Heather and I took our Canon EOS R7 camera and RF 100-500 lenses to a new location for us, Orlando Wetlands. Honestly, we were not expecting much but we were very pleasantly surprised! We ended up finding and photographing my species, Red-shouldered Hawks, Blue-headed vireo, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Black-bellied Whistling Ducks, Roseate Spoonbill, White Ibis, Glossy Ibis, Blue-winged teal, Palm Warber, Yellow-rumped Warbler, Wood Stork, American Coot, Great Egret, Little Blue Heron, Tricolored Heron and more!

Another successful birding trip Phil & Heather .. or hang on, this is already the third YT from the same day ;-) This time I preferred (the pose of) the spoonbill-about-to-dive with the Bokehfied TM! But for the smaller birds Heather had clearly the best shots in this video.
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Werner! Yes, Heather captured way better poses of the Blue-headed Vireo and the blue-gray gnatcatcher for sure! Thanks for watching! We did make three videos in one day. We usually like to wake up and shoot from sunrise until about 10 or 11 am but we only had one day to do bird photography (unless you count Animal Kingdom!) during our Florida trip so we tried to do as much as possible during that day.

Totally agree this is an awesome place! The boardwalk takes you right by a rookery where there are currently (Feb 8th) nesting spoonbills and great egrets that are very people tolerant allowing you to get great pictures! I’m expecting eggs to hatch around March 1st. Wood storks, vultures, bald eagles, purple gallinules, limpkins, etc, there are a lot of bird species around. Boardwalk photos are best in the afternoon with the sun at your back. It’s open sunrise to sunset allowing for great golden hour photos. It’s a great hiking area plus there are tram tours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9 AM to 3 PM. (Think oversized golf carts). The first time I visited, I thought to myself “magical!”
@PhilThach

That works out good for us that it is better in the afternoon. On our one day of birding during out yearly Disney trip, we go to Merritt Island in the morning and Orlando Wetlands in the afternoon. Thank you for the information, Robert! We hope to visit sometime other than January at some point but right now January works before for my family vacation schedule.

@@PhilThach Meriitt Island is great too! If you’ve never done it, the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive is also good. It’s open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s an 11 mile drive through the restoration area. Crews work there the other days of the week. Gate opens at 7 AM

Hey Phil, love your videos. watching your videos are like watching myself in the mirror. So thanks for sharing with all of us. I will be in Florida in early March (Disney) and plan on taking off for one day to go to a wetland to get some great birding experience. With your recent Orlando Wetlands trips where would you go if you only had one day to go our? Black Point looked really nice. Thanks
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Ray! We did Blackpoint and Orlando wetlands in one day. We woke up at Disney World, drove to Blackpoint and then went to Orlando wetlands. We were done by about 2:30 in the afternoon after getting up very early.

Excellent work, Phil and Heather! Keep it up! I've been using the R7 + 100-500 combo much thanks to your influence. Now, I noticed Heather shooting a bird flying by and it seemed to me she was using electronic shutter, is that so? Does it get you better results, despite the rolling shutter?
@PhilThach
@PhilThach Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We basically always use electronic shutter for birds, except for maybe hummingbirds with little or no problem. The biggest problem that we see with birds in flight and the electronic shutter is the background will be leaning when it should be straight up and down if we pan quickly.
@fsduartetube
