Canyon Of The Ancients is a National Monument run by the BLM. This National Monument is incredible and might be better than Mesa Verde National Park, luckily RV living takes us to all of these fantastic locations.
Our day starts of as we leave our RV boondocking spot near Mancos Colorado. Then we head over to the Canyon Of The Ancients visitor center for some information before we head out and explore. We are advised by the BLM to go to Sand Canyon trailhead for a short but great hike. Then we drive on to Hovenweep National Monument and end the day at Lowery Pueblo. I have lived in the Cortez area my whole life and have yet to visit this site! Mesa verde is cool but this place.... magical this whole area is amazing. Lots lots more than just those, just gotta know the secret spots! Awesome video man!

About a year ago we spent a day exploring that area, including Hovenweep National Monument. It is very cool, but also (as you said) very remote and spread out! There are some cool remote camping spots...although some of the best ones are tricky to get to. We were there in Dec/Jan and there weren't a lot of people around, but I don't think it gets very heavy usage even in the Summer. Fun Fact: Osprey Packs are headquartered right there in Cortez, Colorado.

We visited Aztec Ruins National Monument in NM and Moon House Ruins in Utah. Both were awesome however fair warning, the drive to Moon House requires high clearance vehicle and is a rough drive. Definitely worth it though!
