The Nikon D5500 has more focal points (39), BUT the Nikon has just 9 cross-type sensors and the Canon T6i has all 19 focal points as cross-type sensors, and that makes difference if focal points are important for you.
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Agreed and good point:). Cross-type will yield better/tighter focus - the more the better especially for moving subjects across the frame. I typically leverage my center focal point and recompose if needed.

Thanks for the post/feedback and glad to be of help/inspiration!:) The T6i is a great capable camera. I used the Nikon D3400 for a number of videos simply because I had quick access to one when discussing other topics. Nonetheless, each video can be applied to any camera including the T6i ... most are not camera specific rather they focus on various techniques, etc.

I've had this camera for the last 5 years. It was my first DSLR, so I can't compare it to Nikon or any other brand, nor am I interested in doing so. I have bought various Canon EFS/EF lenses for it and have been delighted with both the quality of the lenses and the options they have given me. I have to say that I've had an incredible time with the T6i and would recommend it to anyone interested in dipping their toe into the wonderful world of photography. I'll be moving on soon (probably to the Canon 90D, if I can get the cash together) for three reasons: battery life, frames per second and build. At the end of the day, I can honestly say that owning the T6i has changed my life. I don't work for Canon, by the way :-).

Thanks for the post/feedback Peter!:) Something I have come to realize over the years is that each major manufacturer makes solid/decent gear for the most part (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, etc.). The T6i is a solid camera to gain a better understanding in the world of photography. I have been looking at the Sony lineup and may jump soon as well:).

Great review. I'll be using my first unit to shoot independent music vids as well as fitness vids mostly, but also some still shots. Let's say at a ratio of 70% vid 30 %photo, which would you recommend?
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback:). If you are on a relatively tight budget and plan to shoot more video than photos, I would consider the T6i or the Nikon D3300 (not 3400 (the 3400 does not have an external mic port)). The T6i comes with an STM lens which is Cannon's silent auto focus lens (works great). Nikon comes with the AF-P (the P is Nikon's silent auto focus lens (works great as well). For better audio consider using a Rode mic or the like. This is a small external boom mic that connects to the external mic port and attached to the external flash slot. You might also consider the Zoom H1 and a cheap lavalere mic (this is what i use - kzbin.info/www/bejne/aoTXe2mHor6pprM).

@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
Both are solid, but I might lean towards the T6i especially if you plan to capture video with the camera. Canon did a great job with their STM lenses and auto focus system:). Nikon removed the AA filter which is nice as this tends to soften images. If you have no plans to capture video, you might want to consider the D3400 as it should be on sale since the D3500 was just release (the image quality between both will be the same as they share the same sensor and resolution:)).

Love your videos! I think I have narrowed my first DSLR purchase to the Canon T6i and Nikon D5500. I am really struggling with the decision. I will be primarily using for photography...maybe the occasional video. On paper the D5500 seems like a clear winner. I also have read multiple sources who believe Nikon to be a better brand for photos. I know it really depends on the person behind the camera...if it was your best friend or family member asking...would you go T6i or D5500??

I'm sticking with nikon. I did eleventy billion hours of research before I bought my camera and chose the one I did because it seemed to me that I could do anything with it. I very often ask people in the know if they think I'm into it over my head financially. My plan was to buy lenses and equipment that would transfer over if I wanted to go to a better body. But hey, who am I kidding. How much can I shoot from a wheelchair. I'm an amateur and the best I can hope for is to be a good one. I can do tons of stuff with guys like you around actually. One being macro. I'm rigged up for that fairly well. So thanks for the honest test. My daughter is a photographer, weddings an outdoor and is a cannon girl so we now have a new subject to argue about. How bout another test on that D3400? What a great camera to learn on. The other is shooting in raw. I'm still not with it on that one. This stuff goes whizzing by and I write down a lot of subjects to study but as y'all can clearly see P.T.S.D. AND A.D.D. HAS ITS WAY WITH ME. wave something shiny in front of me and you have me.

Great review sir. Very good job, thank you. I'm about to buy my first DSLR and the 750d is one of my options.. Things that hold me back is lack of 60fps at highest res, low battery performance and the fact that this camera is not weather resistant, as I would like to take it with me at the beach and such adventures. Image quality seems impressively good to me, given the fact that you used the standard, not of such high quality, kit lens. Did you edit and post process the pictures or are these the actual colours the camera produces? (it's probably the first one, just need to confirm tho hehe)

Well done. Indeed, the Nikon D5500 is less expensive, has more features and better WiFi, shoots 1080P at 60fps and does NOT have that nasty, sharpness and detail killing low-pass filter in front of the sensor. Even if you started off with Canon, I'd recommend ditching them and going with Nikon, unless you have a large investment in lenses (and maybe even then).
@RealWorld8 жыл бұрын
Hello Patrick and thank you for the feedback/comment!:) I agree on all points made:). The Canon STM lenses are great for video, so look for the Nikon AF-P lenses if you down the D5500 path and want to shoot video w/ AF. I also feel the Canon line in general does a good job at rendering color. Nonetheless, would have been nice to see 1080p at 60fps:).
@patrickfitzgerald28618 жыл бұрын
I apologize if I mentioned this before, but I strongly suspect that Canon is including a firmware correction for their low-pass filter sharpness problems in those STM lenses, and not telling us. People are reporting "L" lens results from the STM 55-250, and that just makes no sense for a $300 lens otherwise. If this is so, they should release it to everyone, but with Canon I wouldn't hold my breath. My D5500 is on it's way, along with a Sigma 17- 50 f/2.8.
@RealWorld8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the additional feedback:). Curious to see if/when Canon will address the AA filter. I also suspect a firmware update could resolve the auto ISO cap I discovered/mentioned (this should extend to the max native ISO IMO). Enjoy the D5500 and nice choice on the lens!:)
@patrickfitzgerald28618 жыл бұрын
Here's a little snippet from the Canon Web site: Low-pass filter effect cancellation For photographers wanting the ultimate in high resolution capture, the EOS 5DS R camera has a low-pass filter* (LPF) effect cancellation. While a low-pass filter is useful to reduce color artifacts and moiré typical with digital capture, it also reduces detail at the pixel level. With the LPF disabled, the EOS 5DS R takes full advantage of the original resolving power of the camera's 50.6 Megapixel sensor. More detail is captured and retained in the original image, perfect for landscape and commercial applications where pixel-level detail is scrutinized and when the sharpest possible image is needed. So what about the rest of us Canon?
@RealWorld8 жыл бұрын
Nice find:) ... Canon sees the benefit and now they just need to remove it on rest of they line:).

I've been looking into buying a first DSLR camera so i can shoot videos of nature from night to day and I would like to know if you think this camera has enough battery life to shoot for more than 12+ hours?
@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I have shot a full day of photos on one battery but this will depend upon the usage. If you wanted to leave the camera on a record video most of the time - no, the battery will definitely not last:). You can always purchase extra batteries to keep with you though.

I have the choice to either buy the 750d for €400 or the 70d for €525. I really want to buy the 50mm STM lens as well but I can (budget-wise) only do so if I buy the 750d. With what choice do you think I will be better off?
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/question:). Many photographers will say to put your money in glass (lenses). Bodies will change but lenses will stay with you (for the most part). If there was a drastic difference between the 750d and 70d, I might lean in one direction vs the other. In this case, they are not too far apart in my opinion:). The 750d has a slight edge over the 70d regarding resolution (24mp vs 20mp). The 70d has a edge over the 750d in battery (920 shots vs 440) and faster max shutter (1/8000 vs 1/4000) and a few other items of less importance in my opinion. If given the choice, I might lean towards the 750d and fixed 50mm (great lens):).

I thought you presented a wonderful review of this Canon camera. I do have the Canon EOS Rebel t5 and have been enjoying it a great deal. The only part that I take issue with is that folks have a tendency to label the t5 as a beginners camera. I believe it is far beyond a start up camera as I do with the Canon T6i. Both are very reliable, solid build and produce excellent results. At best I would say that the Canon t6i is squarely between intermediate and advanced levels. I do have both the Canon EF-S 18~55mm IS, II lens and the Canon EF-S 55~250mm IS, II Lens. I am truly impressed with the rapid auto focus on both and also with the awesome IS Image Stabilization system. Thanks again for a very thorough and comprehensive review. Tony.
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback Tony:). You bring up an interesting point ... what is a beginners camera? I would not consider the t5, t6, etc. beginner camera simply because of all the available features. Many photographers might consider the t5, t6, etc. to be an entry level camera which is different than a beginner camera. Entry level simply meaning the first step/line in the world of DSLRs. Entry level cameras are fully capable which why I have created many videos using them. I want people to know they do not need an expensive DSLR to take great shots:).

Hey Real World, I got the T6I for the same price as the D3400. Is this a better buy? Loved your review by the way.!
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Hello Tariq - thank you for the question and feedback!:) Sounds like a great buy on the T6i - nice grab:). The T6i has a few advantages over the D3400 IMO ... the fully articulating screen is a big plus, along with the touch screen and additional focal points (19 vs 11) and built-in mic jack. My one grip would be the AA filter ... I would like to see Canon remove the AA filter. Nonetheless, given the price I think you got a good deal and would stay the course:).

You mentioned in the video that Canon is good at their color rendering, is it the same as Nikon D5300? Honestly, back then I was considering Nikon D5300 but after watching this and other reviews of Canon T6i (also watched some reviews about Nikon D5300 as well) I' am really considering buying this camera instead of Nikon D5300. It's 2019 and is it still good to buy a T6i? Can't go beyond this camera's price range and I really think this one (or Nikon D5300) will satisfy me.
@RealWorld5 жыл бұрын
The T6i is a solid choice. I like Canon's STM lenses for video but might lean towards the d5300 for photos:). Nikon removed the AA filter (this is the anti-aliasing filter which tends to soften images slightly).

I might lean towards the D3300. The T6i has more to offer for video (external mic port, etc.), but Nikon removed the AA filter (anti-aliasing filter which tends to soften images). In addition, the D3300 has a higher ISO which can be nice under relatively dark situations if needed. The T6i is a great all around camera though, and I like Canon's STM lenses:).

I keep coming back to this video, and others of your videos as well. Thanks for your good work. I have this camera, and I have a question about bracketing. I believe when bracketing is set up the camera is supposed to fire off three exposures by holding down the shutter button. But mine doesn’t do that. It will take three bracketed photos, but only with three separate shutter clicks. Not a big deal, but I wonder if I’m doing something wrong. Thanks again.

I've seen some videos where some of the best cellphones take pictures relatively similar in quality as an expensive dslr. Would there be a huge difference in quality comparing the T6i to a Samsung Note 8's camera? Or should I just stick with the Note 8?
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Great question which might be worthy of a video:). In short, yes - there is a significant difference between the two:). The major difference is sensor size. The sensor plays a valuable role is capturing information/details from the given shot. The sensor size in a DSLR vs Note 8 or any smartphone is MUCH larger. This will render a much better shot especially in low light situations. If you are taking a landscape shot is bright light and only plan to share the image via cell phones, etc., the two images might appear similar. Noticeable differences will be seen on portraits when wanting to soften the background or shooting in relatively low light. I will use my cell in a pinch or when I want to take a quick photo to share, etc.

Tried the Nikon D5500 and had the 18-55 lense, but I/we didn't like it. We have been regular Canon users before the Nikon. -That might be one main issue. So we're concidering this camera now (EOS 750D) - The last Canon we had was EOS 600D. - We want the 18-135 stm lense to it. Do you think it's a good buy? tnx for a nice video!
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Hello and thanks for the post/question:). I like the versatility of the 18-135 and the stm feature is great in my opinion. The D5500 is a great camera but I know what you mean ... if you come from the Canon world, it is different (different feel, different menu, etc.):).
@ArntPetterAndersen7 жыл бұрын
Yes... We also concidered the EOS 760D, but it was almost 100$ more than the 750D and I don't really see us needing the LCD display and the scroll wheel option that the EOS 760D has. - So I think we will go for the 750 with the objective mentioned.

$600 for T6i, $500 for D3400.
@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/question Ashu:). The big advantage to the T6i is the screen ... the screen is touch sensitive and fully rotating. In addition, the T6i has an external mic port if you want to leverage a microphone, etc. Both cameras share a similar sensor and resolution which will yield similar image quality, however Nikon removed the AA filter from the D3400 (this is the anti-aliasing filter which tends to soften images (the T6i has it and most photographers prefer to have it removed)). In addition, the D3400 has more than double the battery life (1200 shots vs 440). Both cameras are very good in my opinion. If you are looking to shoot video and have a rotating screen, the T6i wins. If you are mainly looking shoot photos and do not need a rotating screen, save a $100 and go for the D3400 ... just my two cents!:) NOTE: I reviewed the D3400 as well which can be viewed here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYC1eoGFlrGGis0

this is an interesting comparison!:) The D5 MK2 came out in 2009 and the t6i in 2015 but the MK2 is still relevant to some extent in my opinion. Although MK2 is a full sensor camera, I would still lean towards the t6i. The t6i has a higher resolution (24mp vs 21mp) on a smaller sensor which should be yield slightly better results in my opinion. The t6i also has an articulating touch screen and slightly better dynamic range.

Nice video, Great information. what's your opinion about DSLR and mirrorless? which one do you prefer for excellent pictures. Thanks.
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback!:) I have used the Sony a5100 and a6000 (both mirrorless) along with a handful of DSLRs over the years. Mirrorless are interest/capable/powerful cameras in my opinion. The menu system along with the feel is completely different from a traditional DSLR. The biggest challenge is battery life ... if you carry a spare or two, this is not a problem. In addition, I was challenged with the viewfinder on the a6000 (same holds true for most mirrorless cameras). Since mirrorless cameras do not have a mirror to reflect subjects through the lens, they must us a digital display of some sort. If you are new to the world of photographer, this may not be a big deal. If you come from the world of mirrored cameras, you will find this a bit odd ... not to say this is bad, just different/odd:). One big benefit to mirrorless cameras is size ... mirrorless cameras are just as capable as their mirrored counterparts only in a smaller form factor which can be nice. I recently climbed a mountain with my older Nikon D7000 ... a beast of a body which is weather sealed but relatively heavy to carry a looooong way in my opinion:). Nonetheless, I do like the Sony a6000, a6300, and a6500 although they can overheat when shooting long contineous video clips:).

Great job with the video! Got a question, I'm stuck! So I'm new to DSLR and I narrowed it down to Nikon D5300 and Canon Rebel T6i I just don't know which one to buy. I'll be using it mostly outside for nature, wildlife, and family events. Mostly taking pictures but I maybe doing videos in the near future. Can you help me decide?
@RealWorld6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback Mark and glad to be of help!:) In this case, I would might lean towards the the D5300 if more focused on photos and towards the T6i if more focused on video. This is not to say the D5300 cannot shoot video nor the T6i cannot shoot photos:). If you plan to shoot any video with the D5300, check to see if the included lens is AF-P. AF-P is Nikon's silent focus system which is somewhat comparable to Canon's STM. If you have the AF-S version, you can still shoot video but the auto focus will hunt and hunt and hunt to lock focus:). Canon's STM lens is great/solid at focusing in my opinion (quick and quiet:)). Nikon removed the AA filter which tends to sharpen images more (AA filter is the anti-aliasing filter). The D5300 has a slightly better battery and built-in time lapse. If you have plans to shoot some video and do not have the AF-P lens, go for the T6i:).

Thanks for the post!:) I would recommend Aperture priority. There is a time and place for manual, but I find Aperture for still images works best (moving subjects are a different story). When in Aperture mode, open it wide (use the lowest possible number) to gain a nice background blur, or leave it narrow (using a high number) to gain more background focus.

Both are solid but I might lean towards the T6i if planning to shoot video and lean towards the D3400 if video is not much of a concern. Thanks for the post/question:). In my opinion - yes although I might consider keeping the 50mm f/1.8 as this will work with the D750 as well. The D750 ( amzn.to/2UdtL1G ) is a great/solid full frame camera which has a handful of advantages over the D700 (double the resolution, higher max ISO, rotating screen, better battery, etc.).

@@BobLee333 Ahhhhhh LOL - wow, okay I was a bit off!:) Nikon makes a D750 and Canon's international model for the T6i is 750D ... gotcha:). Yes, I might still lean towards the T6i:). The T6i was released on 2015 and has a nice rotating touch screen along with the ability to leverage STM lenses from Canon which are great for AF in video. Brace yourself for a different feel though:). The D700 is a heavy tank of a camera whereas the T6i is a much lighter camera. Hey.. thanks for great video.. please help - Need your advice - am confused - whether to invest bit more n grab a full frame Canon 6D or image quality of APSC is not that different from FFrame - so go for Canon 800D ?? (remote capture is my priority..so cant go with Nikon)
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post/feedback/question:). Nikon can remote capture with the right camera (i.e. Nikon D500, etc.). Nonetheless, the difference between a crop and full sensor is always an interesting discussion:). I have shot with both and appreciate the detail capabilities of the full sensor, but it is truly needed? By most users - no in my opinion. People rarely print anymore which means most images are shared with jpegs at relatively low res after post processing. Think about all the images that are shared throughout the web. I feel the polish/creative flow is added in post processing. Another thought is this ... you can go with a crop body and full glass (which works fine). If you upgrade to a full body down the road, you can use the same glass. Ultimately, the goal is get away from full auto and take full advantage of all features offered regardless of crop or full. In addition, regardless of crop or full, camera gear tends to retain value which is good if you want to sell/upgrade down the road:). Hope this helps!:)

RealWorld But even seeing pics via hashtag search of camera models on Instagram or Flickr etc, I found huge difference in quality of fframe models like canon 6d Nikon 750 vs crop.. Didn't want to buy crop, then after month start regretting missed quality
@RealWorld7 жыл бұрын
I know the feeling and you are doing the right thing by thinking ahead:). Nonetheless, I suspect many of those photos are edited in post processing to some extent (I do the same). If more people understood the power of post processing, I suspect the camera type would become less important. Nonetheless, a full frame is a great choice but understand that a resulting cool/unique shot is not necessarily caused by the camera rather the resulting cool/unique shot is caused by the photographer's ability to compose image and use the camera (and post process:)).
