I am always confused when people suggest moving the camera up to the white card. Wouldn't this essentially change the amount of light being let into the lens? Would it not be better to use center point or one point autofocus and tap the screen to where the white card is located and then take the picture for the scene where the camera will actually be located? Some have recommended this method instead.

Spot/center metering would work just fine. Nothing wrong that. I just like to fill the frame with the card so I have a bigger picture to work off of in post processing.

New one coming out soon. I'm getting into the actual color correcting with 2 different color checkers (x-rite & Datacolor) to see if there's a difference...if color correcting even matters...if anyone cares...or if it's really for professionals. Thanks for the view and the comment. I'm trying to keep it simple.

If you're shooting in raw, these settings don't matter, right?

Correct. It only affects jpeg and video shot with picture profiles. At least that's my understanding.

It's irritating that Canon made this more convoluted than it used to be. It used to be that I'd just pick the exposure setting on the quick menu, move over to the custom and then point the camera at anything white and press the set button and it was done. It was so fast and easy I could switch the white balance as I was shooting. Now on my G9X, M10, M6 and M6 II I have to do this "take a photo", go into the camera's giant menu, remember which menu it's in, select white balance...... yada yada. I left Canon for a few years and bought a Sony and couldn't believe setting white balance was a mess because on Canons it was easy. Then I returned to Canon and had realized they messed up theirs too.
