Make a video comparing the new 50mm 1.4 vs the 50mm 1.2. Would love to see it.

Coming from a motion picture background I can see why Canon made these lenses the way they have. For historical context the EF 1.4L primes and the 50mm f1.4 lens were widely rehoused and in that rehousing they were made to have the same dimensions externally so it was easy to switch lenses and then reset the matte box. It's not just gimbals but fluid heads and even geared heads you then dont need to rebalance. No one in motion picture has clickable apertures they are all smooth so motors can be used just like focus so again it's logical to those that shoot mainly video. For those shooting stills cameras like the R5, R5 MKII, R 6, R6 MKII and both the R3 and R1 have three control dials for stills so changing aperture is handled this way. These lenses will sell very well with filmmakers like the new RF 24-105 f2.8L Z lens and the RF 70-200mm f2.8L Z lens (in black). So Canon now have three lenses in the hybrid fixed lens line up the 24mm, 35mm, 50mm f1.4L VCM lenses. They need at least an 85mm to complete the series and possibly a 20mm and a 100mm (although that will likely have longer external barrels). By all accounts those that have shot and commented about the lenses like Christopher Frost say the sharpness, contrast and focus breathing as well as ghosting & flare are very well controlled. That was enough for me to immediately order the RF 50mm f1.4L VCM to add to the 35mm. The bokeh seemed very close to that on the RF 50mm f1.2L but had better control of light hitting the lens from the front and lets not forget is both lighter and cheaper. Make no mistake the lenses are expensive but compared to cinematography lenses they are cheap and modern designed meant for a short back focus and that's a huge plus.

Sigma Art series have the optional clickable aperture. Weird these don't. Thanks for the review.

Great video Gareth. 24mm vs 35mm vs 50mm f/1.4L showdown incoming?

Are there ANY optical qualities to these lens or do you need correction profiles 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
@nordic54903 ай бұрын
All modern lenses are designed to be used with software lens correction. Some testers do not understand this need. Canons DPP tool has the best Canon lens correction profiles, but only the very few smartest photographers use DPP for Canon lens correction (I do). With correction, this lens will be better than the old EF35mm F1.4ii

I think the aperture wheel being for video only is a huge missed opportunity. The Sony 24mm 1.4 G Master has an optional clickable aperture that can be used for both stills and videos plus it’s compatible with all Sony E-mount cameras. What was Canon’s engineers smoking?

I just got the consumer version of the RF 50mm f/1.4 L Lens and did a review of it on my channel, comparing it to the f/1.2 L. If anyone's interested, you can check it out my channel :)

Does it rattle, like the 35mm version, when switched off?
@Skux7203 ай бұрын
Yes, Canon confirms this in the intro video on their USA channel, this is normal operation

@@Skux720 Thanks, not good - it might be working as (badly) designed, but raises serious concerns regarding long-term reliability.

I have been using the 35 for awhile and tbh I won't even hear the rattle unless I shake the lens in purpose

@@wentan8978 Thanks for the first hand experience. I'm still undecided - I hope Canon will bring us a less-compromised 35mm 1.2 one day, but surely could make use of the extra stop of light the 1.4 brings over my current EF 35mm 2.0 IS USM right now already...

@@tom_k_d more option is always better :) I don't have any experience with the ef35 f2, but I after shooting portraits, landscape, families and fashion... I am honestly mind blown by the AF speed and sharpness of the 35 1.4. I don't know why but the lens correction doesn't seem to affect the sharpness at all.

What are you talking about? Rf 24 f1.4 has literally black corners but it’s not only bad vignetting. It’s nightmare! This lens is shame for Canon and it can’t be used without digital correction.
