Fun video today, can my first digital camera, the Canon D30 still take quality images? I do a simple studio shoot to find out and we talk a little bit about the history of the digital switch in photography.

nice video, thanks for taking the time. this is a forgotten camera for many, but it's the one that got me out of long weekend hours in a cramped bathroom developing film, pulling contact sheets and eventually, hopefully, a few prints. it was my introduction to what it meant to post process in good light while seated in a comfortable chair, perhaps a coffee or cocktail in hand, and have a finished print framed and hanging on the wall 45 minutes after i shot the photo. honey, i'm home!

Thanks for watching. I love your comment. Yes, digital brought an amazing freedom of time. Not that the darkroom process didn't have its magic and intrigue but.........

Thanks for the video Todd. Bought my first SLR in about1973. Mostly used Nikon’s and finally got a Bronica MF setup in about 1995, before going digital. I still use a Canon 40d (10 megapixel) I got about 15 years ago - old by today’s standards. I miss the “craft” of deliberate exposure when using film. I find most modern cameras needlessly complex and confusing - I hate the built in obsolescence. Somehow the joy of photography is not there anymore. PS - the Nikons and the Bronica still work well.

Got mine today. You should compare it to the 1600 ISO film. Even D30 would destroy it ;) and what's funny, even later 1Ds had only ISO 1200.

I've been interested in really old stuff lately; great demo. Makes me wonder if it even has a frame buffer at all. That lens is actually about 6 inches from my hand as I type this, too. Man if you ever get the opportunity to try out a Foveon camera, give it a whirl. It takes having to do everything right the first time to a similar extreme, but the reward is an often otherworldly, hyperreal result in the right outdoor light or insane levels of realism and detail.

Yes! Thanks for the comment. Up until last summer I did all my professional work with the original 5D. New gear is great but there is a loss of technical know how......or at least the mindset of "let the camera do it" is out there.

Hmmm...My first DSLR....10D, in 2003, paid $1500. I had been a Canon shooter going back to 1979, starting with an AE1-Program, A1, F1 (all 3 models), T-90 up to the EOS 1N (of course with a power booster). I had been intrigued with DSLRs going back to the late 90s when I had a chance to play around with a DCS 950 while freelancing with AP back then. The 10D was definitely a “prosumer” rig and kept most of my film gear for a few more years. I bought a 1D in 2006 and later the 1Ds (FF), at which I began to sell off my film rigs. After some 38 years, I made the switch to mirrorless, specifically, Fuji. Still, I wish that I held onto at least the 10D or 1D, just for nostalgia’s sake. That said, I did keep my war-torn, beat-all-to-hell F1AE, God I love the camera, you can’t kill it.

Thanks for the comment. My first film camera was the AE-1. I wish I would have kept that as well. Thanks for watching.

Nice video, thank you. I haven't seen a current review on the D30 in a long time. I own 2 of them and still use both on occasion. The D30 does quite well for anything web related posting. Even at that it will produce fine images, as you note, if the photographer does his/her part.

Thanks for the comment! I thought I'd get more response than I did from this subject so to hear your comment made it worth it.

Thanks for the video. QUESTION: I can't connect my EOS D60 to my computer! I tried DPP4, EOS Utility 2 and 3 all on Windows 11...how do you manage?

Thanks for the question. I am guessing that the reason you are trying to connect the camera to the computer is to download images? If that is the case I wouldn't do it that way. I use a card reader to download images. I just don't like making my camera do the extra work. Same thing is true with charging the batteries. I never charge them in the camera. Hope that helps.

@@Todd_Kuhns Thanks. I actually ended up calling Canon, because Windows recognized the camera, but my programs could not find it. I mentioned that I did not have a CF card in there yet and the Canon rep immediately replied that this must be it. It makes sense, kind of, though I'm not sure he's correct until I test it, which I'll do after the ordered CF card arrives. I actually want to control the camera with my computer since I'm using it for astrophotography. But I can also just use the camera for that and then transfer the images later if need be.
