I read that Cao Shuang also took Sima Zhao, as some sort of hostage for his campaign and after the return, Zhao took the blame for the failure as his marquis was severely reduced. I may have misread it, but there is a this weird anecdote, where the Wei forces are under attack during the night and Sima Zhao stayed hidden in his tent. It's from the Jinshu.

I think the proper way to translate that is that he didn't panic and remained in his tent as his unit fought off the night raid. But yes Sima Zhao was on this campaign as a hostage of sorts.

Sima Shi was married to Xiahou Xuan's sister, Xiahou Hui. So the Xiahou family and by extension the Cao family are in-laws with the Sima family.

Cao Shuang's exchange of concessions with Sima Yi is quite ridiculous. The capital city is the seat of power and should not be used as a bargaining chip lol. In addition, General of the central guards seems like it is more important than the one in charge of the palace guards and more so the commander of the western forces. Cao Shuang initially did well by consolidating his power in the capital city, controlling all the key military posts within the capital city. He should have just sit back and wait for Sima Yi to grow super old and die of old age instead. Patience is virtue.

cao shuang rule the court but somehow only dumb and dumber stick to him and he believe their strategy by using a river less route to march if i want to choose that route i will make preparation of building some post secretly to maybe dig a well or march slowly and build a supply post along the way but no let just set it in one go and being arrived exhausted and deflected by less amount of enemy

Question? Did Sima Yi never try to invade shu during his time out west? Was it due to age? Cao Rui not wanting him to improve his own standing? I think you recently answered this but I can't remember.

1. Not during the time Zhuge Liang was alive as Wei was very much on the defense and could not afford another offense after Cao Zhen’s failed attack which is when Sima Yi took over. Also Zhuge Liang whooped him badly during the fourth northern expeditions so Sima Yi wasn’t looking for a fight. 2. After Zhuge Liang’s death Sima Yi did request for an attack but Cao Rui denied it probably due to worries that Sima Yi would gain too much prestige from it.

Can Cao Shuang borrow more troops from the Western Army for this campaign? If he success, then great; but if he lose, then the Western Army will take the brunt of casualty, and thus weaken Sima Yi power base. Similarly, Cao Shuang could use more veteran generals of the Western Army for this campaign. Having someone who actually knows how to fight won't hurt, and if thing go wrong, you can always scapegoat them and replace those loyal to Sima Yi with his own
