Thank you for taking the time to explain this game, as I've been wanting to learn for years but there's no friend in my circle who knows how to play it. It is an excellent game for Covid brain fog or dementia preventive care. I don't have a Chinese keyboard or Cantonese typing software, so I can only copy & paste from Google Translate. But I do have a bit of childhood memories of Taoism and I-Ching lessons that I learned from my grandmother to hypothesize why whoever gets the East will get to choose "the best seat." I think it's most likely based on the 五行八卦方位: East on the Ba Gua (八卦) is located on 震 position (方位) that is associated with the Wood element. 震 (shake) = 震動 (shaking movement), which is the beginning of all activities in life in general. East is also associated with the sun/sunrise, on which all plant growth relies. So East also signifies growth and advancement/going forward in life. If the East is located in a "good position" (i.e. depends on the direction in which a home is built/located or where doors/windows are pointing + shape of the room + if there's anything the 通勝 [an almanac/daily divination guide] says to do/not to do for the day), it may help the person "advance" their own intentions/desires to win the game.

Mannn i dont even know what NSEW is in Cantonese...well, hope to learn more Cantonese from u. A little weird I must say, as I am a Chinese Cantonese descendant learning Cantonese from a Caucasian woman. And good thing you have this mahjong tutorial, over the years i tried to learn online and i always gave up (probably i tried to learn on my own and i cannot read Chinese) . Lastly, keep up the good work, your tutorials cater more to non-Cantonese speakers, so it is much easier for us to understand it.

Thank you soooo much!! I'm so glad I can help and yes, tell me about it! I still feel so kinda weird teaching Cantonese when it's not my mother tongue, but I'm really liking it and find that I'm learning so much myself, too, since I can't be lazy anymore and just say whatever. :) Thanks for the encouragement and I'll be getting the next videos up soon!

I know, right? ... Seems nowadays it's all those new tables with the automated shufflers and wall-builders -- and here I am with the old steel box and green-backed tiles. LOL Would love to start a little mahjong group someday and play more regularly ... but it's so hard to find the time, especially when it's 4 people's schedules that need to be coordinated! Hope you found the video useful .... or at least entertaining! :D

Ms. Sue , thanks for this video and can't wait for the next episode. My question is what is the ratio between luck and skills in mahjong? Yes, and what kind of skills are involved in this awesome game.
@CantoneseCorner6 жыл бұрын
Hi Sonny! You're welcome and I'm trying to get the next one edited, but it's soooo time consuming! The whole luck-skill ratio is really interesting -- luck definitely plays a part in what tiles you draw and in some of the choices you'll make during the game, but there is definitely skill involved in knowing what your opponents are up to ... what they're collecting and what you should or shouldn't discard. Also, (and this is something I'm bad at), knowing what combinations are most beneficial to make is key .. like for example, I'll be greedy and 'pong' something to get a three of a kind, when actually if I had been patient, I would have had more chances to make runs (because if you take three of the tiles out to make a 3-of-a-kind, then that leaves only one tile left). Skills involved would be the ability to keep an eye on not only what you're doing, but what your opponents are up to and making decisions accordingly. Also, being ruthless in going for the best combination you can (and not being partial to a certain suit or type of win). Hope that helps! :)

My mother had a box like that in the early 80s, in Hong Kong.
@smartapeproductions21392 жыл бұрын
Ok let me explain how We play We do not first of all take the Fans and multiply it into point values We do however use Hongkong rules with a little spin. Let me explain I usely like to play you must have a min 3 fan to call Majong If you are in WSN and your in East Round you are allowed 2 points or fan with a tripple of that tile for example we play 4 hands per round it always starts in the east -3 oclock then south 12 oclock west then south so they are directly across from one another. Each time a KAN is called that is not open you would show the 3 tiles close them on each end to show they are closed. However if you call it from a discard from the the person lets say you where east and south threw your Kong You would call Kong and it would be open Consieled hands are worth more then open hands in Mahjong That player would have to pay the fan for the other 2 players to the winner of the hand if it is a Mahjong If you are the dealer in the east seat and the east player wins this is worth 2 bounus fan otherwise it is worth 1 fan for any other player out of that seat but collected and played that wind round so if we are in South round and you are in East you can gain 1 fan for it if it is in your hand 3 tiles of south. but if the south seat collects it and wins the hand with it its worth +2 fan bonus if you call Mahjong and don't have it you lose -3 fan or have less then 3 fan you will lose 6 fan 16 hands per round then the dealer or Round Wind will go to south and repeat until there back to east they can continue or call the game the one with the most fan collated is the winner but beware losing a round will cost you 3 fan each unless it called from a discard then it is 1 fan each. If you have the Dora it is worth +1 if you have more then one it is worth however min you have of that Dora there can only be 4 dora example lets say it was 5 bambo 6 bambo is the dora and is worth +1 fan each A dora is decided when a closed kong or open kong is reached closed kongs can flip the dora while it is still there turn however if it is a open Kong they must flip it at the end of there turn. Doras have multipliers lets say you had 2 dora and you win the hand 3X 2 = 6 Fan the more dora you have the more value if you had 8 dora for example 3 X 8 = 24 FAN The only way you collect this fan is by winning the hand MAHJONG If you use the Dora 3 or more to finish your hand it is a 5X multiplier if 2 people call mahjong the last person that played would follow the wind to its winner. The hands have there own values and the same rules apply for robing ....if you where playing with cash each fan is worth 0.25 $ US I do not multiply fan into point values I leave it at fan

I heard that mahjong stimulate the memory cell and coordination. I highly recommend nursing home should have this activity and play it with chips instead of actual money. I use to play it with my mom and siblings !
@CantoneseCorner6 жыл бұрын
I so agree!! I used to volunteer at the China Coast Community home in KowloonTong and was told that mahjong wasn't allowed because they didn't want any actual money being used. I always thought that was such a shame since I've read as well that it stimulates the brain and helps maybe with dementia and other memory-loss ailments. They may have changed their rules now, and I hope they have since it is such a great social and mental game.

Given a counter-clockwise rotation: A Western map is viewed from above, looking down at the Earth; hence: East, North, West, South. In China, the view is from below, gazing up at the heavens; thus: East, South, West, North.

Hi there! Thanks for commenting and watching the mahjong videos! I have a video about my different sets, and their sizes, and where to buy a good set if you are in the USA. Here's the link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqGzfINth9uEipI I have three sets, and the size is pretty much around 1.4 x 1.1 x 0.8 inches I think. I hope that helps and happy playing! :)
