I work with a Registered Nurse who lived in the triplex with the big fireplace in the late 70’s and early 80’s. I shared this video with her after she told me she lived in Cantil as a teenager. She has pictures of her nieces and nephews sitting on that fireplace.

Cantil was founded as a station on the Nevada and California Railroad in 1908 or 1909 when the line was extended from Owens Lake to Mojave. The name is Spanish for "steep rock", and is one of a series of "C" names chosen for this section of the line including Cambio, Cinco, and Ceneda. The first post office opened in 1916. Parts of scenes of Universal's 1932 horror film The Mummy were filmed here. Cantil is near the home of the Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC), a test track used for testing new car models and motorcycles. Honda closed the test facility in April 2010 and put it up for sale; on December 8, 2015, the company announced that they would renovate and expand the HPCC, with some new vehicle test road enhancements and reopen the facility in April 2016. On October 31, 2014, the Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise crashed in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, killing one of the two pilots.

Pancho Barnes was an aviatrix who broke Amelia Earhardt record and did stunt flying for the movies. She had a fly-in dude ranch known as "The Happy Bottom Riding Academy" located just outside Edwards air force base. It was a bar and grill where test pilots hung out, portrayed in the movie "The Right Stuff". She had a row of rooms out back and employed attractive young hostesses. The air force tried to shut her down, accusing her of running a house of ill repute. She sued, but then her place burned down and she moved to Cantil and tried to start the same business. That could have been her place with the row of rooms for her "hostesses". I grew up at Edwards and Lancaster and have been to Cantil, saw Pancho Barnes at the fair and Christmas parade.

I had a friend that used to live out in Cantel. He got tired of shoveling sand so he moved away. Cantel used to be a farming community but for one reason or another they stop farming and the sand off of the Fields gets blown around pretty bad. Also across the road from Cantel used to be the Honda test track.

I love your videos. I also live in Vegas. Friday May 4, 2018 is the 30th anniversary of the Pepcon explosion that took place in Henderson. It was the plant that was part of the Kerr McGee corporation that made rocket fuel for the space shuttle back then. The marshmello factory next to it also was obliterated. Two people died and 300 were injured in the explosion. It was like a mini nuclear blast for Southern Nevada. I think that it would be a great video for you to do at the site. It's located near 215 and 95.

Much of that area was a huge alfalfa farm, and many of those buildings were homes for the farm workers. In the late 70s the water table began to drop, to the point where it was no longer possible to pump it up for irrigation. When the plants died and blew away, the desert reclaimed everything. I remember the whole valley being greened up with alfalfa. Now , most of it covered with solar panels.....

I don't remember the exact years but several hundred acres west of Cantil had been cleared for alfalfa farming. When it failed (30+ years ago?) the dirt was left barren and the prevailing winds completely denuded the surface land.

That is one massive cool ghost town, you could have made parts 1 through 37 at least I think ;-) Summing up what others have said before and what some research told me this was a farming community in the 60s and 70s, but due to bad agricultural techniques the formerly fertile land turned into wasteland. Trivia: There is an album called "Abandoned Cities" by Harold Budd that was released by the label "Cantil" in 1984, this makes me believe that this place must have been abandoned already at that time. At least in parts that is, all that 80s and 90s stuff you found indicates that some people must still have been there later. Maybe when people lived there there was more vegetation like trees and bushes around the houses which would somewhat keep the wind from piling up sand dunes I guess. Using Google maps there are some interesting observations to be made: - Some houses do still have green bushes around, maybe those places are still lived in - On the eastern side there are ponds and green fields, something must still be going on there - There are two compounds with lots of trailers and cars Would be interesting if you told which road it was you explored.
@andyfletcher35616 жыл бұрын
I haven't been out that way since the late 90's. I was a bit surprised to see it this far gone. But it wasn't bad farming techniques. At least not primarily. It was water districts forming and charging them for water. When we got good rains in January/February, and again in the spring, they could get 2 extra crops that they didn't really have to irrigate. When they did irrigate it only cost them the electricity to pump it. Happened all over the area early, mid seventies. LA Dept of Water and Power for the most part. Water districts are like HOAs. Free folk should keep the heck away from them. One of my favorite memories is of days driving through the alfalfa fields east of Palmdale and Lancaster, and out to Rosamond, mid August or so, heat of the day. When you were lucky you hit a mile or two of the sprinklers running close to road and the apparent temperature dropped dramatically. So refreshing, and of course we were kids and it was the seventies. Listening to good old rock and roll on the 4 track tape player. Air conditioning wasn't a thing for most kids in their first cars then. I sure loved to drive... Anyway, it's just off of State Highway 14(The Antelope Valley Freeway) north of Mojave and just before Redrock Canyon. Once upon a time there was at least one sign on the highway.

Cantil was a farming community at one time. In the 60s and 70s there were huge fields of alfalfa. guess something happened to the water source. Wonderhussy, did you stop by Jawbone Canyon? the store was founded by Pancho Barnes of the Right Stuff movie fame.
@andyfletcher35616 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the aqueduct. As well as the proliferation of rural "water districts". They slapped meters on all the farmer's wells, basically. Into the seventies the area grew most of the world's alfalfa then they started charging them for the water. Stopped at Jawbone many times.

I'm inclined to believe these houses were abandoned in the 1970s or maybe early 80s, and the newspapers and magazines were dumped there later. In addition to the 1970s letters, the wallpaper, the carpeting and decorating is all from the 1970s.
