Update to my response 11 months ago: I use this lens for about 95+% of my shooting, on one of my two R7's. I've never taken so many nice bird shots, with any other gear. I know this might sound crazy, but if I were to hit the lottery today, I honestly don't know what money could buy, that would be better for my purposes ? Its super light, very long, and very sharp. I think that pretty much covers it. Oh, and in low light, it's just fine, at a slow enough shutter speeds and I "always" shoot with a tripod, to make that possible. Of course I dream of a lens which was just a 'little bit' faster, a little better build quality, with a rotating collar, and some weather sealing..... but I know of no such lens :( So for the time being, and maybe from here on out, this will be my main birding lens.

This is great, you clearly had a blast. This is one use case where the R7 really shines, i.e. small birds and other animals at a distance in good light. I’ve also used this combo with the 1.4 extender from a bird hide. The handling and AF were great and the results really good. Ok there are limitations but it opens the door to scenarios that would otherwise be difficult (or expensive and heavy) to capture.

Thanks Lachlan, yes, the 800mm is a bit much at times and it is difficult to locate the subject quickly in the viewfinder. It really is a use case lens and you would need a zoom lens to accompany it. I will try some forest shots in the future. Cheers, Duade

@Duade

It all depends how close you are to the subject, if the subject is far off the R5 when cropped to the R7 FOV is 17mp vs the 32 of the R7, so the R7 actually has the advantage. Cheers, Duade

Pet Peeve: Don't know who needs to hear this but... a crop is *not reach.* It is *not* focal length. It's field-of-view. It's a crop. The best thing about the crop sensor is that it puts all your pixels into a smaller field of view - but for the love of all that's holy *STOP* comparing crop factor to focal length. You do not have 1,280mm of "reach" using this combination. You have 800mm of reach because that's the lens you're using. Period.
@Duade
@Duade 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and I understand your frustration, I agree that the focal length does not change and only the field of view changes. My brain lets me down at times when I say focal length instead of field of view and I apologise for that and try to put text on the video to say FOV. The reason I think reach is so commonly used to express the size of the bird in the viewfinder is It is a lot harder for someone to say wow I have such a narrower field of view compared to someone saying I have more reach. One is instantly understandable where as the other requires someone to understand what field of view is. I really don't think people will stop using the term reach as it is just easy to understand and if you looked at the meaning of the word reach it is either closer or further away. With a crop sensor the subject is closer in the viewfinder so its no wonder people understand this as reach, even if it might not be technically correct. I will work harder on not using the word focal length in terms of crop and will outline this in a future video. Thanks again for the comment. Cheers, Duade

Great video Duane. On the Canon 800 mm F 11 there is a focal box limited to the inside of the lens.?. With the crop sensor on the R7 is that box larger in the viewfinder? Also with the Eye auto focus tracking the bird within the viewfinder, is the eye autofocus are limited to the box inside the focal area of the 800 mm? Thank you. I think you just answered my question later on in the video. I think you said that the little focusing box inside the 800 on the R7 is quite a bit bigger, taking up almost all of the viewing area. So then if that’s the case then the auto focus should be tracking the bird over most of the sensor. Is this correct? A real frustration I have with the 800 mm on the R5 is the limiting area inside the 800 mm focal box. Especially for birds in flight, or for a composition where the focal area can’t quite be in the center of the lens. Thanks.

Hi Laura, the Sigma still works you just have to take a few more photos. The RF100-400 is a great lens on sale at the moment at B&H geni.us/avzOe. You could get a 1.4 converter as well and have a 140-560 f/11 lens. Nice video. Fantastic photos. I'm envious of your ability to track and frame these birds. As soon as my eye goes to the viewfinder I loose all concept of spatial awareness and I am as likely to have 32 photos of my boots as I am in having 1 photo of the bird 😁😁. I certainly need a lot more practice. What are your thoughts on using dot sights such as the Olympus EE1 dot sight? Excellent work, Duade! Especially during the Flame Robin section. You worked to get a great sun angle during the setting sun with the light coming from behind you. I find that the R7 struggles to focus a little bit in low light or with small apertures like the 800 f/11 or the 100-500 with an extender forces you to work with. That shutter sure is loud! The R7 shutter is much louder than my R6. I find I can get away with lower shutter speeds in electronic shutter mode because there is shutter shock that can cause blurry images. Good to know that I can switch back to the mechanical shutter once I get up to 1/800. I'm looking forward to hearing the information in the next video that you mention at 14:28 and seeing if it is similar to what I have experienced. Thanks, Duade.

This is awesome. I work at a camera store and wondered how enthusiastically I could recommend this combination to a customer. In the right light and with subjects at the right distance and in the open to make them easy to locate in that tiny field of view, this looks like a stunning option. And easy to carry too, which is a real benefit for those of us who are older. Agree that it should be paired with a companion zoom.

Hi Mate. I just wanted to let you know you’re driving on the wrong side of the street , and even your steering wheel is on the wrong side ! It’s OK in the outback (I guess), but don’t try that in town ! 😂 More seriously, Duade I noticed your raw files looked pretty good coming out of the R7. You think that’s true ? I do think the 100-500 produces better images though. DUH… My question is; do you think the shutter sound somewhat negates the crop body reach over the R6/R7 ? Can you stay in electronic shutter and still use it effectively in the field ? Also, do you think the lite weight of the F11 negates the camera shake when using the heavier 100-500 ? The quality of your raw files here make me wonder. Your experience is much appreciated. Thanks. Great Video Duade. 😊

I wondered why the Police keep stopping me ;-) The R7 is ok but I'm not sure it is as good as the R6/R5 in terms of IQ, AF etc. The reach is very nice in good light and it does have its advantages. I think I will use electronic in the future and just put up with the wobbling and warping. Overall once I am done testing the R7 I cannot see myself picking it up over the R5. Cheers, Duade

If you already own those lenses it could be an option for sure, I think the 1.4x extender makes more sense to be honest on the R7 as 800mm is a lot and using a 2x does impact IQ and AF. The 800 f11 is sharper then those combos. Cheers, Duade

G'day James, it all depends on the lenses I had. If I had my 500 f4 and 1.4x I would choose the R6 as the low light capabilities and AF are just much better. If I only had a 400mm lens then I would likely go with the R7 as the extra MP and crop factor will help make the subject bigger. The R7 performs very well in good light but really struggles in low light so if you shoot a lot of low light the R6 will perform much better. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade, @Kevin Blythe: I wonder whether the higher megapixel compensates some of this in this comparison... 32.5 MP against 17 MP aprox on the R5. At the same time, I always remember when people compared the (medium format) Fuji GFX 50S (51 MP) against upcoming FF cameras with more and more MP, the techie guys always replied: Ah but the pixels in the Fuji are larger, so you have a better quality in the Fuji files even if it trails in amount of MP against a, say, 60 MP full frame... I keep wondering if this is the case with Canon R5 in apsc mode vs Canon R7. Whether the second beats the first in amount of MP, but the first beats the second in the quality of them. Not a techie guy myself. Really asking myself these questions, so I extend them to you 😂. Cheers, keep up the good work!

Im wondering more... how much sense a 1500$+ camera make when you use a "super cheap" 800$ supertele lens? R10+ RF 800 is pretty much realistic, but anyone who can afford a R7 or better should be also able to afford "proper" lenses (like 100-500L + 1,4x extender) I mean, i love the RF 800 F11, but i NEVER would have considered this lens with a body priced much higher than 1000$! Or is my opinion just too outdated and "investing more in lenses than for the body" is already a wrong paradigm?
@Duade
@Duade 2 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to what you need in a lens and what your budget is. If you want reach then this is the cheapest way to do it regardless of the camera body. The RF100-500 is easily the best lens but that cost twice what the camera does and most cannot afford it. I would estimate the majority of people buying the R7 would want a lens under $1k but I could be wrong. There is also not that many lenses available between 1-3K for this camera. Tamron and Sigma have their 600 zooms and Canon have their two zooms. My next video will show what is possible with lots of different lenses. Cheers, Duade

@@Duade "would estimate the majority of people buying the R7 would want a lens under $1k but I could be wrong" Thats basically my point... If i could afford anything like EOS R7 (or better) the 100-500 and similar priced glass would be already an alternative, but for most people as you said: Sub 1000$ is the goal for lens prices (and it begins normally with a body for less than 1000$!) I mean, i even had to sell most of my lenses because they dont really perform well on a modern DSLM. I dont know why... but before i had a huge camera upgrade (fked up and faulty EOS 550D to a new EOS RP) i didnt pixel peep at all, i was just happy to get even half usable results with super cheap and old gear, but since i have the RP i somehow try to get the most out of this camera/sensor as good as possible, its still a 1000$ body which i want to get more out of it... and especially in wildlife i began to pixel peep a lot (mainly due the fact that i have to crop much with "just" 26MP and its hard to get a nice, frame filling shot) So considering i had to "throw away" 300-500$ lenses (worth new in the mid and late 2000s^^) because their image quality is just inferior and they are unpractical, slow AF etc for the performance of even a basic EOS RP.... Im not so sure if its really a good decision (to get the most out of it) to use for example on a 1500-2500$ body just a "beginners" RF 100-400 for around 500$ I think this lens will end up like my 75-300 IS USM.... its probably "ok-ish" for the first months and for very rare usage, but in long term, especially when you are often on full tele range, its just a hassle to use a "beginners" lens, the missing IQ and sharpness can get a big problem and lead to frustration. I was literally frustrated with my 75-300mm for years before i just realized its time to get something better than the absolut worst.

@@Duade "My next video will show what is possible with lots of different lenses" Nice, sounds interesting im waiting for it! It will come for me personally like 4 weeks too late but i guess the RF 800 F11 was anyways the best decision (and only one, considering the price^^) The versatility of affordable 150-600s would have been awesome... but i missed too much on the wider end (100mm would be super nice!) and the 150-600mm gets noticable less sharp with teleconverters, another huge NoGo and 600 isnt enough yet. The Focus pumping i could live with, im anyways often in AF-S to have 5 instead of 4 fps on my poor mans RP, but in overall too much downsides for my wishes to make its price reasonable.

I really enjoy your videos both for the information and to see things that are not in my part of the world. I have an R5 and rf 100-400 with a 1.4 extender when I know I'll be looking for small birds. I have been thinking, once I get caught up on my previous lens-purchase expenses, of getting the rf 800. Other than less pixel density, which could limit extreme cropping (the cropping in your images seemed "modest"), if I used the rf 800 on the R5 in crop mode, would I get somewhat similar results to what you are demonstrating with the R7? Or would I be better off losing an f stop and using my 1.4 converter with rf 800 instead of using the crop mode? Cheers from Ohio, USA, Ted

G'day Ted, I think long term the RF800 could be a good second lens when you know you need reach with small birds. You will need good light and the AF is not as good as your 100-400. But for its price it does offer plenty of reach when you need it. I do like the RF100-400 with a 1.4 as it is more versatile but 560mm vs 800mm is noticeable. Cheers, Duade

G'day Bill, BIF is by far the most challenging of all the styles in Bird Photography and there will always be a high failure rate. In saying that the R5 has been game changing for me the way the eye tracking locks onto the subject. The RF100-500 R5 combo works very well. The new R7 would be an upgrade over the 7d2 and has the eye tracking which will work better. Thanks Chris, I think it is always a balance with trying to keep the ISO down. I think with the IBIS and IS 1/640th should be able to get sharp shots. In saying that I did get plenty of soft shots and perhaps the SS had something to do with that. I guess that is why I shoot in bursts, I know that at least a few will be sharp. Cheers, Duade

Thank you for this video. I was engrossed! The birds of Australia are so pretty and so different from those we see in the UK and I love your images. I am still researching a suitable next camera and the R7 is one that I am very interested in, but this big lens would be too heavy for me. I don't know anything about Canon lenses and would be chuffed if you could suggest any others that might be suitable for animal and bird photography that would go with the R7? I could then research them further and figure out combined camera+lens weight, and camera+lens costs, to see what suits my 'strength' and budget best! No worries if that is too big an ask. (I will still watch your videos!!)😁

Thanks, I highly suggest you check out my review of the RF100-400, it would make a perfect companion to the R7 and is very light. Cheers, Duade kzbin.info/www/bejne/oIfHgodmopifpc0

@@Duade Thank you so much. I will do that. In fact I may already have watched it before out of interest, but not taking it on board with a view to using it with a new camera at that point. I will watch with intent this time! 👍

I really like my Sigzilla 300-800mm f5.6, but the size and massive weight, and the need to use a heavy duty tripod with a heavy duty yoke gimbal, results in me never having it with me when I want/need it the most. I have broken down and purchased the Canon 800mm f11 with some trepidation due to that fixed f11. I will continue to use my Sigma 150-600m f5-6.3 sport because it is just about as heavy as is still manageable when traveling, and the IQ is very good. I did, however, keep my old Tamron 150-600 because it is still useable and is so much lighter and a bit smaller than the Sigma.
