I'm curious you mention Canon's poor battery specs for these cameras after using them yourself for several weeks. I have the vertical battery grip, which I attached to the camera the day I bought it. On my very first time using the camera I visited a huge annual festival and shot 2936 images with the battery indicator only dropping one notch. It was in the same position after transferring all those images via USB lead to my laptop. Why do reviewers never mention these important facts? There is no way known these cameras only get 440 shots on a single charge of one battery. I got 2936 on 2 batteries with tons of charge to spare. I was walking around for 5hrs with the camera left on, but admittedly it kept falling into standby mode.

In your recommendation of the Nikon D5500 you failed to mention that the Nikon does not provide a live view of exposure setting changes as well as the default exposure settings displayed in live view. The Canon not only displays many more settings in live view but it also displays the results of your setting changes in live view. I think for most beginners this is a significant feature difference in the Canons favor. I have a Canon T2i and after several weeks of reading and viewing reviews of several cameras I am excited to upgrade to the Canon T6s with the 18-135mm kit lens. Nice review. Thanks!

@TalesOfWar9 жыл бұрын
133faceman It's hard to go wrong with any mid level "entry" camera these days. The best way to choose is ecosystem support. The body may be amazing, but if there are very few lenses and other accessories available (or at good prices) then you may find yourself regretting things. Sony make some amazing cameras and have been knocking the ball out of the park lately, but their lens selection is still rather small and very expensive compared to the Nikon and Canon side of things. Time will obviously fix this and you can get adapters if needs be. Just think bigger picture (no pun intended lol) before jumping in, but like I said it's hard to go wrong these days.

***** The Canon 35mm f/2 is a nice lens for video work. Even the 50mm f/1.8 can be useful if you will be on a tripod- all depends on how much room you have to work with and if you want AF or will be manual focusing.

For someone looking to get into video it's probably a good idea to wait for the Panasonic G7. It looks like its gonna be a great entry level video dslm, offers 4k, Mic input, swivel display (great for youtubers etc), sharper video than canon and sony (even 1080p is sharper), great battery life that panasonic is known for. And for photographers Sony is the better choice (A6000, as you've said). So the Canon only really is an option for people that already own Canon lenses. Everyone else is better of with Sony or Panasonic.
@hydroop9 жыл бұрын
Christos5120 True, no touchscreen. But thats not really a necessity. The D5500 video mode doesnt even allow you to change aperture in live view. But then again, the A6000 is not a true video camera since it does not have a mic input or a swivel screen. Thats why i'd go for the Panasonic for video and the Sony for stills. I hope that Panasonic uses a better sensor on their next top dslm (GH5), because their lowlight performance is lacking.. 16MP on a M43 Sensor should perform just as good as 24MP on an APSC Sensor. The D5500 is alot bigger than the A6000 even though they both feature the same (or at least a very similar) sensor. The Sony might not have a touchscreen, but on the other hand: it allows you to use cheap manual lenses (like M42, C-Mount, basically anything). Theres pros and cons to both, but the Sony is just so much smaller and gives you the same amount of control and image quality. There is always a trade off :)
@TalesOfWar9 жыл бұрын
killuah Do not underestimate the power of the touch screen for video. It's a genuine game changer. it makes everything about shooting easier and quicker. I could never go back to a system without a touch screen (short of a full on dedicated video camera of course) after using my 70D for video.
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
TalesOfWar How do you use the touch screen for video with your 70D? Touch to focus? What kind of video do you shoot- I am always interested in how people use their cameras.

Midesag I believe the only limitations I meant was the wifi system, you have no control over camera settings and the smaller body and ergonomics might not appeal to everyone.

I am only interested in stills. I was looking at the 70d but I have read it still has a focus problem at 2.8. Any truth to the focus problem? Am thinking T6s would be a nice up grade. I am still using a T2i and have several canon lenses, so would like to stay with canon for that reason.
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Lynne Some 70Ds have focus issues with center point. It seems that very few still have the issue and it is correctable. 70D also provides microfocus adjustments for correcting most focusing issues with lenses. T6s does not provide that.

Hey, some people are saying that actually the t5i records video at a higher bitrate than the t6i and t6s... could you explain that to me?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Rolando Vargas Don't worry about this. The important thing is the T6i and T6s video looks a little better, especially in low light. The bit rate doesn't matter and videos where people are talking about this without actually having shot with the camera should be ignored :)

Curious as to what makes the battery life poor on the rebel line. I have a 70d and it is more battery life than I ever need and much better than mirrorless alternatives. Isn't that one of the advantages of DSLRs compared to mirrorless systems?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Chris Cochrane Are you asking why I said the battery life is poor or what causes the poor battery life? I said poor because T6s gives you less than 1/2 of what you get with the 70D. I believe because smaller batteries and all the focusing during live view. Typically I have said a big advantage of DSLRs is battery life but here we have a DSLR that gets only 20 more shots than the a6000. And the a6000 I can at least charge from a USB battery.
@06wv9 жыл бұрын
Yes asking what makes it poor. Not why you said it. I always assumed the rebel line had similar battery life to the 70d. That is certainly a negative for the t6s
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Chris Cochrane The smaller batteries the decided to use and live view focusing combine to draw the power. I hope to do some tests, if you limit live view focusing and use of live view in general I bet you can get more shots but then you aren't really using the cameras best features.
@rolandov29 жыл бұрын
Can you do a comparison between the t6s and 70d specially on af and video?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Rolando Vargas I am working on it. For video 70D is still clear winner in AF. For regular shooting through the viewfinder they are basically identical in speed and performance.
@ElectroPig9 жыл бұрын
You forgot to add the fact that the battery life problem could be "partially remedied" by the use of a battery grip, which holds two batteries, as well as giving the shooter the option to use 6 AA batteries "in emergency situations", as well as providing a second set of controls that make life a LOT easier when shooting in portrait. Of course, I'd wait for the battery grip to go on sale, as most people will find it difficult to justify the ~$250.00 price tag. Thanks for the update...I was QUITE annoyed to hear about the T6S's release not two weeks after finally breaking down and snagging the T5i...but at least now I've got more information on it...so I'll likely hold off on an upgrade for the next major model bump.
@TalesOfWar9 жыл бұрын
***** Battery grips also make using larger, heavier lenses much easier on these kind of bodies. The Rebel series are quite light and not as well balanced as the higher end stuff like the 70/7/6/5/1D's of the world, so the extra bottom heavy weight makes using bigger lenses less of a strain on your hand. They even help on the the higher end bodies (not the 1D of course, given it has it built into the body itself), it's just a bigger improvement on the Rebel line. Also I'm sure we'll start to see third party options rather soon.
@ElectroPig9 жыл бұрын
TalesOfWar Yes...I was absolutely shocked to see the difference in price between the OEM and the aftermarket grips! Been out of it for quite a while...but damn! d=^o
@TalesOfWar9 жыл бұрын
***** Third party grips are hard to go wrong with (relatively, there are a number of abysmally made ones so caution is advised!) given the price difference. I'd always go first party on the higher end bodies though. The last thing I want is a third party grip shorting out my $1300 body lol. It sucks even if its a $500-600 one too but a little easier to swallow the replacement cost haha.

@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
fetzinger10 It is the same viewfinder. I completely hear you - while a lens is a better investment it doesn't always have that fun feel that a new body and the new features that come along with it provide.

fetzinger10 If you're itching to upgrade, I'd either spend it on new glass or get a 70D. Just skip this, it's a genuine upgrade in pretty much every way. You feel where the extra money went too the second you first pick it up. Having all your controls more easily accessible is also a major plus.

I think not having higher frame rate video capture is to distinguish their DSLR range from their dedicated video camera range. Something people often overlook when comparing Canon and Nikon is that Nikon don't really make video cameras, so they put more of these kind of features into their DSLR's whereas Canon make damn near any kind of camera you can think of up to and including movie cameras. I think Sony would be the only other company that has the same kind of product overlap as Canon when it comes to big brand camera makers (and let's not forget Sony make the sensors in most other cameras, Canon make everything in house).
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
TalesOfWar I totally get the need to differentiate but really - 60p wouldn't kill their cinema line - those cameras have bigger sensors and a host of additional features. It is a good point that Nikon has nothing in the Cinema realm, something I hadn't really thought about.

What are you shooting that takes over 1/4000th of a second? I've never had to go above 1/2000th, even for F1 photography.

Jacob Avner No, it's not about capturing fast moving subjects. It is about being able to shoot with wide open lenses in bright conditions. When shooting weddings I often want to shoot around f/2.8 for nice backgrounds and in bright sun my shutter speed is over 1/4000 of a second.

Jacob Avner Try shooting a bright day at f/1.4 at 1/4000 even at 100 ISO. You'll wish you either had a faster shutter or that you packed your ND filters lol. It really depends what you're shooting though.

PhotoRec Toby Oh. I don't have any real fast lenses like that, so I didn't have any experience with that

Hi Toby, did you notice any white dot pattern when shooting white background @ f11 to f16, it is claimed by lensrentals.com that it is having a sensor.Just wanted to hear it from you.

Akash J No, mine does not have the sensor spots.

PhotoRec Toby hi which Camera do you recommend for Bird & portrait Photography?? T6S or 70D?? And should i save few bucks by buying T6s and invest it in lens instead of buying 70D ?? what do you recommend?? confused😰😨😰😰

Hi Toby, can u tell us something abt. the focusing issue of the 70D? This camera is in the price range of the 760d, but I hav not yet decided, which one to buy.

Rolly Berger A few 70D cameras seem to have issues with center point focus. It is fixable by Canon and the number of cameras impacted seems fairly small. Take a look at my side by side comparison here photorec.tv/2015/04/t6s-vs-t6i-vs-70d/

I loved this video, answered all of my questions and compared with similar cameras without me having to do so much research, thank you for taking the time! :) how would you say it handles high ISO? I own a t3, and she has been giving way recently. I could only go up to about 800 ISO before the grain became unforgivable, how would you say the t6s handles?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
Jessica Musick T6s will give you noticeably better results in low light. I am happy to shoot 1600 and even 3200 with careful exposure.

I have a canon sl1 right now. Is this worth the upgrade? Or should I invest in a lens?

+Photorec Toby Hello Toby !! I've seen your video regarding 70D's center focus point issue where you're getting soft images on higher aperture through viewfinder.Usually higher than f2.8. It's something which is preventing me from going for 70D. Any update on that issue ? Or should i get a T6s ?
@photorectoby9 жыл бұрын
+Rishabh Rai Have not heard that any recent 70Ds suffer from the issue.

Whatever advantages you introduced to 70D over 760D I still wonder why Canon brings the 760D so close to 70D if they are cameras of 2 different worlds? btw I owe 70D that is why it makes me angry;)

Should i buy 760d or d5300? I'll be adding tokina 11-16, tamron 17-50, 50mm 1.8

soumyajit paul Do you want the smooth AF in video that the Canon provides? If not - get the Nikon D5300.
