I love that this story is both about South Asian hockey players breaking into the NHL as well as about a local BC kid who grew up dreaming of playing for the Canucks and has excelled in his journey towards that point. Wasn't Robin Bawa East Indian?
@joelface9 ай бұрын
Yes. Actually Jujhar Khaira was the third NHL player of Indian or Punjabi descent, following Robin Bawa (starting in 1989) and Manny Malhotra (starting in 1998). That said, the term "East Indian" is extremely outdated. Robin Bawa was not from "the eastern part of India" and was actually born on Vancouver Island.

@joelface9 ай бұрын
I don't know if Arshdeep Bains or his family identify as Punjabi, but either way, the term "South Asian" includes those from the Punjab region as well. So South Asian would not be incorrect, but it would be a little less specific. Still, since the story is an exciting development for all South Asian families looking for representation in the NHL, it makes sense to keep the more general title, I think! Either way, it's a very exciting moment.

@@kevinpatriquin822 I mean the kid was the All Star MVP a month ago in the league just below the NHL.. I don't know if you know anything about hockey but the Canucks haven't called any prospects or young guys up to their team this season because of how well they have been playing and want the young guys to develop. He is the first young guy they have called up. The reason they bring up race is because hockey is considered a white sport and thus isn't growing like the NBA or NFL cause of that tag.
