Canon SX740 Walkthrough

This video is going over the layout of the Canon PowerShot SX740. This is to help those who have purchased the camera, either to introduce them to the buttons and doors, or for someone who has already had the camera but needed a reminder. The more you know, the less you will feel intimidated with the available settings and features! I also have photo and video examples from the camera at the beginning of the walkthrough!

I haven't had a new camera in over 10 years, at least. I just got this camera and haven't even gotten a chance to play yet and don't really know where to start, so I'm watching all kinds of videos about it. This is a really thorough and comprehensive walkthrough of the SX740 HS camera. I think the camera is a "big brother" of the camera I have been using for about 10 years - the SX700 HS. I really think Canon cameras are great quality, with plenty of great features.

Loved this video! Quick question though: can you manually adjust aperture while in program mode? I’m still learning about iso, shutter speed, and aperture, but I haven’t been able to figure out the aperture settings quite yet

You can adjust aperture OR shutter speed in Program mode, to a limit. Because the camera is assisting you, it will put a limit on both settings depending on the lighting of the environment you are shooting to ensure you can still get a well exposed image. Great question!

Really appreciate your video. Very informative. I'm trying to take indoor sports pictures but they are coming out blurry either because of the action or not enough time to focus properly between shots. Have tried auto and also the sports mode taking multiple shots. Would the TV mode be better? I would appreciate any help on this.

Unfortunately, this camera does very poorly with action and low light. Your best option would be having more light in your environment, but that is I am sure out of your control. Another point and shoot that does better in these areas is the Panasonic ZS100.

Yes! You can download the Canon app on your phone and use your phone as a remote for the camera :)

Hello, excellent information. I purchased this camera for vlogging purposed for my channel. I tried recording a little bit and during the play back the image looked very pixelated and not clear. I came across your video. Wondering if there is a specific setting I should have my camera on for my vlogs? I would really appreciate your answer and assistance. Thank you :)

It definitely shouldn’t be pixelated, but try these settings and let me know if it changes anything! In your video mode on the mode dial, go to your menu, and the first tab/shooting settings On page 1, make your movie rec. size FHD 59.94 On page 4, ensure your AF method is on AF face tracking On page 5, Turn on your IS in IS settings and Enable Auto level If the video is still poor quality, go back to the menu tabs and select function settings and reset the camera on page 5. If the camera is still not working correctly, you may want to contact the location you purchased your camera!

Thank you very much for a well-made walkthrough. I have been considering this camera and like most of its features. My main two concerns, however, are that it is now (September 2022) a four year old model so perhaps I'll wait for what comes next in this series(?) AND wondering why the display screen has so much black space around the edge rather than making use of the full screen. What's the point of having a 3-inch display and not using all of it? Great question on the screen lol in the time this camera was released, a lot of cameras had this black boarder for no particular reason. So I wish I could tell you why it is a waste of space. When it comes to a new model, I am not sure they will release one anytime soon. Canon and Nikon do not put priority in their point and shoots. If you are looking for a newer option with similar or better features, take a look at the Panasonic ZS80.

Hi there! I would like to know if it's possible to do real bokeh image (with background super slick) with this camera. Not sure how to use it properly

It is not impossible for some light bokeh but it is difficult. The more you have your subject close in the foreground with the background farther back will achieve some blur to the background, but because the sensor is so small it makes it difficult. The bigger the sensor the more bokeh ability you have

This is a great video...very thorough. I have a question about SD cards. Is there a particular size card you would recommend for this camera? What size SD card would be the best for capturing some 4k video? How long should each 4k video segment be for a particular card?

I would recommend a U3 card, 64 - 128GB. I find that Promaster, Lumix and Sony are the most reliable brands, but try and buy them physically in a store. With a 64 GB, you should be able to get a little over an hour of 4k video, and 128gb should get you twice that.

I would say this is a great camera if you want something similar to your phone, but with a better zoom. If you want a point and shoot that will do great with concert photos, I would look into the Panasonic ZS80, or for even better low light ability, the Panasonic ZS200!

The SX740 is faster, has 4K video, and manual modes available vs just automatic so I would definitely say if you want the ability to learn a bit and have control in the camera, do the SX740

Hello! I just got this camera out of the box and I love the HD video feature, I jsit have one problem. The mic quality is very bad. It sounds like someone is covering the mic when I play it back. I shared the video from my camera onto my phone and even still the sound quality was terrible. I don’t know how to change the audio settings. Any tips??

You could try going to the last page of your shooting menu and turn off the wind filter to see if that helps, however, it’s unfortunate because a lot of built in mics are not very good so it’s hard to get around that. Higher end models that have more customization or at least a mic port give you better options for better sound.

The fuji is much better than the sx740 in multiple ways. Definitely worth it.

To change the video quality, make sure you are in the movie mode> go into the menu>shooting settings (red camera tab)> page 1> movie record size> and choose the 4K option. On this camera, the only way to record 4K is through the video mode.

Hello! I've noticed that sometimes my video clip will not transfer to my computer. I keep getting a notification that it can't be sent (transferred). Therefore I usually clip video and create a new file or overerite it and that works. What can I do to avoid cutting my video and transfer my videos smoothly. Thx

TheQueenPalace that seems like a very odd occurrence. Are you transferring via card reader, USB or attempting to transfer through WiFi?

@TheQueenPalace Ah there is our problem! Unfortunately, wifi is extremely limited when it comes to transferring video. Canon is working on their app to better the issue but not there quite yet. If you are using Apple, there should be a drive that pops up on your desktop when you plug it in via usb although there have been issues with cameras communicating with the Apple system properly so I would recommend getting a card reader that you can plug into your USB or USB-C port to get a direct read to your videos versus it going through the Canon software to find it. If you have a windows, it should definitely read it with no issues, just go to any file or My Computer, click on the left side where your camera is (Could say Canon) and then you have access! Let me know if you have any other questions!

I haven’t heard anything from Canon about an updated model, but with point and shoots they seldom announce them, they will just silently ship out a new model and stop making the old one. As this one was released in 2018, I imagine they would come out with a new model in the next year or two, so we will see!

Depending on who the seller is on Amazon, there have been purchases that have been grey market cameras off Amazon. You always want to be sure to check the seller and make sure it’s from Amazon, the manufacturer or you can shop with a store who is an authorized seller.

AGREED! You can select multiple to delete by going to Menu > Playback Settings > Page 1 > Erase Images > Select and Erase Images

Just found your video and it was very well done. I enjoy taking photos of birds while hiking and this camera works very well, however, after every photo there is a pause of a few seconds while the camera says it is Busy. This is really annoying. Do you know how to make it stop doing that?

It sounds like you have a card that is too slow. I recommend getting a card that has a U3 symbol on it (the 3 is inside the U on the card itself), this will allow the camera to process much quicker and you won't get that busy screen! Here is one I recommend: amzn.to/3whikuY

@@nikkidail1570 That is interesting. Can I ask where you purchased it? In rare cases, if purchased online, sometimes you get a slower card than what the sticker reads. If it is a reliable card, I would take all your images and ensure they are backed up on your computer and safe. Then I would format the card inside the camera. There may be a lot of backup data bogging up the speed.

I do not recommend Sandisk, as they have had major issues in the last several years, but hopefully formatting fixes the issue!

If I had to choose just between the Nikon and the canon, I would say the Canon even if it doesn’t shoot in the RAW quality that I like, but if you don’t think you will take advantage of editing your photos extensively, it’s perfect.

I am afraid I can not supply photos at the moment, however, I am happy to give a more detailed description: - when looking at the back of the camera, you will see 5 circles on the right hand side from the screen. 2 small up high, one big in the center and 2 small below. - when you turn your camera on, press the bottom left button to view photos you have taken. - use the big circle (that will allow you to press upward, downward, left or right) to move left or right through your images to find the photo you would like to delete. - once you find the image you would like to delete, press the upper left button and a prompt will come on the screen asking if you would like to delete this image. - select yes and look for the next image to delete OR if you are done and wish to take more photos, gently press the shutter button (picture taking button) on top of the camera half way down. If you still get lost, let me know which step you are struggling with!
