The 2D fighters of the 32 bit era are still so amazing today. Back in the 32 bit era, I would play my Saturn and Playstation almost equally for fighting games. Tekken, Soul Blade, Rival Schools, and Star Gladiator of PSX and The Capcom, SNK, and Sega fighters on my Saturn. No surprise that 25 years later and I can still pick up my old Saturn 2D games and play them for hours. But, I put in one of my old PS1 3D games and they just look so terrible now. 2D = timeless!
@recoildisruptor32175 жыл бұрын
So true. The 2D Sprite-based games have aged like fine wine. Gameplay and "character" is still robust within them. But man... the polygonal games on ps1 are really rough to play. Sony really did dupe the masses back then into thinking that "something was wrong" if a game was 2D and polygon-free. I'm so glad I wasn't one of those people who fell for their marketing propaganda.
@recoildisruptor32175 жыл бұрын
^We will agree to disagree, and for several reasons. 1. The precedent was set by Sony when it came to the "rush to adopt polygons" while 2D was arguably still in its prime at the time. As usual, Sony paid for lots of marketing propaganda when they entered the console market. They even had a staunch "no 2D" policy implemented for several years -- it's quite likely that this happened because sony was fully aware of how much better the Sega Saturn was at handling sprite-based games. 2. The n64 was released (at least) one year after sony's ps1. Nintendo had trouble even securing third parties back then, despite the n64 still being a success. They didn't have a "no 2D" policy; they just had difficulty securing third parties due to their insistence on remaining cartridge based. The only platform holder to have a "no 2D" policy at any time was Sony. I was fortunate enough to see it all unfold throughout that generation as a multi-console owner, so I had an unbiased set of eyes on things. Summer jobs sure did come in handy back then 🙏

Yup, most of my PS1 collection consists of Japan-only 2D games. Sony Japan did not have that anti-2D bias like Sony in North America. Most 2D games still look amazing today whereas a lot of 3D PS one games have not aged well at all. I would take a 2D game with fluid animation over one with 3D graphics any day.

The Reason Capcom never developed anything for SEGA back in the Master System and Mega Drive days was because of Nintendo super restrictive policies, they were forced to develope games only for Nintendo and every single 3rd party developer could publish only a couple of games per year, their work around was to give the license to SEGA or other companies who would reprogram the games themselves
@darklordchris5 жыл бұрын
Someone else that remembers how dictator-like Nintendo was, which hurt other systems. Sadly Sony learned from both Sega & Nintendo and let everyone develop for them like Sega did, but restricted them to making only games for the PS(Like Nintendo) or have a 6 month exclusive over everyone else.

My friend picked up a Saturn just for X-Men vs. Street Fighter & after I saw that, I purchased my Saturn soon after to import titles. I played X-Men: Children of the Atom to death! My top fave characters to play with were Akuma, Psylocke, and Cyclops. I didn't think it was as hard as it was fun (especially with the combo system). But sometimes (rarely) the AI would get pretty cheap, especially the Magneto fight. Street Fighter Alpha 2. Definitely a top favorite! It even had some super easy cheat codes. Holding either of the top shoulder buttons when choosing a character would give you either rapid-fire for the attack buttons (using this with Guy meant you could do his signature combo from Final Fight!) and the other gave you unlimited custom combo time. The thing is - you couldn't have both rapid-fire and infinite custom combo time. Also! Whenever you'd win a match you could choose most of the winning poses with 1 or 2 combinations of buttons (I can't recall). Same character matches gave you ultra-sharp sound effects... Mega-Man X4... I can credit this game getting me into Anime. Those cheezy cutscenes! lol Shortly after that I watched AKIRA... But that's another story for another time and channel.

No wonder the Saturn was doing good in Japan. A bunch of the games were aimed towards to the country
@sidearmsalpha4 жыл бұрын
Japanese gamers have a different mindset. As much as there were a lot of gamers in other countries that loved 2D games at the time, the mass market was getting wowed by polygon graphics, especially with Sony promoting 3D games on the Playstation. Most gamers had moved on from SNES and Genesis and wanted more realistic graphics. It's like SEGA Lord X mentioned in his video about why the Saturn failed in the US, SEGA did not tailor it's game releases to a US audience. Sure releasing games like X-Men Vs Street Fighter and other 2D games would have helped, but the mass market wanted good 3D sports games and other 3D based games. I still have most of my import Saturn collection and they are mostly 2D games that never made it outside of Japan. Still, like you I'm sure, we only make up a small percentage of gamers that still appreciate 2D games.

Had never heard of that ghost or mahjong game before.. Interesting surprises for sure! Watching this video reaffirmed why Capcom & Sega were such a perfect combo! Save for a few stragglers, a rock-solid line of classic games and superior ports of titles far too few really got to enjoy. Have to make special note of the SF: Alpha review and say.. Thank You for putting a spotlight on that just blatant bit of bias and BS!! I actually loved Game Fan Magazine for many reasons, but that review truly tested how much. As it was such a ludicrous critique and obviously inaccurate! GFM also got rather embarrasing comeuppance about 6 months prior to that SFA review that anyone interested in fun gaming history should look into. In the September '95 issue of GFM there was a page at the front of the sports section that essentially rips the staff and what they love most a new one! It had all kinds of mistakes, swearing and nastiness written, apparently they didn't check the copy at all before sending it to the printer.. Yikes! The following issue had an editorial apology (Written in both English and Japanese, as Japan & Japanese developers were the primary targets of the garbage text in the previous issue!) explaining what happened and it's obvious that incident personally bothered them. Shame that their console bias got in the way just months later, as GFM is probably the leading supporter of the Saturn in the U.S. from that era, so it's hard to understand why the SFA review was so broken.. The 90's were a crazy time for sure and GFM was the craziest! Thanks, SLX!

There's an interesting fact about the ps1 Street Fighter Alpha. Actually, the graphics are in memory smaller and later zoomed in in-game. You can see this at the end of a fight, where there's not background and you can see clearly the artifacts generated by scaling up the graphics. The Gamefan people are really wrong if they believed that ps1 was arcade perfect conversion...

I remember that issue of Gamefan well, lol. TBH as silly as it was, I found the blue shadows episode kind of endearing, no other magazines at the time cared that much, especially about something that didn't involve polygon-related buzzwords. Despite that review they definitely remained the biggest Sega supporters in the North American press, due to their passion for 2D games. Decades later the guy who did that review, Nick Rox, eventually showed up on NeoGAF (or was it Resetera? I forget) as Aokage, which is Japanese for blue shadow. At least he kept a sense of humour about it.

Yes. It’s still Megaman X3 but if it was going to be exactly like the SNES then releasing “Saturn Megaman X Willy Wars” would have been worth the full retail price if it was the main issue.

I think one of the reasons Capcom was so great with the Saturn was at the time they lacked good 3D skills in-house. Most of their talent was in 2D graphics (anything on the CPS 1 and 2 still looks amazing today) so they could really make use of the Saturn’s uber 2D power to create arcade perfect conversions. I think if they’d had more skill with 3D graphics they’d have been chasing the PS1 crowd like all the other publishers of the time.

They released good 3D based games on the Playstation like Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3 and Dino Crisis. The port of Resident Evil for Saturn is good just not as good as the Playstation one. 3D was just harder to do on Saturn and it didn't help that SEGA did not really help 3rd party publishers with developing games for Saturn, which is pretty idiotic. Capcom was just playing it safe by releasing games that took advantage of the strengths of both systems. What is a shame is that SEGA of America did not have faith in Capcom's efforts to support Saturn with their 2D games. I'm sure Capcom would have loved to release X-Men Vs SF outside of Japan but SEGA did not want to sell the 4MB cart and Capcom wasn't going to take a chance by including it with the game and having to sell it a higher price.
