There's probably not many DVD drive mechs still being made. Similarly most CD mechs now seem to be Chinese Sanyo SF-P101N clones. I've bought several of these CD mechs from Ali Express for around £6 each, surprisingly, they work perfectly.

Same but different, most of these TV's with built-in DVD drives probably come from the same factory and all used the same mechansims with different boards depending on the brand and features required. Saves trying to find a direct replacement.

What’s this crazy new technology, dvd? I still have a Laserdisc player from 1993.

Ah, playing mix 'n match. Lost count of the number of times I have done that over the years in order to get something working when the complete required part wasn't available. Swapping boards and connectors and cables and anything else needed. Probably a 98% success rate. Didn't always work but it got me out of a bind most of the time.

Great one Michael. Are these actually worth fixing, or of sentimental value
@michaeldranfield714028 күн бұрын
not worth fixing if you can find a brand new drive of the correct one as average price is about £35 for a drive .

I wonder if the DL stands for dual layer!

Wouldn't be the first time I've been back against the wall resorting to this sort of repair, very good tip.

DL = Disc Loader most likely.

I don't know if you've already come to that conclusion but those boards you're swapping are actually whole DVD players. Their video output can be composite video and/or YPbPr and the audio outputs are usually front left and front right channels, some have also coaxial S/PDIF but I don't think there's any with outputs for a subwoofer and rear channels. I think all of them have one pin for standby/power and other for the signal from the remote control. Some have more or less pins for more or less buttons for the typical player functions (Play, Pause, Stop, Eject/etc.) Others have also pins for a USB connector and even for a SD card socket. The problem is that each one is programmed for a different remote control, otherwise it should be easy to adapt most of them for other TV models. I'm not a TV repairman or an expert in electronics at all, I just try to find info everywhere to try to fix my own devices and sometimes I fix them and others I only make them release "the magic smoke" 😅 I purchased a very cheap second hand 24" TV branded as i-Joy I think but of course it was made by Vestel and it had one of those DVD drives, it was faulty and I looked how it was made but since I didn't need a TV with a built-in DVD player I didn't try to get any spare drive.

I use an external 2.5" laptop hard drive plugged into my usb port ( via an adapter) on my phillips tv. The tv is a bit temperamental & would like to save my recorded programs onto my P.c, unfortunately its a strange format that my pc will not recognise ( to stop piracy i assume) Has anyone got an idea how i can back up my saved programs on a pc ?
