The literacy problem is not because of the complicated characters. Its the lack of access. Acorrding to to my grandmother.

Your pronunciation is amazingly good! Even better than many local HKers. Just a minor reminder. You said 焗花茶 in stead of 菊花茶.

I was wondering if you could help me with a dilemma I am facing. I love to learn languages and it's something I'm good at. Currently learning Turkish and finishing up B2 French. I would love to learn Cantonese. It seems like one of the funnest languages ever (Turkish is guilty of that as well!), but I am very intimidated because of how limited it can be for me as a European without the money to travel even once to Hong Kong or Guangdong. Of course all languages are of value and worth the effort, however practically speaking for a lower middle class person, will I be able to apply it anywhere? Sometimes I wish I was born 30 years earlier (born in '99) so I could plunge into it without a second thought in regards to its importance in the work field.

At the end of 70’s, I left Hong Kong since then . Fortunately, I visit Hong Kong every year almost except during the pandemic. I am so upset about the riots one after another. I could understand why China push the security laws. I really don’t want to say that the laws meant to protect us but they do . I don’t like being intimidated by those rioters when I express a different opinion. I don’t think everybody would think the same. What’s right or wrong to do. The bottom line is I have the right to speak my mind out. It seems that I was deprived my right by those rioters. I have the same kind of rights as they have, nothing less. Anyway, you are welcome to come back to Hong Kong. I consider Hong Kong is my home no matter where I am or will be. I have lived in Canada and US. I grew up in Hong Kong until my 20’s.

The wonderful thing about the world is that we can see the same things with different perspectives. Some may see the political alignment to China as a good thing and some may view it as less desirable. Just like what you said, we make our decision that works best for us.

You know how Hong Kong came into existence right? It was occupied by the Brit decades ago after the Qing dynasty lost in a war. It’s a tragic event in Chinese history book. Since China is different now. Isn’t it high time to reclaim the land to make the country whole again. China has her own form of government which is very different than the capitalistic governance. The HK people are accustomed to the latter. Of course it will take time to educate them to assimilate. Hopefully they will eventually find the form of government in China is as good if not better than so called democracy of the western world. China is so prosperous, now the second largest economy of the world and is still expanding! What’s wrong with that?

Hong Kong was a shithole during 40s and 50s. How do I know? My grandparents moved to HK after the Chinese civil war from shanghai. It was such a shithole my grandparents immediately started to arrange our family moving to the US. But it took a long while, by the 1960s, things were really bad including bombing (year really). Things turned decidedly better in the 70s and 80s when China opened up and HK was acting as a proxy to the entire Chinese export industry. So the raise of HK was linked to China. My family moved to LA at the end of 1960s, and my grandparents to this day still regarded missing out on the Chinese boom. However, as Chinese cities like Shanghai becoming major ports, it is inevitable Hong Kong will see a decline

The history of Hong Kong is so interesting .... and I know a little about what you say your grandparents experienced from working at the HKJC and doing a lot with archives and how the Club contributed to making HK more livable and enjoyable for the people starting really in the 50s and 60s because with all the refugees conditions really did seem awful. So the Club started working with the government to build medical centres, Victoria Park, Ocean Park, swimming pools, etc. My father-in-law was among those who came down from Guangzhou in I think the early 60s and his journey here was incredible as a refugee -- walk, train, boat, swim .... something that now takes mere minutes to accomplish on the bullet train. I am sad that HK wasn't/isn't allowed to continue to be the insanely vibrant place it once was, but as you say, it is inevitable given the history of the handover. Thanks for sharing your story .... if I could spend all day just learning about what people went through to get here and get paid for it, I would do just that!

Just come across your video from KZbin, you really know Hong Kong very well. I was born and grew up there and come to the USA in 70s and had my family back to Hong Kong in 1989 , primarily we would like our children whom were born in LA, to learn Chinese and Cantonese. We moved back to Los Angeles 2002 for the children got ready for the college here. You really loved Hong Kong from what talked about Hong Kong. In 80s and 90s, you are right that it was the best time for everyone to live and to do business in Hong Kong. All the best to you and wish you may visit Asia very soon. Thank you.
