is just so amazing. 🙏💖🤗

Hey john love your videos. I need a bit of help i am stuck between the EF 70-300 1:4-5,6 L IS USM and the 100-400mm L wich is the better option thank you
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out. I think it all depends on what you are shooting and what you are looking for in a lens. The 70-300 is an all around lens and will be versatile and fun. And the 100-400 - which one are you referring too? The EF V1, the EF V2 or the new RF version? The other thing I would ask is what camera body are you going to mount it on? And that takes me back to what are you shooting and what are you looking for in a set up? there is no prefect set up for everything. We all work around the limitations of what we have. For example, I LOVE shooting my 600 F4 for wildlife - the images are stunning, but ..... it is heavy and limiting - that is a disadvantage and I will often pick another lens to go out with. On thing I will say that I am a firm believer in. The gear is just a tool. The true magic of a photo comes from the passion of the person behind the camera. Not the answer you wanted I think but there is nothing better and you create the magic!! 🙏🤗💖

This lens Vs the rf 100-400 which is better for wildlife?
@JonnyPink65 Жыл бұрын
Well, like anything - it is all personal. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The RF is much lighter but also a bit slower - it is also way more affordable. The EF versions - i have the first version, is faster and a bit heavier. It is also way more expensive as it was a L lens or more the pro level lenses. As far as reach for wild life - they are both fantastic on the R7. They both work on the R5 as well but I personally dont think that 400mm is enough for wildlife. The minimum focus distance on each is about the same with a 10 cm advantage to the RF version!! Both are awesome - the choice is yours. If money is not an obstacle, my very favorite lens is the RF 100-500 - that is a BEAST of a lens for a little more. 🙏🤗💖
