I am currently enrolled in Hadar's online" Accent Makeover" class. She is THE BEST TEACHER! I have purchased many of the best accent reduction courses, and they all explain how the sounds should be made, but what Hadar teaches is how to make it a habit to pronounce it correctly. It is even better than the private lessons that I took with different gurus in this field. Check out her facebook group "Fluency Challenge", and if you are serious in your quest to reduce your accent go to her website, check when is the next class. I am so happy I found her!

@@hadar.shemesh Hi, Hadar. I think you are wonderful. You are a lovely, gentle, sensitive person and I feel you are brilliant at adding value to the people who learn from you. I have my own English school in Taiwan and understand many if the challenges you face, especially when people post negative comments about you. There are millions of people judging every word that you say. I've found comments about this video by Americans who disagree with each other about how you should pronounce words... I'm South African, and we have a sort of British accent. It's challenging to guide students to speak with the ”correct accent”. There are countless ways in which I'm imperfect in my ability to pronounce words perfectly so as to satisfy every listener. However, that should not stop me from helping people with whatever ability I have. Of course, I should strive to constantly refine my ability, but it's unwise to wait to be perfect before you help others improve. It takes courage and love to step forward and help regardless of how you are judged. It's not about us, it's about helping others to the best of our ability. You are an inspiring example.

First of all, thank you, Hadar. You're the very best teacher! So... I always thought that the letter *u* in words like "dust" and "lust", e.g., sound it as a schwa. I mean, this /ʌ/ vowel is difficult and soft at the same time. I think I'm gonna use the schwa or the open front unrounded vowel /a/ that American English doesn't have, haha. It's the only way I found to distinguish cap and cop from cup. One day I'll master that sound!

Not to quibble, but as a native MidAtlantic speaker, I haven't ever heard anyone pronounce "lost" to rhyme with "roster". Normally would rhyme it with cost and foster though. I've heard 'flog' pronounced to rhyme with either frog or dog but the back 'ah' sound for lost sounds strange to my ear FWiW.

Jeremy Johnson I live in Texas, and all those O's sound exactly the same to me (also in Johnson.) Remember, this is series is for students learning English, and Hadar cannot possible account for regional differences in dialect. There are words which she teaches that sound different from the way I say them, but in the big scheme of things, I would have no problem understanding them in a conversation. They aren't wrong, just not the same.

No, you shouldn't memorize a list. a as in cat is usually spelled with 'a', cup is usually spelled with 'o' 'ou' 'u' 'oo' and ah as in father is spelled with 'o' and sometimes 'aw' 'au' 'ou'.. But I mostly recommend to open your ears and first try to hear the difference ..
