It is a high potency, long-range lighter. What more could you want? Shoot it down a dark corridor to spot whatever lies ahead; safely set off any traps, that use fire in some part of their mechanism; ignite explosive barrels; don't care about any locked wooden object, regardless of chest or door. I like such versatility.

It's a very solid choice!

I always forget how long the range is on this spell! That's super handy for squishy casters 🙌

Haha it's a super strong choice at those earlier levels!

The wizard in my game hurled one at a bunch of orcs in room littered with broken wood furniture, fabrics etc and set the whole manse on fire. Then cast fog cloud to cover their escape.

Once i used it on a Banshee at melee range. The damage was a Lot AND my DM said: you used your magic and create a shotgun explosión from your hand

*Screams in Flame Hyenard* But yeah, lighting things on fire has a ton of utility, from disposing/getting rid of things to campfires.

You could also use it as makeshift fireworks for your sick party haha!

the standard damaging cantrip with a bit of utility for just lighting up stuff at a distance mainly stuff u dont care if it's damaged haha I think all mainly damaging cantrips should have this as their basis (and all mainly utility ones have prestidigitasion and light haha)
@ChancesSpellbook5 жыл бұрын
I really do find it's a staple in almost every casters bag of tricks! Personally I like Create Bonfire a little more, but the range on fire bolt is hard to argue with haha!

@@ChancesSpellbook ye, whenever I go sorcerer or wizard there's a 90% chance I'll take firebolt haha unless I want to go for a specific kind of playstyle that'd have better use of other stuff I'll pick it

You could use this to destroy weapons and shields that have less the 10 hp. Say blasting the head of a Speer or destroy a target's crossbow. You would roll at disadvantage i think and the weapon would damage not the person using it. Perfect for blowing up gun and bomb users as up can target the explosive pounder weapons.

In a recent campaign I DM'd, a shop owner was illegally smuggling dangerous magical creatures into the city for sale to the rich nobles. They escaped and a cocatrice was running amok,hiding in shelves and popping out to peck at anything nearby and hiding again. The wizard panicked and his fire bolt missed hitting the shelves instead and nearly burning down the store in the process.

Can you cast it as reaction?
@yesmansam66867 ай бұрын
I think that depends on the dm. I ruled in my game that it can be readied. My players set up a few powder kegs by a door and had the wizard cast fireball as a reaction to the bandits breaking through. It blew them to smithereens.
