The Canon RF800 is an odd one. It has a very limited f11 aperture but it's an 800mm prime, it's sharp and it has great image stabilisation which is fantastic for hand-held filming. Something you won't do on many long range telephoto lenses. Try finding a lens that can do what this lens can but with a wider aperture - you won't!
This lens is best suited for birders who are out trekking the land in search for new sightings. But it's also a fun zoom lens to create interesting sharp 'compressed' compositions. A budget zoom lens like the Sigma or Tamron 150-600 is probably a better option for 'all round' shots but the RF800 and it's smaller brother the RF600 may focus better and give you sharper more reliable results. However, that's at the cost of less shallow a depth of field and around 3000 more iso!

I had quite a negative view on the Canon RF 800mm f/11 - mainly as I could not imagine an f/11 lens could produce anything useable for me. I am into Wildlife, professionally and I usually use a Canon EF 600mm 4.0 III together with a Canon EOS R5. And yes, I was quite a bit shocked positively. Why? Because at good light the image quality isn't that bad at all. And it is super lightweight, the combo of Canon RF 800mm f/11 + Canon EOS R5 weights about 2kg. That is nothing. The autofocus is also decent. So what do you want more for this price? For me it is nice addition to my Canon EF 600mm 4.0 III, not a replacement. It is a lens I can take with me basically anytime. Well done, Canon!

Well said. I totally agree. At the end of the day, theres no other 800 prime out there that come near it for the price. Maybe Sigma might make an f8 or something but for now this does me just fine.

Man, not sure how I just barely found your channel, but that was definitely the best review of this lens out there!!! (way better than mine, 😅😂) I get a lot of negativity coming at me when I do my wildlife videos with this lens, but it's all from people who've never used it and just want to be keyboard warriors. I definitely agree that it has a lot of flaws, the worst for me is the lack of weather-sealing, but that light weight and stupid good sharpness makes up for it in my book. The production value and effort you put into this is fantastic and I definitely subbed! Also, your appreciation for tea is most excellent!

Thanks for the in depth review. I've been using the Tamron 150-600 G2 and while it's an excellent lens, it is pretty heavy, and I tend to leave it behind unless I know I will be taking long shots of wildlife. I just ordered the RF 800, and I'm hoping it will be small enough to pack along on longer hikes. It doesn't matter how great the bokeh on a lens is if you left it in your car because it was too heavy to pack along. I do applaud Canon for taking a chance on these lenses. Obviously a fixed f/11 isn't going to be for everyone, but I wish more of the big companies would produce these long-range entry level lenses. I hope it opens the door for more people to try wildlife photography.

Well Hugh, I just got in from my first walk out with my new RF800, which turned up this afternoon. I’ve had all the same reservations about it that everyone else has had but I have to say, I had some fun using it and I reckon, under favourable conditions, I’ll get some good shots with it. I’ve watched many videos on it but I reckon, yours was pretty much my favourite. Best, Julian

Thats great to hear Julian, glad you enjoyed the vid. Yeah, I knew what I was getting myself into also. Sometimes the image isnt as rich as what I'd get with the 150-600 but I'm nailing more shots of BIF in focus and I have crisper images on the whole.

I'm really glad I discovered this video, and I appreciate you creating it. The drone footage flying over the areas you explored was a highlight for me. I've been considering getting a set of drones in the future to serve as security, possibly triggered by motion sensors to do reconnaissance flights on demand. It's great to see potential locations beforehand if it's helpful. Additionally, I'm curious about where you typically sell your compositions. As an enthusiastic hobbyist, I hope to dedicate more time to improving my skills in capturing great shots.

@@HuFilms Good job on the video! I have not done much video, will start now. I have both the Sigma c and the 800 f11 for my R5. I originally planned to just buy the 800 this Spring, but could not find it in stock anywhere. I decided to buy the Sigma 150-600 for the speed and versatility of the zoom. I also purchased the Sigma 1401 1.4 TC. I enjoy the Sigma, but decided to put an order in on the 800 at B&H and they finally received stock a few weeks ago. I like both lenses, the Sigma for the zoom, but the 800 for the weight and sharpness. For now I plan on keeping both lenses.

@@MrSimpsonville Nice one Ed. I use both also. the 800 is better for birds in flight unless they're fairly close in which case it's hard to get them in frame and inside the focus box. There is a shortage on the RF800 lenses for sure.

I definitely enjoyed the style of this video. I also enjoy going out with the “impossible lens” to see if one can actually get decent shots with such a thing. It frankly is a fun lens to use and it being so lightweight is the main reason for that, along with the very decent IQ. And I have gotten some nice background blur with mine as when you get near MFD the 800 mm is stronger than the f11 by a lot, more so if the background is not super close. Another thing about the lens is that it is so lightweight that you can pair it will the 1-500 on another r5 and carry two rigs, something i would not do with my f4 lenses.

Try using the "Better Beamer" flash extender on a camera flash combined with a long lens near dusk in an area with lower humidity. It will focus the light into an area that is good for a 500mm lens. In high humidity areas, I would but the flash on a tripod about 15 feet away so that I could shoot the subject without shooting through the illuminated atmosphere.

I enjoyed your video and gave it a thumbs up! I got the RF 800mm back in November, I have an investment that pays out every year and it gave me the same as what the lens cost so I got it. I also have the Tamron 150-600mm and shot with the Canon R and R7. The lens is not perfect but had pros and cons and I feel for me it's like any other gear that has a useful purpose for certain situations. I'm retired now and older so I don't want a lot of weight. Several years ago I owned the Sigma 800mm f/5.6. Not as good as the Canon of that size but a pretty good lens. I took it on safari in South Africa and all I can say is I was glad I was sitting in a Land Rover with it instead of walking around! By the way, I got a cheaper aftermarket lens hood, Canon thinks a lot of theirs and charges a fortune. I also found a lens foot that allows me to mount the lens for both vertical and horizontal shots; about $60 on Amazon. I did get the Canon lens case, it's well made and fits the lens without being super bulky like some 3rd party cases. And I agree on a filter, I always have one on every lens I own. I will watch some of your other videos, love your nice accent and soft spoken voice.

Great review !! I have R6 and have "shot" 10,000 birds since mid August together with RF 600mm and during spring and summer another 11,000 with an RP. All my photoes are handheld and I am comfortable with carrying the total of 1.6 kg camera + lens. All my photoes are taken within 10 min. from where we live. Note, I "cheat" a little as my property is neighbor to Roskilde Fjord EU bord sanctuary !!! I purchased RF 800mm a few days ago and upgraded the software om my R6 to 1.5.0. No problems detected so far. My subjective impression is that the autofocus is better with 1.5.0. And the combined weight of 2 kg is quite acceptable - I'm far from a body builder :-)

Thanks a lot, that's great to hear. Well, cropping in with a large pixel count sensor won't be as good as getting closer to the bird with a lower res sensor! Also, you may have better low-light shots which is something of value with the RF800. Best of luck with your new gear!

Yes really good video and thoughtful well informed review. I am very much an amateur enthusiast. I am using and R6 and RF 100-500 at the moment. But, I'm pondering whether to spring for an R5 for the resolution and the quick on off video, as well as the extra weatherization. Also, while I do love the 100-500 for many situations, the reach of an 800 is something I am starting to yearn for. Think I will wait a bit and see what materializes in the market for the RF mount in the coming year or two. Let my wallet build back up a bit. See what the options are a bit down the road. I might get a 1.4 extender for the 100-500 to play with in the meantime. I just subscribed. Great channel. Thanks.

@@robgerety Since I got the RF800, I've managed to capture so much I would've missed without it, including my first kingfisher! If you can afford it, and know you will use it I would say get it first, and get the 1.4x after. (I got mine slightly cheaper from hdew, only £729 currently too!)

@@AHollowedHunter I already own and love the 100-500. I'm not going to sell that lens. So, I'm not yet sure about whether I will get nearly the same performance, but more convenience and flexibility, using the 100-500 with the 1.4 extender v. adding another big lens to my kit. But yes, the 800 f/11 is definitely something to consider and it clearly has a lot to recommend it as a low cost way to get into an 800.

Great video Hugh. The quick 120 4K record function while in stills mode is a game changer on the go. Nice one. Shame it doesn't have a panning setting on the IS, I know the Sigma and the Tamron have OS2 / VC2 just for vertical movements. The 800 is a prime so its gonna be sharp! id say it would be a monster of a lens on a safari

Thanks Donal. Afaik, the R6 might be slightly better in low light than the R5 and with less 'cropability' it's all the more reason to go for an 800. Enjoyed this Hugh. I've just traded my 1.7kg EF100-400L II in as it was just too short a focal length for birding. Adding a 2x TC got me to 800mm f11 and added yet more weight and bulk. My R5 handles high iso well but the images weren't that good. Quite soft in fact so I sold the 100-400 and got the 800mm f11. 0.5kg lighter and much better IQ than the 100-400 plus 2x TC. It fills a niche for me as a walk around lens that the 100-400 never could. I passed on the RF100-500 due to not enough reach and price. With an RF1.4 TC I think it still only gets you to 700mm at f10. With a 2xTC the IQ really suffers on any ot the Canon lenses so just not viable. I feel I've the perfect partner for my EF600mm F4 going forward.

Hi, I just watched your video and appreciated your commentary on the comparison with other lenses. There is one lens you could have added which is the 400mm f4 DO Mk2 that works very well with the 1.4X mk3 teleconverter. It also works well with the 2X mk3. With the latter the images are still sharp and useable but the AF slowed a fair bit. Not a cheap combo for sure but I suspect the RF 800mm will focus faster esp for BIF.

I just reluctantly purchased the Canon 800mm f11. I have a "Sigzilla" 300-800mm but though I really like it, it is a major chore to travel and shoot with it. It is extremely heavy, and you need a heavy duty tripod and a heavy duty yoke gimbal (a normal single arm gimbal sags under the weight of the Sigzilla) to handle it. I have long had the original Tamron 150-600mm, and was going to get rid of it when I upgraded to the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. But the Sigma is rather large and heavy. So I kept my old Tamron because it is still decent (with a little PP magic) and is sooo much lighter and a bit smaller than my new Sigma Sport version. When traveling it is nice to have size & weight options.

Lovely video.I don't shoot Canon, I use Sony gear but as a wildlife, mainly bird photographer, have the same issues with getting reach! Currently I use the Sony 200-600mm lens and the 1.4x teleconverter. This has the disadvantage that it is much heavier than your setup (about 1kg heavier) and is more expensive about £2K for lens and converter. However it is F9 and the advantage of the teleconverter is that it reduces the depth of field (not increase it as you state in your video). In fact with the teleconverter the depth of field is about the same as a 600mm F4 - so I can get good blurry foregrounds and backgrounds which is one of the reasons I love teleconverters. I also don't see any noticeable loss of image quality with the teleconverter. However operating at F9 causes higher ISO and also slower autofocus in darker conditions - but at least I have the option to remove the teleconverter when this happens :0). Look forward to seeing more of your videos.

While I don't think this lens is ideal for everyone, I do think it is amazing for what it costs. It's competition is the 150-600s from Sigma and Tamron, but it's still an 800mm when they are not. I shoot sports and I normally won't buy a lens that is not f2.8. I own a 400mm f2.8 IS V1 and a 2X III Converter. But that is an ungainly combo which I would not walk through the woods or the city with. I bought this lens a few weeks ago and I love it. It's. just a fun lens to walk around with. I added and aftermarket hood and a foot with built in area Swiss plate. Both for about $20.

The 150-600s from Sigma and Tamron, as well as the 180-600 (Nikon) and 200-600 (Sony) are 5.6-6.3s. The 600 and 800 fixed f11s are hardly "competitors "! Canon has patented a plan for a 200-600 and a 200-800, with maximum apertures at the long end of f8 or f9. Those might compete.

I have the rf800 f11 and I had both the sigma 150-600's in different mounts. I find the sigmas to be a bit sharper but they are much heavier....the S version is a beast and is just uncomfortable to use handheld for any amount of time. I'm using the rf800 on an R8 but I'm still cropping all the time (bird shots) so I'm considering getting an R7. The apsc noise penalty has me hesitating though because the 800mm f11 is such a slow lens, ISO is generally going to be pretty high. This video is very well done. I'm curious as to the hours put in to make this video. I imagine it was quite a few and I think many people don't really think about the work it takes to produce something like this.

I know that the old standard math of 2 times the lens mm for minimum shutter speed, but I think that you should experiment with some lower shutter speeds. I used to use the canon 55-250 IS on a canon rebel xsi (420mm equivalent). If I leaned against a tree while shooting hand held I could take still photos at 1/4 of a second, and if I was walking and stopped, I could get 50% stills at 1/40th of a second. The lens IS combined with the in body stabilization should let you get stills at a much lower shutter speed, and the lower shutter speed will then grant you lower ISOs. Say you go from a 2500 shutter to a 250 shutter, and from iso 5000 to iso500. You own the lens, give it a try.

What I thought when first saw them RF super zooms was that they are reaching to same users like those back in days buying EF 400/5.6 L IS USM and EF 300/4.0 L IS USM and used them with 1.4x or 2x TCE. It is hard to compare canon primes to Sigma. Focus, colors and contrast its Canons A game for years. It's smaller broders to the super telephoto beasts used in pro range L lenses such as 200/2.0, 300/2.8, 400/2.8, 600/4.0 etc. When I compare my 200/2.8 L mk2 prime to the latest EF 70-200 2.8 L IS the prime has a so much magic, AF is so fast and bokeh is amazing.. Nice "lens review", but i enjoy the wildlife footage/images a lot more than the review itself I began with the RF 800 (with the EOS RP) to get "properly" into wildlife after a lot of hassle with a very old DSLR and EF 75-300 IS USM. As soon i realized the RP doesnt work well with animal tracking at all except BIF at the sky as background... i got the R7. But the RF 800 on APS-C is with 1280mm another league of zoom, often good, but sometimes its annoying. Im thinking about the Sigma 150-600C 2nd hand to have a nice focal range additionally to the super light RF 800, its more universal on APS-C and got a bigger aperture to decrease ISO/noise a bit or just increase shutter speeds even more.

People forget two main reasons f11 is OK. 1. The lens and the R5 and R6 all have Image stabilization. Since a lot of birds are perched you can lower shutter speed to help compensate for f11! 2. Noise reduction software has gotten very good. I use Topaz and it gives excellent results. Canon has given very good image quality with reach we could have only dreamed about 2 years ago. Thanks for your thoughts. I am in a bit of a dilema, I shoot both motoGP and birds. I have gone through all of Canon's big whites and still have 2 x EF800mm lenses (one for the wife!) Flying with EF800 mm always results in hassle with carry on. Time to fly again but this time to Borneo for the birds that are mostly under canopy. There is no substitute for reach but the thought of convenience and that lightweight makes compelling sense except for the f11 under canopy cover scenes. I am thinking of the RF100-500 mm but like you said the reach is shorter plus with an extender brings the f stop back to f9. plus i do have the EF100-400 II and the EF200-400mm. I guess I shall need to test this one out first before a decision.
@HuFilms
@HuFilms 2 жыл бұрын
That is a tough call. The 100-500 is a great lens and is versatile. Plus it focuses better than ef adapted glass. But the lack of shallow depth of field at 7.1 is off putting for me. The rf 800 is great when the birds are further away and in flight etc. It's a tough decision. If you own pro 800 wide aperture glass (which I'd imagine costs a ton) then it's gonna be hard to be impressed with an f11 cheaper lens even if it is convenient. For me, the bigest strength of this lens is being able to shoot handheld video on the R5.

Hi Pete, thanks a lot, glad you liked it. I shoot with a 500mm F4 also and the RF800 is just so convenient I often find myself going for that lens. With the R6's less dense sensor it might work well as you'll want as much reach as possible. So 800 is great. Also, less pixels on the sensor will possibly result in less noise on the image in lower light as you can shoot lower ISO. High mega pixel cameras are a thing of beauty for wildlife work but if you're not cropping that much 24 is great too.

I've owned the Sigma 150-600c and used it on my Canon R5 for about 10 months. Yes, it is capable of the very nice shots. Unfortunately, the auto focus consistency is terrible ☹️ It hits perfectly about 15% of the shots I take with it. Check out some of the videos by Duade Paton, where he tests and discusses this "focus pulsing" issue extensively. I rented the RF 800 F11 a while back for a week, and did surprisingly well with it. Then struggled a few more months with my Sigma 150-600, and finally decided to just go on an buy the RF 800. I think my Sigma will be pretty much retired, maybe sold. It's really a shame, as when it actually hits focus, the image quality is fantastic. It's just terribly inconsistent ☹️

Yeah, I used that lens for a few years as my main bird lens. It's a decent all rounder but it's hard to get those 'pro' looking shots with it. The RF 800 isn't perfect either and you have a narrower focus area because of the small aperture. Still though, it'll get sharper detailed shots. On a bright day! You should aim to get yourself a more pro lens eventually. I got a Sigma F4 500mm at a good deal and though it miss focuses a bit too, it delivers really good shots.

I would say if you're not shooting birds and birds in flight, regularly then don't bother with this lens. For deer, you don't need that accurate a tracking focus, the main thing you want is wide aperture and shallow dof. In a way this lens is a real 'birdwatching' lens.
