Love that you have "discovered" this new paper. I do have some stock of Pastel Mat-BUT I already have 3 pads of the new Canson TOO!!! I could NOT resist-NO I Do Not Need The Canson-BUT I WANT IT!!!LOL! Jason you should know by now what a bunch of hoarders are in your group-no-I don't NEED more pastels, or any art supplies for like another 25 years-but I don't let that hold me back from dieting so I can have more supplies!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thanks Jason. Would love to see how the paper holds up to watercolor and/or gouache underlayers. I have a ton of Pastelmat to use up before I can justify getting any. Plus it's not here in the US yet but love the idea of this new alternative.

Thank you Jason for another great video, and for you very practical advice! I do have a good stock of Pastelmat, and don’t want to give up on it just yet, so I’ll wait for the Canson to become more available.

Thanks for this video. I am anxious to try this new Canson Velvet. I am in the US so it’s going to be a while before I can get my hands on some. My only problem with PM is their quality seems to waiver. I noticed quite a few inconsistent areas on some of the last batch of PM that I bought. Your work is beautiful and I love your little squirrel.
@wildlifeartjm2 ай бұрын
yep consistency is the pastelmat problem for sure - this new paper should be in USA in about 3 weeks - watch my channels for more details

I guess my thing is everyone was in love with "PM" not that long ago, even openly recommending it. If a paper works well for you, your style, and your price range, then continue to feel good about using it. What one person loves or dislikes may not be what your going to dislike or love.
@wildlifeartjm2 ай бұрын
as I mention in the video - I still love pastelmat - what I dont like is all the faults that are being seen so frequently in the quality - its an expensive paper to throw in the trash.

Thank you, Jason, for this information. Have you heard about any issues with Canson Velvet not being entirely acid-free? I've heard some reports that Velvet is not acid-free on the front of the paper, of all things! I find this hard to believe. I know there have been questions about UArt not being acid-free on the back, but the front? It doesn't make sense to me that a well-known, respected manufacturer like Canson would put out artist grade paper that isn't completely acid-free. Just thought you might have heard something about this. Also, for the other coloured pencils artists here like me, I was told by another artist that she felt that coloured pencils didn't perform as well on Velvet as it does on Pastelmat. Now, that's just one opinion. I'll make my own judgement on that, if I can ever get ahold of any Velvet!
@warpedweft90042 ай бұрын
It would be nice if we could actually buy it. I have enough trouble trying to buy Strathmore's 400 series for coloured pencil work, let alone Canson velvet. 300 is available, but anything better than that is hard to get, even in Sydney. These things rarely appear in Australia and the postage costs for paper products is as much, if not more, than the item itself if bought from the USA or Europe. I imagine if it ever becomes available, the cost is going to be so prohibitive here that hobbyists still won't be able to buy it. As it is Pastelmat is incredibly expensive and I'm not prepared to buy something that costly only to discover it is faulty and thus useless. Sadly, Australia seems to be the world's dumping ground for faulty and/or outmoded goods, sold at incredibly inflated prices.

Maybe you could become a distributor?
@warpedweft90042 ай бұрын
@@Victoria-c4n nice idea but you have to have an ABN, be registered as a business and set up for collecting and submitting GST. Then you need the capital to buy stock, know your way around the rules and set up for importing it. It's really not viable for a single entity to do for a single product. It's really only something an established business who already imports similar products can do, not a single retired person on a fixed income.

Thank you Jason for this comparrison, but how do you feel the price compares? I like the many size options pastelmat offer but it is expensive isn't it.
@wildlifeartjm2 ай бұрын
both are expensive, but although they are a paper they have a complicated production process, which is why there is only 2 like it so far. So if we are spending lots on pencils etc we should also make sure the actual substrate is the best it can be - the paper is more important than the pencils etc to get the technique to work. I hope prices can reduce on both
@Bonnie10au2 ай бұрын
Has anybody tried OMS or Zest it on the new paper? I hate that this stuff bleeds on Pastelmat and I would like to know if the Canson handles it better.

Hi Jason! I saw in one of your KZbin videos that you recommended ice matte paper to print reference pictures ,I haven’t seen a seller online that sells it,i live in the USA ,I saw that they sell it in amazon, but in the uk. What other matte paper would you recommend?
@wildlifeartjm2 ай бұрын
just get one that says photo quality inkjet
@juliacastro89282 ай бұрын
Also,what matters the most to get nice reference photos from a printer,the paper or the ink used? I think I heard you said in the video,the paper,not sure if I heard this right.

I'm curious about why you didn't use panpastel for the under painting. I'm new and trying to learn, I would have thought panpastel would be easy. Another question... it looks like you're drawing with the paper laying on a table rather than up at an angle on an easel. I have a table easel and I'm wondering if there'd be a lot of dust and crumbles dropping down across the paper if the paper isn't laying flat.

Hi I am drawing at approc 60 degree angle on a magnetic whiteboard. IN my lessons I show how to use all supplies like Pans, Sticks and pastel pencils so people dont have to buy things like Pans if they dont have th emoney and can still do my lessons. I could have used pans for the underlayer ion this lesson.

Do you think the Velvet looks a little more grainy on the finer details? And can you get very fine lines? Do lighter colors (especially fine details) go over darker colors as easily as with Pastelmat?
