Canon's RF-lenses are incredible. The RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM is no exception.. or is it? Personally, I love this lens. It's my favourite lens ever. But it does have some issues, that make me wonder if this lens really is worth the price, and is it really up to Canon's L-series standards?
You can buy the lens here: amzn.to/3vgpMZ6
READ PINNED COMMENT! Got to know some new info about this lens that makes it an even better lens.
The RF 14-35 is extremely versatile. The 14mm is very wide and with the 35mm you can even get some macro shots. There is however a ton of vignetting at 14mm, so I wouldn't say this truly is a 14mm lens, but more like a 16-35. For videos the vignetting isn't an issue though, because it gets cropped out because of the aspect ratio. Otherwise the image quality is just fine, but it's nothing too special. All in all, the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM is a very good lens and for my use, it is just about perfect.

Actually is more of a 12-35mm. In JPEG or RAW with corrections on, the image is cropped to 14mm.
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean? The full image should be 14mm and it gets cropped down from that. It should never be wider than 14mm no matter what
@kaspergaram

Looking more closely to this, it seems like you are correct. This is something i’ve never heard of before, but there might be some truth to this. Seems like the Samyang 14mm is a tiny bit ”narrower” than the Canon at 14mm and after the lens corrections they are pretty much equal. Wish i knew this before making the video 😅 this is a very odd feature

@@kaspergaram It's a 12mm with horrible vignetting, optically. But these are times of digital corrections in lens design. Sigma is doing the same with the DG lenses, Sony with some GM. Cheaper manufacturing, smaller design...

@@kaspergaram Gordon Laing did a nice comparison that shows it to in fact be wider than the RF 15-35 f/2.8. After corrections it is a true 14mm at the wide end.

I don't mind digital corrections. The lens is actually wider than 14mm and after corrected and "cropped", the final image is 14mm. I think what really matters is the final image quality, not how it is achieved.

Thanks a ton dude! 😊 this is much appreciated. Did you read the pinned comment? Turned out that those two issues aren’t as bad after all, since there’s some weird stuff going on in the background. Optically it’s actually a 12mm lens, but after the in-camera corrections it is a 14mm image. Found out about this only after posting this video

hi Kasper! thank you for the video. i have one question, how do you find the lens balance on the R6 body, both in hand and in carry mode like over the shoulder or the neck?
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! 😊 weight is the biggest reason I wanted this lens over the 15-35 f/2.8. I feel like this lens balances really nicely with the R6 beacuse it’s actually quite a light lens. I personally don’t have any issues with the balance. Can’t say about carry mode though because i always carry my camera in my hands

Any thoughts on this vs the new 10-20 if I have a 24-70 2.8?
@kaspergaram
@kaspergaram 9 ай бұрын
Good question. I don’t have any experience on the new 10-20, but in my opinion, 10mm is already unnecessary wide. Of course it depends on what you shoot too. So i’d see the 14-35mm as a more useful range

Whats insane is the massive amounts of distortion at the widest angles. So bad that the camera forces on distortion correction with the resulting loss of resolution. IMO thats unacceptable for an 'L" lens at this price.

I do agree, but apparently it’s closer to a 14mm AFTER the lens corrections rather than being a 14mm without the corrections

Note: I ordered and paid for this this lens (Canon RF 100mm Macro Lens) almost a year ago now and understand that I had to wait 6-months to get this lens but I still don't have the "Tripod Mount Ring and Adapter" yet and Canon has refused to comment to B&H for an update. I believe that to be unacceptable customer service and therefore can't recommend "Canon equipment" to anyone.
