I am an original disciple of The Purple Line. His infinite understanding and flexibility has brought so much joy into my life. Without him, i'd probably still be stuck on 1 way streets in San Francisco. He knows all routes but in his grace we may choose the path that suits us best in this moment. Though he once recommended the Comox Ferry i know it was only so that i may find true enlightenment in Earl's Cove.

I started touring in 1972 on a 650 Bonneville. So I have quite a bit of experience when I say, “Take half the stuff and twice the amount of money.” Do that and you will have a great tour no matter the weather. All good tips. Thanks.

My 1972 trip was up and down the west coast on my CL 350. Just a sleeping bag, a sack full of other stuff and my dad’s Texaco gas card. My riding gear was a 3/4 helmet, ski parka, jeans and tennies. That was the way to do it!

You know the way. :) Solo touring is easier without reservations. And when you pack a tent. Last summer (first summer of my riding) I got tired of riding at 2/3rd of the distance to my original destination for the week. At that city I ended up participating for a two day rock festival without planning it. Went back home from there due to time restrictions. Amazing trip without even reaching the original destination!

Before I attempted my first cross country trip, a KZbinr made the same comment about not making reservations. Best advice ever. With weather, traffic unpredictably, and your own body can mean after a couple hundred kilometres, you can just start looking for a place rather than push on

Excellent advice about a shakedown ride around the neighborhood or town for packing systems. My first overnighter was a quick camping trip on my Ninja 300 (read: tiny pillion for gear). The ride out took 5 hours. The ride back was 2 hours. The difference was all because I didn't know how to strap down my gear on the first try and it kept coming loose or I simply didn't trust it and kept stopping to check it every 20 minutes.

Great video! I now practice the "No Reservations" method of traveling. Just completed a 2K+ mile trip from eastern Iowa to north west NV although in a Corvette, not a bike but I made no reservations, no agenda, all two lanes, and stopped at every sight that looked interesting. It was such a great stress free trip and enjoyable way to travel. I was also solo so I had no one else to appease or worry about.

Could not agree with you more on riding early in the morning. It’s magical. Soft light, quiet, nobody up and on the road yet. The sky has a certain haze and glow that just feel soft. When I start a trip, I get so excited for that moment to leave early. Hard to put into words just how great that is. Sets the tone for the day. Thanks for a great video.

Lovely thoughts and I agree with everything you've said. My longest tour was 6,000 miles SF to NOLA. Early May a friend and I leave for Portugal. Three weeks on motorcycles touring the whole country. We could have done a guided tour for $9,000 plus dollars for two weeks totally safe and regimented. Instead we are doing it your way. Taking it a day at a time and seeing what surprises are in store. Life only comes around once.

I'm 74 and put 4,000 or more miles on a bike every year (now on a Multistrada "S" Touring and a XR650L ). Started riding "cross country" (60's terminology for adventure riding) in 1966 on an old BSA 650 Thunderbolt and a BSA 441 Victor - my dual sport at the time! I, like you, can't imagine life without touring (asphalt or dirt). Ride safe all!

I have been enjoying your vlogs for some time and I think this one might be your best (not counting the driveway race track video which is epic). You often discuss technical 'how to' ride topics but here you discuss the 'why you' ride topic. I saw my first motorcycle at age 4 and it is burned into memory. I got my M/C license ten years later at 14 and now at 66 there are 3 bikes in the garage including my touring rig, an 83 BMW R100RT; a bike designed to carry 15# of tools under the seat if you so choose and to be completely disassembled with those tools if you so choose. The perfect touring machine IMO. This vlog greatly reminded me of a 1974 book by Roger Lovin called "The Complete Motorcycle Nomad" that greatly influenced me. Although very dated its advice on touring mirrors yours. Lovin pointed out many have toured the world on 50cc Honda cubs. As a Canadian I have often toured across the USA and have tried to be spontaneous in my daily destinations. When crossing over the border US customs/immigration always asks for destination. I invariably point down the road and reply "That way." Every so often I get an officer who then sticks their head out the window of their booth, takes a long hard look at the loaded bike and full leathered up rider and makes strong eye contact, slightly nods their head, and states "Carry on". They understand. Thanks for your vlogs and the opportunity to comment. Kind regards. 🇨🇦

Regarding packing & planning, coudn't agree more. A few years ago we flew into Santiago Chile with our bicycles. The only plan we had at the start, was to head South. What followed was 9 months of the best time of our lives. We dumped lots of gear & when we could, sent other stuff home. We listened to the locals & travelled over 8000km through incredible country not shown in tourist itineraries. We 'cycles for 4 months at above 3000M & came back worn out but buzzing for life.

An update for my last comment on this, I did take that five-week trip I rode 17,000 km in that time. I was planning to do some camping but I ended up doing more airbnb and some hotels. The reservations were also my motivation if I had a long day of riding sometimes 9 hours because of the weather. Knowing that I have to get up the next day and travel to my next destination to make my reservation. Helps a lot I could have just stayed where I was for another day or sleep in because I was tired or whatever from the previous. I also planned in my trip to stay at certain places for 6 days. To have them as a base. Another good thing with reservations was I knew where I was leaving my bike and it wasn't open on the middle of a street somewhere where it could be damaged or stolen. Sidenote the bike I was using was a BMW f800gt.

Another wonder way is having a "home base". Did my first touring trip with my uncle. We stayed at our "home base" and adventured out from that for a few days in a different ways. I watched your video having traveled tens of thousands of kilometers and can agree on almost all. Go out there, be prepared, don't take to much, plan a little, but improvise as well. I however happily leave having to change out the tires on the road. Yes you wont get the best deal, but not using the last 4000 km on your tires is losing a lot as well. Just start to look for new tires before the canvas is coming out, here in Europe you can just call any nearby shop ask for their available tires prices and time.

I really enjoyed this video. Informative, eloquent, heartfelt and perfectly delivered. As a new rider (age 49!) waiting to do his full licence, I took my first road trip a month ago on my 2021 Honda CB125R. Friends thought I was crazy but I rode 350km to visit a friend and did the same trip home 2 days later. Avoided motorways which meant the journey took 7+hours each way. A challenge but the bike is a gem and served me well. I totally felt the freedom you spoke of (despite having a destination and deadline) and rode with a big stupid grin on my face for most of the journey. Can't wait to do many more such trips and on a bigger bike when I get my full licence this summer. Thanks for the effort and heart you put into this. Best wishes and stay safe.👍😊

For my experience, the long distance motorcycle has some specifics key factors : - weight from 150kg-220kg (stable enough to withstand wind blast on highway speeds, and heavy enough to ride on the tough terrain) - panniers mounting comfy - engine power from 500cc+ - higher handlebar with comfortable sitting position - fuel efficiency - reliability of the motorcycle itself

Might want to do a video on proper packing of a motorcycle. A gentleman recently had his sleeping bag come off and get caught the rear wheel and locked it up. He lost a leg at the knee and a toe on the other foot, broken ribs and lacerations. He had full touring luggage, but it wasn't enough room... He'd been on tons of outing before the accident. Please pray for him he's here on youtube as well going through his physical therapy.

@@CanyonChasers Hey man, if you're going for the 'Austin Powers Shagadelic Toolshed' look, it rocks! I'm kidding, of course; It doesn't detract from the great content you're putting out. PS: Can you make the colour change and flicker at 1k RPM? Now that'd rock...

Cool vid. I don't know if the planner in me can handle no reservations haha. It's an interesting thing to consider and definitely opens up flexibility for the ride. I know you kind of went over what to bring on a trip and what not do but a really cool vid I think wouod be specifically going over exactly what and how you pack for a trip. Seeing how everything fits in bags and what exactly you'd bring for a long ride is informative.

This says it all. Period. Full stop. Thank you for articulating what is the essence of the riding experience. 2022 was my first full year of riding and clocked up >10k on a 500cc little beast. In my two big trips through New England in Spring and the Blue Ridge in fall, they accounted for 5400 miles and 375,000 vertical feet. Not a bad year. You advice is completely spot on from tire inflators to luggage to housing and the rest of it. A suggestion (if you haven't already read it) to get the book "FLOW" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It describes the concept of being in-the-moment perfectly. The other must-read is "Blue Highways" by William Least Heat-Moon. I'm less than 24hrs home from a trip and already planning the next. Hope to live the rest of my life in the same pattern! As always, thanks for the great video, advice and inspiration.

One of my favorite things to do is to have general destination and then simply use a compass and backcountry roads to get there. I've discovered the most interesting roads and places with that system. Of course I have a gps or google maps as a back up in case I mess it up too badly. :)

I keep a rear rim and tire around as a spare. If I head off on a trip, put on the spare, and when I get home I have a rim and half used tire for when I need it.

That picture of Warren is still one of my all time favorites! I have toured on several bikes, from a 2006 Ninja 250 to a 2019 KTM 1290 super adventure R, that was a technical marvel, and both trips were equally amazing. You dont need to break the budget and get a $20k adventure bike. Use what you have or get a good used bike for $5000 and go make memories. I have taken sport bikes off road more times than alot of people have who own 'adventure' bikes. Smart? Perhaps not. Memories that I'll have forever of getting chased by cows in Wyoming, or going over a mountain range on a goat trail during a surprise thunder storm in Montana ? Priceless. Living in the moment is such an integral part of touring. my biggest failing is I always push too hard and I believe that is my profession pushing me that if I don't do 700 miles in a day then I have failed. on my last multiday tour, I took it slow and I took my time and it was the most relaxed tour that I ever had. Suddenly I had all this time to talk with people who were interested in where I was going or wanted to talk about my bike. I had a farmer in somewhere, Idaho tell me a joke that I remember to this day, "Why does Triumph make televisions?" I dont know, Sir...,"Because they couldn't find a way to make them leak oil" He then chuckled, tipped his hat to me, and went into the store, not even realizing that he had just changed my life and how I would look at things from then on. I haven't done a multiday tour since I hit that deer on the gixxus when I broke my own rule about riding at night and it was the exact scenario about the reservations. I rode through Parowan, past multiple motels that would have loved for me to stay there and enjoy the town even though it was getting dark, but I had to get to the Motel 6 in Huntsville, dammit! I had a reservation! Fast forward one 65+ mph deer strike later and I really didn't give a crap about that reservation. Fantastic vid, Dave! Sorry, didnt mean to get into story mode, but this vid brought up alot of great memories including the 2010(I think?) canyonchaser memorial ride that was my first(and only) group tour and it is still my favorite one.

Get-there-itis can be dangerous on a motorcycle if you're pushed into situations you're uncomfortable with. I usually leave plenty of extra time for the next leg of the trip or, as you said, just cancel the reservation and find another spot. Having a full toolkit also helps.

Wow, I'm just inspired by your video man! I've often dreamt of touring myself and though I've done some long rides in CA and here in VA, it's not a very long ride compared to yours. I love riding my VFR now and I plan to do more of it, hopefully my body can take it. But this is definitely in my retired bucket list for sure!

I wouldn't argue that your advice is bad. But I go the opposite route. I usually maximise the potential for failure. I bring minimum amounts clothing, ride the bike as it is and bring no tools. No reservations ever, i sleep in a tent unless I need to dry my riding gear. I charge a powerbank on the bike while riding and charge intercoms during the night. I've gone touring for many years and still haven't had any issues that wasn't manageable by small purchases at the first available stop. But I understand that I am in the minority. I understand that people aim to ride with some amount of orderliness and security. I however love the no strings attached touring, cowboy on a Vstrom adventures....

Adventure riding is almost as fun as mountain biking, with less sweat and more ground covered. My original dirtbike for the CO alpine pass loop was a Sportster, now it’s a KLR. More performance ADV riding videos, please.
