The biggest thing to me that gives perspective is how vital the PSP Monster Hunters were to keeping Capcom afloat during the dark times. PSP Monster Hunter games consistently selling around 4 million copies sounds crazy to me, but then I have to remember how much more popular the PSP was in Japan than in the rest of the world. It's hard to compare sales nowadays vs the old days when not only rentals and tradings where a thing, but also arcades. SFII was a literal worldwide phenomenon like no other fighting game ever before (or after) but all the money it made came from the arcades not the home consoles. One of the best things about Capcom as a company, is if you look at their history, they are often the company brave enough to try the risk of new things, and when they prove successful they start whole new trends in the industry. Off the top of my head the list of things Capcom is responsible for starting includes, Fighting games (Street Fighter 2), Survival Horror (Resident Evil), Character Action games (Devil May Cry), Full on remaking a classic game (Resident Evil Remake though this became more popular later on with 2's remake), the return of Fighting games (Street Fighter 4), Digital only small scale produced retro revival games (Megaman 9), Digital only (at first) small scale classic game remakes (Ducktales Remastered), and the most recent being the Revival of Survival horror (Resident Evil 7). all of these things became prominate after Capcom put in the money and risk and proved to everyone else these were successful to try in the market

I agree, There are a lot of things I liked about Rise, but World/Iceborne was just... better on so many fundamental things. The maps of World FEEL alive and varied, where Rise went back more towards the big flat open area. Sure, Rise has a few regions where it's got some terrain, but there's nothing like the slope zone in the Ancient Forest, the multi-leveled cactus area in the desert or the Giant Crystal cave of the elders Recess. All the little creatures of World, they aren't just "You can throw this at the monster for benefits", there's little ants gathering from plants, tiny raptors jumping from trees, and yes, still useful guys like the Paratoad, but even then, you had to work with nature, drawing the monster to it, rather than just grabbing it and throwing it. The adjustable movesets from Rise are something I hope they keep, but the wirebugs were too much at times. Not only did they enable special moves, but they were great mobility tools, and even gave you wirefall to get out of monster combos. The plain old slinger gave you some of the mobility with Wedge Beetles, and some weapons could take advantage of slinger ammo/attacks, but it was never too much. The Clutch Claw was somewhat troublesome, I will admit, but overall not the worst thing.

Its worth noting that older games will feel bigger than those sales show because gaming in general has just constantly grown as space, more people buy them, more people are willing to give completely new things a shot and the games that would usually be lost to time, actually get a lot of publicity for free around the web. So older games will sell less on average just as a base.

I miss Mega Man too, the "X" series specifically. I use to be so good at those games, hell if I tried a little I could probably do speed runs on most of them...

Some things to point out capcom never combine sales for the same game but different versions "weird to me" RE5 is the most sold RE title! They even separate the gold edition from launch edition! 2ndly RE3R isn't an abomination nor cheap.. yes its short but it had so much quality and made characters much better.. it got 10s and 9s too not just 7 or 8s, ppl enjoyed it and thats why its selling insanely good! And capcom rn is in their golden age and they deserve it! I remember them saying after RE6 was released that they will focus so much on quality & being reviewed super well over sales and they absolutely nailed both now 😂🔥❤ everything seems to be 10 millions for them and whats insane is that their game keep selling longer after they were out! In 2 years RE4R will be like 13 or 14 millions and RE3R 10 millions or something 😂❤

RE5 still sold more than all other RE games. The fact they split it and gold edition always seemed odd for some reason.

I'm curioous. IIRC some early-mid 2000's Capcom games had DLC that could upgrade a base game to the Ultimate/Arcade Editition/whatever. Does that count as a sale or no?

World is the overall best-selling MH game. However, in Japan, it sold less than the two previous base games (4 and X). Iceborne sold less in Japan than P2G, P3, 3G, 4G, and XX.
@Benri058 ай бұрын
The absurd amount of sales made up for it, there was an interview for the lead director of Rise, basically it was meant to be an old style MH game with loadscreens and whatnot but since World got a massive reception they scrapped the early build for Rise and remade it based on the changes World had.

Selling millions of units over a long period is always great. Here's my question: how much does it cost to develop a game? Because if the budgets are ballooning, they have to keep selling units just to break even...
@douglasmesa6848 ай бұрын
Básicamente lo que cuesta hacer una película que necesita grandes efectos especiales, buenos actores, guionistas, etc. Si no me equivoco Red Dead Redemption 2 le costó a Rockstar como más de 500 millones de dólares.
@samhainvt8 ай бұрын
Development costs usually depend on the scale of the game itself, as well as factoring in development time, publicity, and other things. For AAA scale games they tend to balloon massively because of an obsession with studios trying to make movie quality cinematics. Capcom's budgets always seem to fluctuate, since back in the retro days they were notorious for reusing assets, then they outsourced a bunch of stuff later on with disastrous results. Now that they're back to having almost all development being internal, their own budgets per games are likely fluctuating again. I wouldn't be surprised if RE4 Remake had a super high budget compared to the remakes of 2 and 3 considering all the work that went into it.
@REvoLverj988 ай бұрын
Only 25% of all games from every company were ever profitable. The market is harsh, and really goes to show you Capcom's ingenuity to still exist like 30+ years later
@Potidaon8 ай бұрын
Capcom doesn't release budgets, but Breath of the Wild cost $40M to make. For comparison, a small game like Fuga: Memories of Steel cost $2M.

@@samhainvt This is why Mega man was important, 2d games usually don't need super hight budgets.

Hi I feel incredibly seen at 6:20 in the video--I was one of TWO testers who worked on the Xbox 360/PS3 port of MvC2. That game was ported by a company I can't remember the name of, which was owned by Cloud 9 which no longer exists (I myself am doing fine I got a new job about a year after that game released). I should say, I was one of two testers _in the development studio_ for that port (I'm sure Capcom corporate had plenty of testers working on it...maybe) but yeah. The reason that sales figure is as good as it is, is due to the Dreamcast version not being available nearly as easily as a DOWNLOAD on TWO platforms for a handful of moneys. Was it a good port? No. Was it technically clean? No, and I'm saying that even though it was my job to make it clean (two people are not enough to accurately QA a game of that magnitude, but that's what we had). Was it popular? At the time, certainly. People want their Mahvel, you know this.

I do hope Capcom goes a PS5 remaster/remake for the Onimusha series and Devil May Cry series. We also need a Legacy Collection for the Mega Man Legends series, Marvel vs Capcom series, and Capcom vs. SNK series.

It's easier for games now to have legs and keep selling over time. With digital distribution, and the possibility to order games online. back in the NES days, once the game wasn't on store shelves anymore, it was mostly done selling. and stores eventually had to stop selling some games to make room for the new releases.

A lot of people, my self included, were duped into thinking that RE3RE was a sure fire thing. RE2RE gave us no reason to think otherwise. Once we got our hands on it only then did people figure out that it wasn't all it was cracked up to be. As for sales months after the initial release, the game has been on heavy discount prices since then cuz the secret was out at that point, so even if you knew or heard that the game was not as good as the previous remake what's $30 or less for a "AAA" title?

we're in an era where the money men are pushing devs to make gaas, gacha, and micro transaction friendly games but we're starting to see signs of this type of scam being rejected by the average consumer. we can only hope that another scam doesn't become hot before these ones wither and die. then, hopefully, they'll have to only rely on the tried and true money maker of making good games.
