For those of you who are new to my channel, I am Chinese American who grew up as a heritage speaker of Mandarin Chinese but also spent some time living in Hong Kong and being exposed to the Cantonese language (# CantoMando speaker :)) While I am not a native speaker of either language, I would say I have the basic grasp of both Canto and Mando. That being said, mistakes will be made, so if you are a native speaker and notice that I say anything wrong please feel to correct me! :) I'm here on KZbin to share my passion for learning languages via language study vlogs and vlogs in different languages such as Cantonese vlogs). I talk about my own language learning journey and share whatever linguistic and cultural curiosities I may find along the way!

Thanks for sharing this with us! I enjoyed it! Personally, I'd like to hear you speak more in Cantonese. I mean, most of us seem more interested in how much better your Cantonese has become. For example, you speak in Cantonese first & have us guess what you've said, and then you translate... Something like that. I dunno, but that can be fun!

Great stuff, Kev. What's the best way to learn Mandarin as an Cantonese speaker?

Thanks! Sooo, I´m actually the other way around (Mandarin heritage speaker learning Cantonese), but I would say the process is similar, if not easier (since there are more Mandarin resources). Generally speaking, I would recommend as a first step just consuming a lot of content in Mandarin (TV shows, KZbinrs, Movies, Music, News, etc). As you become more familiar and comfortable with listening, start to take notes on words you find difficult to "switch" from Cantonese to Mandarin. This could be either due to pronounciation OR a different word usage. You should spend extra time practicing and repeating these words or phrases. Then, from there out, it's just a matter of spending enough time with Mandarin and repeating the process. Hope that helps and good luck!

@LingoKev Hey Kev, I really enjoy your videos. This is going to sound strange, but I'm Mexican American. Like you, my native language is English, although I am 3rd generation living here in the United States. My Great Grandparents are from Mexico, and I speak spanish fluently, although not taught by my parents, but at school (High School and College). I find the Mandarin language very interesting and I want to know what would be the best way to learn Mandarin. I know that Mandarin is your second language and your primary language is English. Do both your parents speak Mandarin? I have a pretty good ear for words and pronunciation, but still would need help. I don't I want to learn how to write the Mandarin language (with all those little squiggly lines, and bars, and cross bars etc.) now that my friend would be hard to learn....lol. Any help that you provide would be much appreciated. Thanks Kev ....... Rick

Hey @rickrangel, thanks for your comment, it means a lot! Both my parents speak mandarin, so I learned both at home and in classes (in saturday school). It's awesome that you are interested in learning Mandarin! If you don't want to learn the characters (which I agree is a lot of work), I would recommend you at least learn pinyin (look it up if you don't know what it is) as that will at least help you with your pronunciation and allow you to take notes about what you learn. Best of luck and happy studying :)

@@lingokev Awesome Kev! I will look into "pinyin". I want to thank you for at least sending or pointing me into some direction in learning the Mandarin language. It seems futile, but I'm determined to learn. I have but a few Chinese friends, of which they speak Mandarin, Cantonese and Shanghainese (or a combination of these) with English being their first language, and they are no help when it comes to me learning the Mandarin language... LOL. All kidding aside, I truly want to thank you Kev. ..... Rick

So if you’re a kid born into a family where one side speaks mandarin and the other speaks Cantonese would you be bilingual? Assuming the parents taught both?
