Space is limited in circuits today. Best to use one cap. If the caps are in series the capacitance is reduced. This is DC electric 101.

OK, that's fine for total capacitance but it creates a false impression that total capacitance is the important issue. If you are using capacitors in parallel as a filter network such as an old school audio amplifier, you will have a number of different value caps, each dealing with different frequency ranges of power rail noise. Even the term frequency is misleading because it's more about the noise spike slope than the period between spikes. For example, a full wave diode bridge rectifier will typically have 2 switching spikes per AC cycle, say 100 HZ. However if the cap is sized to effectively smooth 100 Hz, it will not smooth these spikes, You need orders of magnitude smaller value cap to pass these spikes to ground because a large smoothing cap will not pass such a fast rising spike to ground. So, the old school solution for power amps was a parallel bank of capacitors, dealing complex power & rectification anomalies.

Most circuits today are black boxed. When something goes wrong they change the black box. New televisions are made like that today. Televisions don't use transformers now for the last 10 or more years. That's the biggest power hog. A device is made so when the device is in the sleep mode it will use way down in the micro to Pico amps. The new TVs LED will be cool to the touch. Some government engineers in Minnesota a number of years ago had all the stop/go lights use LEDs Well when it snowed the LEDs would not melt the snow. Cars were running red lights due to stupid government. They had to put heaters on the lights. Would have been cheaper to leave the lights as they were.

Isn’t there a concern regarding the voltage rating of the capacitors in electronics? In larger capacitors such as used in motor starting in refrigeration we were taught that the max voltage was only as good as the lowest rated capacitor in that parallel circuit. Capacitance is added as in your examples.
@dansmith2863

Yes that's true, the lowest voltage capacitor is the new max voltage for the whole parallel system. As that is the one which will pop first if the voltage gets to high.

Can a capacitor be set up in series or only in parallel?
@martinkuliza

Of course thy can There is a formula for capacitors , both in series and in parallel in Parallel - C Total = C1 + C2+ C3+C4 In Series - C Total = 1 ----------------------------------------- C1 + C2+ C3+C4 now. the fact that the 2 formulae exist proves you can do it if you want examples In a SMPS it's common to find a cap in parallel on the INPUT FILTER Section before the rectifier.... this would be your X CAPACITOR in a SMPS it's common to find a cap in-series to ground just after the filter section. this would be your Y CAPACITOR Any other questions ?

If you add a large capacitor to a Car battery. Does it create issues? I have done this with an older car with hopes to always give a more reliable spark or more ampacity. Older cars with old electric fans are more hungery for the juels :-) I don't know who to ask these questions. But I've read that when you place 2 car batteries in series. one battery may get hotter than the other. This would maybe be identicle to adding a cap Can you provide some insight?

What I have done to a 1986 celica. I added a capacitor with voltage display, (pcbLk2.0) Inside the cab Of the car I wired this capacitor and voltage Display in parallel with the car battery. I used 12 gage stranded. To hopefully increase the ampacity. I did not use the resistor supplied. Except for the initial charge of the capacitor. This car has old fans and electrical components that consume a lot of amps. If you run All the cabin components it may hog the amps i prefer the engine to have. I have run the car like this for 6 months. At this point it's just theory.

Its not like i can program the car to increase a little more fuel when The voltage regulator kicks on. @martinkuliza 2 жыл бұрын
@@octavioganoy6360 ok, thanks for clarification, that's much better. well, Your battery is 12V and the capacitor can take 25V Max, so your'e fine on that point as for the purpose being TO BOOST the battery . Mate, a battery is A POWER SOURCE a Capacitor is not I'TS NOT GOING TO BOOST ANYTHING it's not as if you're going to get 12V from the battery + 25V from the capacitor What will happen is the battery will fill the capacitor to 12V (since the max Voltage of the battery is 12V) or to put it another way VOLTAGE IS PRESSURE now, if battery is supplying 12V of pressure (let's call it) and the capacitor can take 25V of pressure max then 1. The battery cannot supply more than 12V of pressure 2. therefore the capacitor can only be filled to 12V of pressure so effectively you will still have only 12V DC on the output now, as a side note if you put 2 x 12V Batteries IN-SERIES you would then have 12V of pressure adding to 12V pressure , giving 24V and your capacitor would then fill to 24V and still be ok since it's rated to 25V HOWEVER... i dare say the manufacturer (just like in cars) has rated that particular battery for that particular bike so i wouldn't go putting 2 batteries in-series so win 1 x 12V battery and a 25V Capacitor 1. I HIGHLY DOUBT YOU'LL DAMAGE ANYTHING 2. YOU WON'T BE BOOSTING ANYTHING 3. WHAT WILL LIKELY HAPPEN IS if there is any ripple on the Voltage IT WILL GET SMOOTHED OUT, but your Load devices will still receive what they receive because the rest of the circuit stays the same all you have done is added a capacitor (i assume) In-Parallel to the battery. TRY IT IF YOU WANT, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO HURT ANYTHING DOING THAT as for the other accessories what are they ? My thoughts are... 1. Since your intention is to boost (so to speak) the circuit, WHICH YOU CAN'T DO 2. and i assume it's just about powering these extra accessories 3. ARE WE ABLE TO CREATE A SEPARATE CIRCUIT FOR THEM ? How big are they some ideas... - Maybe create a separate circuit if they work independant of the bike and have them have their own battery - if they need the power from the bike battery then a separate circuit is still possible with perhaps a cap or a relay in place (Again depending on power requirements and how these accessories are supposed to work with the bike) Give me your thoughts

@@kennmossman8701 Exactly but from what he's describing it sounds like it's just going to serve to smooth. i think he's trying to get an added 25V (on the grounds that the cap is rated 25V) but doesn't realize the source is only 12V i think he thinks that the supposed 25V can power his additional devices without draining the battery but like you said, PRACTICALLY... it's a NO

@@martinkuliza many motorcycle owners are done connecting 10k uf capacitor on there motorcycle battery to prevent voltage drop and that is already proven and tested affective even mine. My question is how about if I used a higher capacitance like 100k uf because I have this one. Is that capacitance still ok for the electrical parts of motorcycle..?

@martinkuliza
@martinkuliza 2 жыл бұрын
LOL.... Hi mate, Let me guess.... You saw the video and heard the word "coulomb" then thought WTF ??? then Larry answered by saying "Measure of charge" and you are still thinking ... WTF ???? but your'e also thinking... "umm, ok,... umm i won't bother larry again because i either don't want to be a dick or appear stupid" LOL Mate, i fucking understand you , ok I'm an engineer, and when i started Uni and they mentioned it i was scratching my head for a week LET ME SIMPLIFY IT FOR YOU OK 1. There is nothing to be embarrassed about, it's not like you asked "what's 5+5" LOL, You're asking about a COULOMB OK... let me first paint a picture in your head, ok . - Imagine me and you are bouncers in a nightclub - You are standing on the outside of the door and i'm on the inside - Between me and you is only enough space for 1 person to fit and walks past at any time - ok so now me and you talk and a person walks through the door WE CALL THIS "1 PERSON" (as a definition) - Now... let's say 20 people walk in, 1 at a time , 1 after the other, but instead of calling it "20 People" me and you decide we will define it as "1 GROUP OF PEOPLE" so.. 1 Group = 20 people, 40 people = 2 groups, regardless of whether they are together or not.... YOU STILL WITH ME LOL... Cool so now let's get back to engineering (Relax your brain for a second ) so consider .... This is one of those things which is like a russian doll, in the sense we have this, but then there is this and this is defined by that but it also has this. so.. we have electricity, within it we have Voltage, Current, Resistance and if that wasn't enough we went a step further , we couldn't just say here is current and it's measured in Amperes, we had to define even further NOW SWITCH YOUR BRAIN ON AGAIN :P Remember the bouncer analogy... ok here we go Electricity is literally ELECTRONS MOVING Now let's say that the actual size of an electron is .. this wide | | , that wide Now HERE IS WHAT A COLOUMB IS If you were able to , and you wanted to watch electrons racing by as you would cars on a freeway or people walking into a nightclub Imagine you watched ONLY the space between the lines and imagine that that space was a point on a cable/wire Now in reality in order to watch 1 electron go by the space can ONLY BE WIDE ENOUGH FOR THE SIZE AND WIDTH OF 1 ELECTRON GOT THAT ? so now you're watching 1 electron go by ( you call it an electron) you watch another go by, it's also 1 electron ELECTRONS HAVE CHARGE (Negative Charge) NOW.... (listen carefully) When a certain amount (GROUP) of electrons go by , WE CALL IT A COLOUMB (because it has a certain amount of charge) BUT THERE ARE CATCHES AS FOLLOWS TO BE A COLOUMB 1. THIS MANY electrons have to pass by that point 6,241,509,074,460,762,607 2. that number of electrons MUST pass by the point IN A TIME SPACE OF EXACTLY 1 SECOND When that is achieved - A Certain amount of charge is achieved in a circuit IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING WE CALL THE COLLECTIVE CHARGE OF THAT MANY ELECTRONS PER SECOND........1 Coloumb NOW... AREN'T YOU GLAD YOU ASKED THE QUESTION LMFAO Now... you don't need to say WTF anymore but you are free to say HOLY SHIT Any other questions mate ? FYI, this is how i came to understand what a coloumb is when i first learned it it's basically a certain amount of electrons that pass a point, Per second. and in extension to that, this charge is Equal to 1 Ampere so the obvious question is why don't they just call it 1 Amp ?? well.... it's because science feels better if we can actually count the amount of fucking electrons LOL we need to know LITERALLY how many electrons are there why....??? BECAUSE WE NEED TO KNOW LOL does that help also.... SO LARRY WAS CORRECT it's a measure of charge LOL
