I love wide angles lenses, too. I just got this one for my r50 a few weeks after getting the 16mm f2.8 I love both lenses, the 18-45 also locks the lens the same way

This lens is amazing on the C70. Another fun note…at 13mm…it becomes fullframe on the R5C.

@@JaredHoymanI got the R5C in 2022 and the C70 last year. 99% of the time, I reach for the C70 without hesitation. The C70 is really an “ARRI Alexa” in a small compact formfactor. FWIW, I was in Burbank for the C400 launch earlier this month. Canon has made from great innovations there. That being said….I’m still in love with the C70; more DR, more compact….more “affordable”. The R5C has become my B-cam.

@@aregal I’m deciding between the 2 and you may have sold me on the c70. I like the idea of clog2 and internal nd filters along with the mini xlr’s. The price on refurbished has come down quite a bit.

@@JaredHoyman I made a “year with the C70” review video. I have the Mid49Cage with the Mid49 adapter. It makes it a breeze when connecting XLRs and when I need to fly it on a RoninS2. It’s a solid cage and deceivingly looks bulky but all the “bulk” is in the right places.

Well, I was on the fence with this or the RF 16mm to be used on an R7. I was waiting for a vid like this and I think you’ve pushed me in this direction. I still want to see how the RF 16 is on an R7 and how much it crops for talking-head shots. I think having the extra wide option is better though. Either one will still make a nice Christmas present. I freaked out too, when I slapped this lens onto my R7 and saw what I thought was an error message. I was thinking I either got a dude, broke it, or screwed up the update to my R7 (because I had issues updating it through the Connect app). Glad to see I wasn't the only one. I'm taking this thing to Cuba with me in a couple days with a CPL filter. I really want those wide vista's of crystal blue water beaches.

The DJI Pocket 3 seems hard to beat for vlogging, stable footage, great color and low light capability. If you only get to have one camera, the R7 would be a great option.

Thanks Jared, I'm using the old EF-S 10-22mm on the R7 as I prefer it (brighter lens with less distortion) over the EF-S 10-18mm. But I need a second lens for another body and considering this one as a RF mount option. What is the distortion like when shooting real estate video? I'm tipping it's not great.

It self corrects in video with the r7. The distortion is not bad. I find myself using it as a top down product video more often because of the close focus distance.

First, Merry Christmas to you and yours Jared! :) Second, I have the question that plagues all beginning and aspiring photographers like myself: as a professional would you, or do you think it's possible to use the RF-S 10-18mm for professional work? I know you said elsewhere you wouldn't use 10mm for real estate, but in terms of quality would it measure up in your opinion? Like you I want to get in to real estate but also architectural/art photography and you've sold me on this lens, but how might it compare with the EF-S 10-18mm on an adapter? Thanks in advance!

Merry Christmas to you too! The 10mm on a crop sensor is equivalent to 16mm on a full frame, which is wide enough for real estate and architecture. I shot with a 16-35 f4 EF lens on full frame for yrs before going mirrorless. I would be comfortable using the 10-18 RF-S on my R7 on a real estate shoot shoot if something happened to my other lens and camera. It’s definitely capable and in my opinion it is a better option than the EF-s version.

Have you discovered that when in manual focus mode you can get much closer to the lens for macro? I mean really close, almost hitting the glass. But only in manual focus. Its insane.

So this would be a 16-29mm equivalent on the R6ii? I'm looking for something wide and cheap. I'm not concerned with bokeh as it would be used for a more vlog style while suction cup mounted to my windshield while driving. Not sure how much interest there would be from others but is it possible to do a comparison of this lens with the 14-35 on your R6ii?

It would be that equivalent, but the system will automatically crop the image, so you'll be left with about 10 megapixels.

I just bought the R7 for my cooking KZbin channel which was an upgrade from my iPhone 12 Pro!! I just listened to my Mothernlaw thinking she knew what she was talking about and I didn’t buy the kit lens and bought the 50mm instead. What a mistake! I can’t get my whole counter in frame or even just my mixer. Would this lens work for me? I use the 1-2x on my phone to film. Any help would be appreciated. I don’t want to keep buying lenses…. I’m really novice to using this camera and the Learning curve.

Excellent question and congrats on your first high end camera and rocking it on youtube. You're almost at 20k subs! That's awesome! The good news is this lens is very reasonable in price for what you are getting and you can get very close to "food" with the autofocus for any hand held shots. Where it's not long enough in the zoom you can always crop in 1.6x in the menu on the R7. Resolution does go down a little, but people will not know on youtube or social media. Otherwise you can pick up the Canon 14-35 f4. RF L series lens and if you order it inside of a best buy at their service desk with a person you may get an amazing deal like I did, which was $850. The lens is usually $1300. Super sharp with a constant f4 and zooms to 35mm. Otherwise, if you don't mind an ef to RF adapter sigma has the 18-35 1.8 EF lens and that is super sharp on the R7. If in doubt rent or go to your local camera store and see if you can try these on your R7 in the store.

I just checked out your channel and my gut based on your shots would be to get the 10-18mm RF. You can get close to the food and have nice wide shots of everything. Just my thoughts ;)

First off thank you very much taking the time to reply, I appreciate very much. Second thank you for the very much for the kind words on my channels success. I just reached 200 uploads in the last two and half years and about to hit 20k subscribers all on an iPhone 12 Pro. I upgraded because I got tired of running out of memory for on my phone. Only having 128gb of memory and filming in 4K, I was struggling to have room to keep my personal pictures on my phone and sometimes I wasn’t in the frame or what I was trying to capture was in the frame. My perfectionism wasn’t happy with it at all. I’m glad this lens is in my price range! I have a content suggestion. Since I upgraded the the firmware last week… the menu’s on the R7 has changed drastically and there is no videos on that update set up.

I have the ef-s version of this lens what’s the difference vs the rf version?

It’s smaller and gets over 5 inches closer for focusing. At 10mm I can almost touch the lens to the subject and have it in focus. It has the same 4 stops of IS but offers another 2 stops with a RF camera with IBIS. I don’t have the RF version to compare optics so I don’t know for sure the difference there. It’s a very quiet lens and light with excellent autofocus.

That is a good question. If you use your 10-18 a lot, then it might be worth it for you. It is lighter, focuses a lot closer and pretty quiet. You also don't have the bulk of the ef to rf adapter. Optically, it is good for a non L series lens, but I don' thave the EF 10-18 anymore to compare optics.

Jarod can you help me.... I do real estate Photography and for a long time i was using a canon 80d with the canon 10mm - 18mm lens. recently I upgraded to a full frame EOS R6 mark two using with my 10mm -18 not realizing that pairing the two together makes my r 6 a crop sensor camera. So after seeing your review of the canon RF 15mm - 35mm I went out and bought that lens....To my surprise my 10mm - 18mm lens which on a crop sensor camera is really a 16mm - 29mm is much, much wider then my 15mm - 35mm lens when its on the r6. When the heck.... shouldn't my 15mm be slightly wider? I have photos but cant add them to this comment.

It sounds like you may have forgotten to take it off the 1.6x crop mode on the R6. Go into settings and make sure it says FULL and not 1.6x. Let me know if that did the trick.

Thanks for the response, the camera automatically switches from 1.6 crop when you install a crop sensor lens on the camera as well as if you put a full frame lens on the camera and automatically sets it to full frame

I have issues with some of Canon's decisions, but I definitely do not have issues with the excellent close focus capabilities of plenty of their new lenses, like this one, the 18-150, and the 100-400. Makes for a lot of fun.

16mm full frame is equivalent to 10mm on aps crop sensor camera and I would say don’t go any more narrow than that for real estate at your widest. So, that being said I think this is an excellent choice for real estate on a crop sensor camera. Video at 4.5 looks great on the r7. Photo quality is excellent too. It may not be canon L series quality but optically it does very well and clients won’t know a difference. I would use this as a backup to my 14-35 RF f4 on my r6ii.

That’s a good question. You can. It will crop in 1.6x but on the R5 you have plenty of pixels to spare.

That is a benefit when adapting EF to RF. I will say I have had both and optically the RF is better.

Im not fan of those rfs lenses, the way make them. It seems like you are not abel to use lee/ formatt hitech filter set on them because of those delicate focus or zoom abilities. Really a shame 😒😒

It’s not possible. Canon doesn’t allow you to turn off IBIS and leave lens image stabilization on. It either all on or all off.
