I"m quite happy with my Canon cameras and lenses, but I'll echo what other folks have commented here: It's perfectly normal to be loyal to a particular brand, but my feeling has always been, as long as the camera you're using does the job for you, that's the only thing that matters.

The reason there is loyalty to a brand is because their equipment is reliable and their line of glass is impeccable. that's why there such loyal following with Canon as before with Nikon.

Since the launch of A7iii in 2018 and the introduction of third-party zoom lenses like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen, handling, IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without many firmware updates), and less well-rounded (more and more product lines).

The best camera is the one you have in your hands. :) We live in a time where any of the major brands produce stellar equipment. I've shot Canon, Nikon, and I'm on Sony now. All three have been great and all three have had minor issues. It comes down to your shooting style and needs IMO. Of the three brands I still love the color of Nikon over Canon/Sony. That being said, some post work does the trick. Ergonomics, Canon or Nikon over Sony for me. The A1 is almost there but not nearly as comfortable as a Nikon/Canon. When it comes to tracking/speed/image capture... the A1 has been stellar and leaps and bounds over the previous brands/models I've owned. Nice video... I agree with many of your points. Brands are often about feelings. I had a 5dsr who was considered a studiocamera, but I shot everything with it. Out in the Snow -20 degrees, nights, streets..portraits. It was good for a lot of things. Thats why I went from sony a7r IV to canon r5 and their most known zooms. Leaving two a7rIVS and a lot of primes. The R5 is good, but I noticed it struggled with focus in low light. Shooting the aurora I often had to go to manual. Not an issue with sony at all. Canon are expencive, bulky and big and heavy to drag around in the wild. The Sony feels better in the hand. I like the canon but I waited for ages for them to come out with new lenses..primes..and eventually I gave up and bought into two A7rVs instead, starting to build up with primes and zooms. Its not recommended switching so much as its expencive. But now I have found the right gear for me, finally satisfied. All in all, the brand does not matter that much, both Canon and Sony are good. You just have to find out what is best for you.

I started out with Sony mirrorless in early 2013 with my photography journey. Went to Nikon for the old school Nikon lenses and ergonomics, but left Nikon when their mirrorless AF and features lagged behind the rest. I went to Canon now with R6 and RF lenses and I'm incredibly happy. Why not Sony? I don't need a million lenses, especially third party. I prefer first party lenses for assured QC and reliability and performance. The RF35 and RFR70-200 are more than good enough for me, and for the price they are fair and I don't see a good cheap 35mm option for Sony. The RF35 is incredibly sharp, has amazing IBIS, is compact and cheap. Also, Canon has better IBIS, ergonomics, low light performance on R6, and repair customer service. Colors start to shift and contrast is lost on high ISO for A7 IV, but R6 looks incredibly well in really high ISO for hobby purposes. The Sony A7 IV would be my second choice, but I am happy with the R6 and RF lenses. Fuji? The build quality was terrible with the XS10 and XT30 I had and the AF is worse that point and shoots from 15 years ago. They felt like toys

At this time... if anyone still arguing which is better.. is just clueless and gear folks more than actual photographer or someone who love taking photos. Any brand makes good camera now or at least gear that can produce picture.. it is up to the user whether they know how to use a camera or which is more comfortable brand for them if that matters. Also to add... now post process is a big part of whether the final photo is nice or amazing. If you cant or not good at that.. doesnt matter Canon or sony or any brand.. photo will just be alright but not good/great.
@Eikenhorst Жыл бұрын
Nikons Z mount is technically not completely closed off to third party lenses, but the third party options for Z mount is extremely limited, and you pay a premium vs the E-mount for the same lens. What I don't like about the E-mount is the lack of any lenses wider than 16mm that takes filters. Nikon and Canon have a 14mm that takes filters, but I feel the E-mount is just too small to build such a lens.

Let’s face it. Both systems are incredible. Nikon, too. Even Fuji is very impressive if you don’t need FF. For me it comes down to lens choices, prices and investments. I’ve invested in Sony lenses and, therefore, don’t change now. Go with whatever camera system feels good for you and is affordable for you. You cannot go “wrong“ these days. The cameras now are better than the cameras we had ten years ago in almost every aspect. My advice: Get a solid body, learn how to use it properly and then invest in lenses rather than camera bodies. Much more value over time. And you will be able to take full advantage of your camera. Lastly, get out there and shoot!

But I second-guessed myself so I rented the Canon R5 and the 85 mm f1.2 RF lens and even though it took beautiful photos I really like the menu for the Sony and the natural colors Sony produced. I like how the feel and size of the Sony cameras even though I have size 4 XL hands I just preferred the Sony. But I wish Sony would produce an 85 mm f1.2 like the Canon lens. That is a remarkable lens. But since I upgraded to the a7rv the evf is beautiful and the flip out screen is perfect. And once you use the a7rv and the 135mm GM for portraits you will be a believer. I am not brand loyal either so whatever gets the job done the best and the easiest is what I prefer and Sony is doing it for me.

The short answer is, both brands produce good images, at least in the flagship models anyhow, eg, the A1, the R5 and R3. Both brands have good glass available - it doesnt matter who makes the glass. Both brands have similar high iso performance per pixel area. I personally found the A1 too small for my hands, but the a1 will be perfect for others. The biggest differentiator is; Sonys 46mm mount vs Canon (and Nikon) 52mm mount. One of my favorite lenses in my Samyang 10mm rectilinear EF mount, adapted to my R5. 10mm is wide, truly wide, and, where it is needed there is no substiure. Straightening a 8mm fisheye gives very soft corners, and, once cropped rectangular, is 10-11mm or wider anyhow. Sonys 46mm will vignette a 10mm rectilinear, and thus, is a deal breaker for me. Sony really needs to update their mount to 52mm. Canons new 10-20mm F4 rectilinear looks to be a winner for UWA enthusiasts, and realestate. Sony or others could not release this type of lens for the Sony 46mm mount - it would vignette at the wide end. All the rest of the arguments & comments are just noise. There is only one real show stopping limitation, and that is the small 46mm mount size. Btw, can you take a selfie still or vlog, whilst composing your self with a Sony ? No. The screen doesnt fold around like Canons. 2nd deal breaker for me.

I'm a new-ish photographer and love my R6 for portraits, sports, or wildlife. Where it fails, for me, is the subject detection. When using servo AF with tracking it is always trying to hunt for subjects and won't let the focus box "stick" on whatever I initially focused on (if it isn't one of the recognized subjects). This means that I'm always having to switch to a single focus point without tracking, resulting in lost shots and more time spent composing. This is infuriating to the point of making me want to switch. Other brands do better (OM System, Fuji), and I'm curious to try Sony to see if the tracking works like I'd like it to.
@Pierretlambert Жыл бұрын
For me it sticks well on Sony but what conditions do you usually lose the tracking in?
@rumrill5020 Жыл бұрын
@@Pierretlambert It could be due to my beginner's reliance on tracking AF, but I'd like to be able to focus on a particular inanimate object in a landscape or in a street scene while using C-AF and have the camera hold focus while I recompose. Fuji and OM System cameras seem to do better, but my R6 will hunt all over the place no matter the subject detection mode. It also loves to expand the tracking area (even if the smallest focus box is enabled) such that I have no idea where it is focusing, especially with larger apertures. I should really just get better at using S-AF and moving the point around. Thanks for your videos, by the way, I quite enjoy them.

Fast forward a few years and I am 100% satisfied with the Sony platform. I can use best in class optics from Sony directly or choose other great lenses from Zeiss, Voigtlander, Sigma, Tamron, Samyang, etc.. I have a Sony Zv-1 which I've been using for videos mostly and I love it. I'm thinking about adding a Sony A6- A7 since the photos are used in my car magazine which is getting more eyes daily. Plus, I think mirrorless is easier to learn

It’s the same you can use sigma lenses with an adapter, same as old EF lenses you can use them with an adapter on mirrorless don’t really understand the pint on this one ?

I’ve been shooting film since the 70’s. The only film cameras I have left are Canon and Olympus. I started my digital photography with Canon, then Fuji and Olympus and now I’ve settled on Sony. I still have my Olympus E-M1 mkii, which I just love and will probably never get rid of because it fits my hand really well and the image quality is very good. Same with the Sony A7 series. Sony fits my hand very well and is comfortable to carry. All of the digital cameras I have owned have very good image quality and I’d shoot any of them again. It’s not the camera, it’s the operator.

I've used Nikon and Canon for years and now I am in Sony camp. Sad to say but there is no more camera wars. In mirrorless world Sony is years ahead generally as system. Smaller and lighter lenses, beautiful color rendition and DR, sensor tech, third party lens, best video codec, best camera body customization in the market... It is game over.

@@lesson.3012 no it's not. Sony is started with milc technology development couple of years before Canon and Nikon. At the same time Sony is in technology development company with greatest potential so the conclusion can be made very simply.

@DuskoJovic Жыл бұрын
@@nordic5490 ye ye... We've been hearing the same story for years from some "experts" that Sony can't make f1.2 lenses because the mount is too small for a full-frame mirrorless system. Now, on the same mount, we have the smallest, fastest, lightest, and optically best 50mm f1.2 lens. Let's ignore these stories about what can or can't be done because we don't have enough of technical knowledge for that. We photographers should use this equipment and share our experiences, leaving the technicals and predictions job to the engineers. It's truly incredible that anyone could even think that the financially, technologically, and research-wise most powerful company in the world would let itself be limited by a mount that doesn't allow them to create everything they want in the technology we have now. Canon RF is currently worst system on the FF market. First, they have worst sensor of all FF brands. Second, they have worst lens choice on the market... You tellin me about 10-40 and 8mm fisheye and your system dont have any of f1.4 primes which are pro standars for years. And third... They forcingly keep trapped all their users in a closed system for any other third party lens. Things cant be worser. But hey if you are fine to be in system like that I am finewith that to. :)

I've been using the Nikon D3200 for almost a decade and in 2023, still don't have any problem with the image quality. but Nikon doesn't care about budget lenses for amateurs and hobby photographers and also I need to Invest in a system to support my vlogging and astrophotography activities at a good level for the price. Sony is amazing in these roles but still a little expensive for me, but Canon is not compatible with third-party optics. so I guess Sony is a reasonable choice for me, because I need to buy just 2 bodies and optics are more important when it comes to price. Thank you for these details bro! ♥
@Kazoom28 Жыл бұрын
If you already have a Sony or Canon system and are still here watching to decide whether to switch to either then your "Focus" is in the wrong place. Or shall I say you are spending too much time studying the capabilities of the cameras rather than learning how to shoot well! The tools are only as good as the user. Don't just blame your tools! I am using Sony and when my shots did not come out well, I ask myself what I did wrong and not why the camera is not producing good shots!

I've never understodd the argument about lens selection. How many lenses does a working photographer use? I shot events and I use two lenses, an RF 28-70 and an EF 70-200. Sometimes I use an EF 85 for portrait work. That's it. I think it matters very little if Sony or Canon or Nikon has a larger lens selection. All the brands have the lenses you need. Yes, RF lenses are pricey, but if you're working, an RF lens is a great investment.
@adamadamis Жыл бұрын
And if you don't want to spend loads of money for the RF offering, have you at least got an alternative? And if you want a 35-150 f2-2.8? Or rather have a 20-70 instead of a 24-105?

Finally a race for performance after a decade of stalemate competition between Canon and Nikon. Both competitors, Canon and Sony, now making great gear but as a student and practitioner of marketing strategy one may expect one of these two to emerge dominant in the war for market share. Historically the winner emerges with twice the share of #2 and number two to have twice that of #3. Time will tell if this academic model proves true. I shoot Sony not because of better cameras but because of the huge savings from third party glass and my lenses are Sigma, Tamron and Sony G-Master but mostly Sigma and Tamron.

Why would you throw away the batteries when changing the camera? They go with the old camera to the new owner 🤷♂ It also makes sense to upgrade the batteries. It's not as if the R6 has different batteries to the R5 of the same generation.

Have been a Canon user for about 18 years. I am not a "professional" photographer but want to upgrade for better optics (not overly concerned about video because I am not a videographer and really don't want to pay more for "all these video features" (which Sony seems to dwell on). Would like to go mirrorless but if I understand correctly, it seems Canon has "shot itself in the foot" by changing the lens mount to RF on their mirrorless cameras, making it near impossible to use any of my numerous Canon lenses. If this is true - if I can't use any of my numerous Canon DSLR lenses on any of their top rated mirrorless cameras then I might as well kiss Canon goodby and go with Sony. Is there any compromise? Does Canon make any top rated optics (equal to, say the Sony and in any of their mirrorless cameras that accept the Canon EF mount? Bottom line after watching your entire video. You speak in "generalities" so basically, I learned nothing. Sorry.
