This video is the first time I've ever really understood how important the navigator is. I honestly had no idea how many different aspects they bring to the table, but seeing it and HEARING it, is a big eye opener! These guys are 100% every bit as important as the driver! I never realized that before. I saw them more as a co-driver, maybe a backup, someone to get directions and sure they stay on the right track, maybe telling a little info about the track ahead etc. I had no idea they were that essential. It explains why these drivers can drive all out, all the time, constantly keeping the vehicle at the very top edge if it's performance capability, and still finish the race without being plastered up side of a rock somewhere, or scattered in pieces across a desert floor. These guys are the reason why these drivers can drive like they do. And I see that, it must be vitally important for the driver to be able to fully trust the navigator with their life, and vice versa. Navigators everywhere owe you folks an appreciation, because I've never seen a video that shows their importance like this.

Solo runs would double the length of time of the race, with 50-70% broke from overruning corners. It's near impossible to memorize a 400 mile race and which turn it was that had the big rock that will flip you not to be confused with the one that has a ditch on the outside to roll you over . Closest I've ever done was Sonora,ca to Mariposa,ca on highway 49 it's 60 miles in 60min hundreds of corners some of them triple switchbacks (5_6over crest ; 2_1 190°Left 1_2! 2_1 190°Right 1_2, 2_1 190°L 1_2! 2_1 190°R 1_2,2_1 190°L 1_2, 2_1 190°R 1_2 ) all with in 1mi of road 1\8mi (660'200M)as the crow flys , with 5mph apexes. Not to mention the fact that it was a moonless night about 1am and there's no guardrail between you and the 1000 foot drop or a rockwall on the other. This team should be able to run this section going in blind in 45 or less with the 905 extra hp , race tuned suspension, 4wheel traction . Add codriver and now we're looking at closer to 25-30mim. Instinct is very difficult to outskill enjoy the day.
@mrfixitusa61653 жыл бұрын
@@daviddroescher I appreciate this feedback from an experienced person. I absolutely can believe it would take twice as long, and half still not finish, if there were no co-drivers. This is TRULY a situation where BOTH of them, are controlling that car. I see it now, the co-driver is not just a human GPS nav system, he is the brain, thats telling the drivers hands and feet what to do with the car! And I imagine... it's possibly a good thing in some ways, that it's a moonless night, because you CAN'T see how far that drop-off is, how close you are to death... I imagine that would be more nerve-racking than driving "blind" with a co-driver you trust. I'd love to learn more about that.

I love seeing this and it letting me understand that, when this navigator says "GO GO GO!" He's not just sending encouragement or hype or boosting up the driver's mood etc. He's letting the driver know "okay there's nothing to worry about ahead, you can put the hammer down!" It's obvious because he NEVER says that until the driver has cleared an obstacle, curve, jump etc and the way in front of them is clear enough to really get on it & shove that pedal through the floor. Without that "GO GO GO!" There's no way the driver can know if it's safe over that Hill or when he clears the jump, and he'd have to either eventually wreck or play it safe and back off the pedal. Well that's a navigator there's no way these guys can drive like that on races this long without totaling the vehicle before they cross the finish line. This video is giving me a whole new respect for and Outlook of the navigator.
